Elizabeth was born in KY, not sure about Wm. Mary Ann also born in KY. We do not know who these Fields are. Can anyone help? The rest of Mary Ann's Fields family was also in that area of MO

    2. Think maybe we have visited before. My Ambrose Fields b 1792 Rockinham Co NC. Married Ann Nower in Mason Co KY, then lived in Hickman Co KY where most of their 9 children were born. There was another Ambrose Fields b 1823 in Hickman Co, a nephew to the older Ambrose. the older Ambrose's grandfather was Nathaniel Fields. He lived in Hanover Co VA until abt 1765 when he went to NC. Do not know Nathaniel's parents or any siblings. Book i have says Ambrose is a Fields family name, but doesn't show any other Ambroses.

    2. Dear Betty, I appreciate your giving the names of the books. Col. John Field is my ancestor--lots of confusion from there back. The "Pierce" volumes are a great resource but there are errors. For one, he said that John Field married Anna Clark, the sister of George Rogers Clark and this cannot be correct. 1. [FIELDS-L] Fraudulent Genealogies
    2. I received this from Lori Samples. It has a lot of good information about fraudulent genealogies. It shows why the warning to all genealogists is document, document, document. I have one line that hasn't gone anywhere because I have been unable to document anything. I have a few lines that are documented by secondary sources and I can not locate any primary sources. Randall Fields From: First Families[SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, January 25, 1999 3:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: ANJOU Forgeries Hello Everyone I have been asked to reply to some questions concerning our previous postings about the Gustave ANJOU forgeries and possibly clear up some confusion. First let us all understand something about Gustave ANJOU (1863-1942) born in Sweden ,and after serving a prison term there for forgery .he came to this country in 1890. ANJOU turned out many "genealogies" for those who could pay his fee of $9,000 and up His report took aprox. 3 weeks and included a coat of arms, surname history etc There is no great money in producing a printed genealogy and ANJOU found an easier way to become very wealthy. The reports were in manuscript form and were ment for his client. There was never any thought at this time of our history that everything in the "genealogy" could be verified and since the more he produced, the more his fees while each completed "genealogy" would lead to additional clients through the false lines. In later life ,when the Genealogy Bubble burst, he produced many lines and sold them by mail at reduced prices, So there are many out there especially those of the English common names and it appears as if he found the German and Dutch lines were difficult for outsiders to trace so he excelled with them. All of the 'genealogies" were written around existing records that were gathered from the client and through obvious sources that could be proved. However, ANJOU then placed wills, births, deaths etc. that were his inventions, into various lines and then continued up another line that had many proven sources. A client was so overwhelmed with data that the false entries were accepted without question for the most part. It wasn't until later years that it was determined that ALL of Anjou's works were fraudulent and each and every entry must be searched and proven by original sources. At times he would tie lines throughout Europe by creating his own parishes and then using that as a source for wills, births, deaths etc., all false. He would also list non existing church records he "found" in established true parishes. Now we can trace those records. At the time they were introduced it was most difficult. If you have lines that are listed on our web site the first thing you will want to do is have someone copy the manuscript at it's location to make it available for research. Then determine the line. You will never determine a false entry just from lookin at it and each entry must be researched. Many original manuscripts have found their way into public hands and information contained within them have been passed on through the years by trusting writers. Be very careful of all entries that bring a collateral line into a genealogy. You will not find the normal factor of a lot of missing maiden names with ANJOU , he made sure they all had maiden names connecting to lines that had many proven sources. Male births will appear with sources to parents (starting another line) who never had children or who had proven children but his birth was never found. I urge you all to read the data we have on our web site at; http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ We direct you to sources for additional reading through the "Genealogical Journal" published by the Utah Genealogical Association. Their internet address is; http://www.infouga.org/ The Genealogical Journal Volume 19 Numbers 1 and 2 of 1991 contains six articles on various genealogy frauds including two fine ones on Gustave Anjou. I hope this helps and makes you aware that there is much information out there. Some of it created by frauds. We will cover some of these people from time to time. When ever you receive a piece of information, ask yourself "Where did this come from?". Make it a point to source everything back to its original source. If an item is not sourced, you have nothing but a PROBABLE and you must not follow further until you can prove it. It is sad to say but we all have spent much time researching lines that are not ours. Also another point. NO FAMILY HISTORY IS A SOURCE. Only the primary sourced information within the History may be considered as reliable. If any of you come across anything written by an ANJOU, please call it to our attention so we may inform those whose lines it touches and they in turn can trace down the problem entries. The best to you all and happy hunting. Harold Oliver Director America's First Families

