Descendants of Richard Fields Generation No. 1 1. RICHARD1 FIELDS was born Abt. 1730 in Amherst County, Virginia, and died Bef. 1764 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH MURRELL October 1757 in Amherst County, Virginia, daughter of THOMAS MURRELL and ELIZABETH OLIVER. Children of RICHARD FIELDS and ELIZABETH MURRELL are: i. THOMAS2 FIELDS, b. Bet. 1750 and 1755, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. Aft. 10 January 1807, Wilkes County, North Carolina; m. ELIZABETH COFFEY, Bef. 1773, Albemarle County, Virginia. Notes for THOMAS FIELDS: In 1799, Wilkes County, North Carolina, Thomas Fields was appointed, with others, to a committee formed to purchase public lands. On this land the Wilkes County courthouse, Wilkesboro, North Carolina was built. Thomas was active in the Yadkin Grove church, holding the office of clerk and later that of deacon. Thomas left a will dated 10 January 1807 and probated February term 1807 which named his wife Betty and children, William Fields, Jane Compton, Reuben Fields, Betsy Pendley, Winnifred Humphrey, Polly Humphrey, and Sally Pendley. Executors were wife Betty Fields, sons William Fields and Reuben Fields and trusty friend Eli Coffey. Witnesses were William Lenoir, Lewis Coffey, and Jonathan Boone. The trusty friend Eli Coffey was Betty's nephew. Witness Lewis Coffey was also a relative of Betty. Jonathan Boone was a brother of Daniel Boone. He and another brother, Jesse Boone were members of the Yadkin Grove Baptist Church, as were several members of the Fields and Coffey families. Daniel Boone himself had lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina but had already moved away, moving first into Kentucky and later to Missouri. More About THOMAS FIELDS: Will: 10 January 1807, Wilkes County, North Carolina Notes for ELIZABETH COFFEY: When John Coffey's will was appraised some nineteen years after his death, Elizabeth and her "lawfull husband Thom. Fields" were named in the report of the appraisers. ii. ELIZABETH FIELDS, b. 12 March 1755, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. 24 May 1824, Buncombe County, North Carolina; m. (1) BRADLEY BERRY, 29 December 1774, Albemarle County, Virginia; m. (2) RICE COFFEY, 1785. Notes for ELIZABETH FIELDS: Elizabeth Fields married Bradley Berry by whom she became mother to Franklin Berry about 1775. Bradley Berry died of Rheumatic Fever while in the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth moved with her son, Franklin to Wilkes County, North Carolina. Apparently while living there she had a relationship with Rice Coffey which produced two more offspring. Elizabeth gave these two children the name Coffey and her married name. William Coffey Berry was born about 1796 and Mary Coffey Berry was born in 1789. Elizabeth later moved with her children to Buncombe County, North Carolina. Rice Coffey married Sarah Bradford in 1790 and moved to Tennessee. iii. SARAH FIELDS, b. Abt. 1757, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. Bet. 1805 and 1845, Wilkes County, North Carolina; m. THOMAS COFFEY, Abt. 1778, Albemarle Co., VA. Notes for SARAH FIELDS: She was called Sally. iv. JOEL FIELDS, b. Abt. 1760; d. Abt. 1781.

I received this from [email protected] (Rae Lynn Denton). Please reply directly to that address if you have information. Randall Fields Hi, Randall, I have not had ANY luck working on tracing my gr.father, Charles Lester Fields b. Sept. 8, abt 1896 in Cincinatti, OH; his siblings were: Raymond Fields, who lived in Chicago for many years & had a daughter named Dorann Fields; Jim Fields, who we believe died as a child in Cincinatti; William Fields and Mary Fields. Charles Lester Fields m. Ethel Lee Flynn in OK, their children were Charles Lester, Jr., Evelyn Maxilene, Helen Charlotte (my mother) Catherine Joyce and Marion Elizabeth. If anyone has any info on this family, I'd really appreciate it. I have heard that my grandfather spoke German as a child, so I fear their name was changed earlier from something more European, that may be why I'm having such trouble finding anything on them. Thanks, Janene McGaha Williams
This is just a period reminder of how this list works. No changes since last time. Please be sure to put key information in your subject line. (See below for details.) Randall Fields [email protected] ================== MAILING LIST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND RULES PURPOSE OF THIS LIST: This list is a method of communication among and between people world-wide who are researching the genealogy, heritage, and culture of persons with the surname. Messages posted to this list should pertain to the surname and persons, living and deceased, possessing the surname. There is no charge for subscribing to this list. However, the sponsors of this list (RootsWeb) welcome donations of any size. At the present time, the list is open to anyone who wishes to subscribe. SPONSORS OF THE LIST: The list is sponsored by the good folks at RootsWeb . The list is open to all people interested in the surname. WHO TO CONTACT: If you experience trouble using this list or have a concern about the administration of this list or have a concern about posting to this list, please contact the Listowner, Randall Fields at [email protected] FORM OF THIS LIST: This is a email distribution list. All email sent to a single email address are automatically re-distributed to hundreds of subscribers world wide. There are two versions of distribution available: Standard (or list) and Digest. Standard (list) re-distributes each message as it is received; Digest collects several messages and re-distributes them as a single email, typically once a day. (See below for information on subscribing and unsubscribing.) SENDING MESSAGES TO THE LIST: To send a message to the list, simply address it to: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] depending on which list you are on. This will distribute