    3. Does anyone on the FIELDS List have information on a Thomas Fields, the son of Henry, Sr., of Culpeper Co., VA? Name of his wife? Children? When/where did Thomas Fields die? In Mason Co., KY, deeds I found that Thomas Field, of Washington, Mason Co., apptd John Field of Madison Co., VA, his attorney to convey lands in Harrison Co., VA he had inherited from Henry Fields of Culpeper Co., VA. Exr: Daniel Field of VA and Henry Field of Woodford Co., KY. >From the above, it appears that Thomas Field was still alive in 1798 and living in Mason Co., KY. Is he the same Thomas Fields who appears on Bourbon Co.KY tax lists 1797, 1799, and 1800 as living on the "northside of the road". Is he the same Thomas Fields who was bondsman for the 1799 marriages of Sarah Fields to Dennis Murphy and Hannah Fields to James Taylor (Bourbon Co., KY)? In Aug 1827, in Bourbon Co. KY (Deed Book A) the estate of Henry Fields, Sr., of Culpeper Co. VA, was still being divided among his heirs. By this time, many of his children were deceased and a few grandchildren were named in this document. Among his heirs named in 1827 was "unknown heirs of Thomas Fields, deceased, who are also heirs of Henry Field, Sr." Thus, it appears that the Thomas Fields in Mason Co KY in 1798 was dead by 1827 and his heirs were not known by the rest of the surviving heirs of Henry Field Sr. What happened to Thomas Fields after 1798? Why were his children unknown by the family? Any help in naming Thomas Fields' children would be appreciated. -- Helen Graves

    1. [FIELDS-L] Carey/Cary and Field Mayflower Lineage
    2. Hi Folks - My Mayflower lineage back to Richard Warren is verifiable with primary and secondary sources but has one "weak link" between generations six (6) and seven (7). I hope to strengthen this connect to fully satisfy SMD membership standards and requirements. The basic locale for these generations is Rhode Island. There are no problems in generations seven to the present, nor generations six to the past. The generation six and seven link has been accepted for past society membership but should have better verification for present membership. Generation Six (6) Abigail Carey/Cary (1736-1820), daughter of Hannah Church and Allen Carey/Cary married John Field (1738-1808), son of John Field and Elizabeth Snow. Generation Seven (7) Their son, John Field married Hannah Gladding. This John Field was born in North Providence on 17 December 1761 and "died at sea" circa 1800s, with his estate being administered 26 Mar 1804. He married Hannah Gladding (1765-1848) of Newport in Providence on 03 Nov 1785. John Field and Hannah Gladding (Field) were parents of John Albert Field born in Providence 01 Jan 1793. After John Field's "at sea" death Hannah Gladding Field married James Burr, a widower with a daughter, Deborah Ann Burr born in Providence on 02 October 1795. Deborah Ann Burr and John Albert Field married with a result that Hannah Gladding Field Burr and James Burr were both step and in-law parents to their child's spouse. This is just an "interesting aside." What I'm seeking is better link verification of John Field (generation 7) as son of John Field and Abigail Carey/Cary (generation 6). Presently my verification is limited to a 1901 published Field Genealogy and I (and the Society) would like more. If any of you can help I'd be most appreciative to hear from you. Best to you all, John Tallman Lookout Mountain, Tennessee Rootsweb Donor