the message to everyone subscribed either in list mode or digest mode. However, there are certain rules to follow when sending your message. Using this format will help ensure your message is read by an interested recipient and lessen the likelihood that the message will be discarded, unread, as junk email. The Subject line of your message should follow this format: 1. The surname should be the first word in subject line and should be in all capital letters. This should be followed by a first name (if appropriate) locale abbreviation, a direction of migration, another locale abbreviation, and the approximate dates. For instance, George Surname moving from Scotland to New Brunswick, Canada, to Kentucky around 1820 to 1840 would look like: SURNAME, George SCT>NB CAN>KY abt. 1820-1840 If you don't know the complete name, migration route, or dates, it is permissible to leave them out of the subject line and put an explanation in the message body. However, the more complete the subject line, the more likely someone with a similar interest will read your email. 2. Keep you message to the point. A short message is more likely to be read than a lengthy one. Be sure to include all known vital statistics and indicate if they are certain -from primary documents like church records and birth certificates - or less accurate sources like census records. Include names of spouse(s), children, locale, etc. All the clues that might give the recipient an idea of whether there might be a connect. But don't forget that a short message can always be followed up with a longer, more detailed message if there is the likelihood of a connection and short messages are more likely to be read! Some email servers limit the size of messages, so keep your message to about a typewritten page or two at the very most. (This message violates this rule. Oops!) 3. Always include your name and how to reach you in the body of your message. Sometimes email headers get messed up and your return email address isn't obvious. SENDING MESSAGES: Please DO NOT send your message to more than one list or individual recipient UNLESS there is a CLEAR connection that legitimatizes such distribution. For example, a message concerning a family named FIELDS with daughters marrying into CROW and SAMPLES families should be written to be relevant to each list and not a single message distributed to several lists. Please use good judgement. Sending the same message to multiple, unwilling recipients is considered "spamming" and is in poor taste. Remember, too, that if you address your message to CROW-L and cc: to all your relations, the whole world-wide mailing list now has Aunt Mary's email address and who knows what they will do with it. Also, when someone hits the "Reply" button to your message, it may default to sending the reply to everyone you sent your message to. Aunt Mary will start receiving some email she didn't want and will cut you out of her Will! Most email software has a way to send a blind copy to a recipient so anyone else the message was sent to has no knowledge of who the original message was addressed to and the "Reply" button can't send a message to everyone who got the original message. (AOL subscribers can put parenthesis around an outbound email address to make it a "blind" address.) MESSAGE CONTENT: This list is intended for free exchange of information. Anything that is not relevant to the surname, heritage of persons possessing the surname, or history and culture surrounding persons possessing the surname is not appropriate to this list. Examples of messages not appropriate to this list are: jokes, recipes, announcement of events (not related to the surname), warnings about viruses, warnings about Internet legislation, etc., anything off-colour or lewd, personal attacks, racist or ethnic slurs, political statements (not historical references relevant to heritage, culture, history, etc.), and commercial advertisements. PLEASE, no email with attached files sent to the list. These will be rejected automatically by the Rootsweb server. PLEASE, send your messages in plain text. No HTML code or "enhanced text", please. (Most people only get a long email of gibberish when you send HTML- enhanced code.) Messages with enhanced text may be rejected by the Rootsweb server. RECEIVING MESSAGES: Due to Internet traffic or routine RootWeb maintenance, it may take several hours for your email message to be distributed. However, it rarely takes more than a few minutes and it is extremely rare for a properly formated email message to the list to get lost. If your message does not appear to have been re-distributed, please wait several hours or a day before re-sending it. REPLYING TO MESSAGES: Please do not reply to the list address unless the reply in some way clarifies or amplifies the original sender's message and would be of general interest to the MAJORITY of subscribers of the list. Please RESPOND DIRECTLY to the original sender's email address directly in all other cases. (One exception: If you have made a connection with another subscriber's family research, we'd probably like to know of your success!) LOCATING A PAST EMAIL MESSAGE: The email archiving/search mechanism has recently been unveiled and is constantly being enhanced and improved. If you want to give it a whirl, take a look at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl It does assume you know the name of the list you want to search. But it's not too fussy about how you type it: Use UPPERCASE or lowercase as you like. You can even mix the two. DISCIPLINARY ACTION/REMOVAL FROM THE LIST: With the intent of maintaining harmony and focus to the list, sponsors of the list reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. The intent of the list is for free and open discourse. However, if improper conduct is detected and the culprit refuses to cease and desist, that person may be removed from the list's distribution and prevented from posting further messages to the list. This is extreme action and will not be used except with extreme provocation. SUBSCRIBING TO THE LIST: If you'd like to subscribe or unsubscribe to this mailing list, simply send an email message to the list with the message SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE - depending on your intent - and nothing else (no signature). Anything on the subject line will do. For the CROW list use [email protected] For the FIELDS list use [email protected] For the SAMPLES list use [email protected] f you'd like to subscribe or unsubscribe to this mailing listin digest mode, simply send an email message to the list with the message SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE - depending on your intent - and nothing else (no signature). Anything on the subject line will do. For the CROW list use [email protected] For the FIELDS list use [email protected] For the SAMPLES list use [email protected] Allow at least a day for the subscribe or unsubscribe request to take effect. There are often several messages in the pipeline before yours. If you have any difficulty subscribing/unsubscribing or sending messages to the list, please feel free to contact the Listowner for assistance at [email protected]
Hello...I was advised today by the editor of our JACKS NEWSLETTER of fraudulent genealogies compiled by GUSTAVE ANJOU. Please consult the following URL: http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/fraud/fraud/1.htm This was sent to me a while back. I cut out most of the e-mail because it was so long. You might want to visit this web site since it tells about some fraudulent genealogies. It emphasizes the fact that there are three things to do in genealogy. 1) document 2) document 3) document In other words, document everything. List Manager Randall Fields

We all need to consider the following and do what we think is best. I got this from another list I am on. List Manager Randall Fields My friends - I generally do not bring you news about RootsWeb, whose servers house some 4000 mail lists, including this one, because I know you all get the RootsWeb Review about once a week, which pretty well covers what is going on within RootsWeb. However, on one of the lists which we list hosts use to discuss list problems and other items of mutual interest, a discussion was started by a few people concerning the tiny salaries paid to a few people who give practically all of their time to the RootsWeb Cooperative(they were complaining - if you can believe it - about them getting paid at all). As most of you know, RootsWeb was created by, and is "owned" by Dr. Brian Leverich and his wife Karen Isaacson, both superb computer people and genealogists. They created RootsWeb and they have funded 90% of it out of their own pockets since its creation. This means that they have a houseful of computer equipment, as well as other equipment in a hub elsewhere, that runs all of these lists, as well as web pages and other items for the USGenWeb - the effort is huge and growing by leaps and bounds. However, their corporate sponsor, Palladium, has disappeared into a merger with another company, and that funding has evaporated. It seems unclear whether any other corporation will step forward to help underwrite these huge costs. In the message which Brian sent to the listowner list, he makes the first mention of danger to the whole RootsWeb concept. He is rarely pessimistic, and if he is concerned, then we all need to be concerned. He finds it particularly depressing that only a small percentage (2%-6%) are helping to support RootsWeb in any way, even though there are literally hundreds of thousands of people regularly using the mail lists and the other web pages and items which RootsWeb hosts. You can see that he has taken out a $25,000 loan just to try to keep the equipment growing with the needs of RootsWeb. The bottom line is that if we, as users of these RootsWeb services, cannot help with a few dollars(and it does not have to be much at all, if we all get involved)in support of this fine group, we are in very real danger of losing these mail lists and literally hundreds of web pages of genealogical material(including the JP Images Page and many, many others)that is today available. Please give this some thought, and see if you can find a few dollars that you could donate to RootsWeb to keep this effort alive. I have long said that Brian and Karen cannot forever continue to incure financial hits in the range of ten of thousands of dollars at a time, and still be able to keep RootsWeb alive. Take a look at: www.rootsweb.com and you can see how to donate if you wish to do so. I urge you to consider it. It is a great investment. Brian's message follows. Let's see if we can make it a merrier Christmas for Karen and him. My apologies for the lengthy message, but I think it needed to be said. -B ============================================================ Karen and I are in the hole on RootsWeb; not only have we not been paid anything, we've been paying out of our pockets for the privilege of working here night and day without weekends or holidays. (Just *today* Karen and I took out a $25,000 loan to cover the fact that the Palladium sponsorship has apparently died with their acquisition by TLC, and to pay for the hardware we're going to need to handle the new users we expect to have after Christmas.) Just so you fully understand what I've told you above, you should be aware that in terms of traffic RootsWeb is one of the *top 25* or so sites on the whole Internet. Folks who can run these sorts of facilities are absurdly rare (there are a few hundred of them in the whole world), and senior system administrators at the other "Top 25" sites generally have salary+benefits+option packages that run in the $200,000-500,000 per year and up range. ### Folks should be clear on the concept that the administration staff at RootsWeb is making a huge contribution to the genealogical community by essentially donating our time. The fact that each of us is personally donating services worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars a year is part of the reason we find it so depressing that only about 2-6% of our users are choosing to support RootsWeb at all, and that even among our supporters the average contribution is only one-third of what "tens of thousands of genealogists" (the Wall Street Journal) are spending at Ancestry.com. I don't think RootsWeb is going to fold anytime soon. But I'd be lying to you if I didn't tell you that the staff is seriously wondering whether the community values our efforts enough that continuing on with RootsWeb makes sense. The admin staff wants to give the genealogical community a great online genealogical library, but we can't do it if only 2-6% of our users will voluntarily choose to support us. Without more support, RootsWeb can't afford to buy the servers and bandwidth and scanners and such that we need to bring online the whole US Census and the British Birth/Marriage/Death records and all the other resources we'd like to make freely available to the entire community. Maybe Ancestry has it right. Lock up the resources and charge the users through the nose. Oh well. -B

Can anyone tell me where I might locate the book: "Daniel Field of Kittery [Maine] and Some of His Descendants" by Kenneth A. Field (1989)? I'm interested in the Field family of Prospect, Swanville, and Searsport Maine. Daniel Field b. abt 1798 was my gggg-father. He was the son of James Field (Capt.?) and grandson of Daniel Field of Kittery. (I think). Anyone interested in sharing info regarding the above? Thanks and Happy Holidays. I received this from Rootsweb. Just so you will know, Rootsweb has had to close the lists to non-subscribers because of the amount of SPAM that was coming in. I had thought about closing the lists prior to this but now I don't have to. If you have more than one e-mail address and you wish to post messages from more than one you will have to subscribe with each address. You cannot subscribe from one address and post from another because the equipment at rootsweb will not recognize you as a subscriber. List Manager Randall Fields Hi, listowners -- This announcement is to let you know that we've just finished "closing" all of the RootsWeb lists. This means that the list server will only let you post to a mailing list if you subscribe to it. I'm sorry that this had to be done so hastily, but we didn't really have any choice. The volume of spam that was being sent through our lists had reached a phenomenal level, and I was spending most of my time on that problem rather than improving the systems. Worse, some users had begun to send spam complaints to sites that were completely unrelated to RootsWeb, but could kill our network connection if they received too many complaints. Closing the lists to subscribers became a matter of self-preservation. However, in order to make it easier on you, we've changed things to make it a little more obvious when someone who isn't a subscriber posts to your list. The list server will add the words "{not a subscriber}" to the Subject heading of their message, like this: Subject: {not a subscriber} Ancestors of John BROWN? When this happens, you can use the "bounce" or "redirect" features of your e-mail program (if such things are available) to repost this message to your list, and it should be approved for everyone to see. Or you can write to the poster and invite them to subscribe. Important to remember: some folks will subscribe to a mailing list with one e-mail address, and then try to post with another e-mail address. They don't mean any harm by this. If you notice that someone keeps trying to post to the list from an address that isn't subscribed, and you *want* his posts to be approved, you can add his address to the "accept list." To do this, follow the "Customize Settings" link from the bottom of your listowner utility page, and then choose the option to "Edit the Accept File." If you have any other questions about managing a closed list, please feel free to subscribe to NEWBIE-LISTOWNER-L and ask away -- one of our more seasoned listowners will be glad to answer your questions. -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades
I received this on another list I am on. I agree with this person. If this happens it will be a simple matter to remove the offending person from the list and banish them permanently. Recently, on other RootsWeb surname mailing lists, two incidences of inappropriate activities have occurred. A lurker on one or more surname list was posing as a surname researcher and was personally contacting list members who had posted queries on the surname discussion list. This individual would not share information and became rather intimidating to those list members refusing to share their data. Consequently, many of the list members became afraid to post further queries or data to the list for fear of reprisal from this individual. After considerable investigation, it appeared that this individual was writing a book on the surname(s) and used rude tactics to achieve their goal. Another incident involved an individual who has badgered surname list members to purchase their books after members posted a query on the surname list. Both of these activities, whether intimidating or badgering list members on or off the list, will not be tolerated and will result in the perpetuator being permanently removed from the list. If the perpetuator's activity warrants, they will be reported to their Internet Service Provider recommending their account be terminated. If anyone experiences any actions considered inappropriate relative to this list, please notify me immediately using my personal email address: [email protected] Any report of inappropriate activity will kept in strict confidence.
