    2. Recently I have see several "virus warnings" appearing on several lists that I am on. Please do not send any "virus warnings" to the mailing lists. I have seen these same virus warnings in my e-mail several times before from private individuals. Now they have shown up on two different lists I subscribe to. These so-called warnings are usually hoaxes and just waste space on the archives. Remember that every message sent to the mailing list is archived. Also, there have been several occurences of people sending information to the list and quoting extensively from another message. Some people have been known to quote an entire digest containing several messages. If you need to quote something from another message please keep the quote brief and quote only what is necessary. There is never any reason to quote the taglines or the headers, but this I have seen done on some lists. The final item is the subject. When sending items to the list try to put information in the subject line that has to do with the information in the list. I just received an e-mail from another list with the subject "my family tree." That really is not very informative. It is best to put a name, a date or range of dates, and a place or places, if known. This gives list members an idea of what is in the e-mail and may be just the information they are looking for. This list has done much better then some other lists that i am subscribed to but I thought I would send this out as a reminder. List Manager Randall Fields

Elaine Hasleton, a public affairs representative from the Family History Center in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, said the Web site is in its developmental stages. The project is underway, however Hasleton said no set completion date has been given. The ancestral files of the LDS Church will most likely be accessible from the site, said Craig Foster, a spokesman for the family history center's public affairs projects. Foster said the details of what other files and information will be accessible from the site is not final. "We are all excited about the future for family history," said Jana Darrington, 21, a senior from Mesa, Ariz., majoring in family history. "Making a Web site for family history seems like a logical thing for the L= DS Church to do ... It would be a dream to be able to work out of my home. I can work for as long as I want, whenever I want." -- Lynda Cameron, Provo, regular HBLL Family History Center patron As the department assistant for the Harold B. Lee Library's family history department, Darrington said many people have asked about the possibility o= f family history files going online. "This will make things much more available for the patrons and make genealogy work widely known," she said. Darrington expects the number of people going to family history centers to naturally decline once the files become available from home. "But I'm sure the elderly who don't feel comfortable using the Internet wi= ll still make use of the facilities," Darrington said. Lynda Cameron of Provo visits the HBLL Family History Center at least once= a week, sometimes more. "Making a Web site for family history seems like a logical thing for the L= DS Church to do," Cameron said. Cameron is originally from Australia, where her father, Keith Williams, still resides. She said they are both working on genealogy for their famil= y continents apart. "This will really open information up for my father and make things more available for everyone," Cameron said. "It would be a dream to be able to work out of my home. I can work for as long as I want, whenever I want." Darrington also mentioned that this new project with family history will introduce many non-members to the LDS Church. "There are many people who work on family history that are not Mormon," sh= e said. Many of them already use LDS family history departments, and with the futu= re Web site many more will become familiar with the LDS Church, Darrington said. 1. [FIELDS-L] More Fields Info
    2. Jim Welsh
    3. Hi Fields relatives, I was in the Oklahoma Historical Library yesterday doing some research for a column I write and looking up some of my surnames in Tennessee. I ran across something accidentally that sheds a bit more light on our Chief Richard Fields. This material was in a book: RHEA COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEED BOOKS A,B,C,D,E, Abstracted By, David Gray and Bettye J. Broyles. Published by The Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society, Dayton, Tennessee, 1987. This is condensed into most interesting information: "This land extended to the Indian Boundary line and, in fact, a few acres were south of that line. The land begins at the old mouth of McGill Creek on Sale Creek, down Sale Creek and passing mouth of Russell Branch, now known as Hutcheson Branch.... On the tract is located McDonald Cemetery, built around a small Indian Mound and surrounded by an old Indian Village. Capt. Richard Fields, a half-breed [he was less than half] Cherokee, lived in 1808 just south of the Russell estate in a large two-story frame house, with peach and apple orchards...and many cleared and tilled fields. He had served as an interpreter for the government in its negotiations with the Cherokees. When the commission issued to run the east-west line in 1805 to mark the boundary between the whites and the Cherokees, specific instructions were provided that in case that line should interfere with the Improvements of Richard Fields, that said line would be altered to avoid such interference. A short time later Capt. Fields migrated to the Texas Terrotory, where he obtained large grants of land from the Mexican government. He was murdered by his own tribe in 1827. The area from the Russell Farm to Mouth of Sale Creek was known as Fields Settlement. Richard Fields in 1803 was instrumental in persuading Dr. Gideon Blackburn to locate one of his early missionary schools within the Fields Settlement." ### Comments: This shows that Chief/Capt. Richard was in Rhea Co., TN, as early as 1803. I lost a copy of an article out of the Chronicles of Oklahoma, put out by the OK Historical Society, around 1938, about Chief Richard serving in the Revolutionary war. Unfortunately, we lost several things in a move and that was one. I have been trying to find a copy of that article ever since. He served as a liason between the Indians and the Colonial troops. According to a story handed down in my family, the Chief actually got land for the tribe in grants from the Spanish. However, these grants were located in his home and the house was set on fire by someone. This occurred shortly before there was an uprising by whites in the area which became the Fredonian Rebellion. Chief Richard tried to get the copies of the grants replaced but couldn't. That is when he and others joined with the white settlers in the Fredonian Rebellion. He was determined to obtain a permanent settlement for the Cherokees and other Indians. One of the "heroes?" of the Texas War for Independence wrote to Chief Bowles (the tribe in Texas has 3 chiefs) and told him to stop Fields anyway he could. He did, he ordered him assassinated. Then this same individual enlisted the help of Bowles and the other Cherokees to help fight the Spanish just a year or two later. The Cherokees did help, and for their trouble, they were later run out of Texas. Chief/Capt. Richard was well known to whites and well respected for his diplomatic ability. This is documented in articles. There are two places where there is a great deal of material about Chief Richard, but you do have to hunt, and that is the Oklahoma Historical Society Library and the Archives at the University of Texas. Hope this provides a little more information for those of you who are descendants. Dorothy Welsh

In Witness hereof that I do freely give the above mentioned negroes with their future Increases & the Land aforesaid to the Intent above mentioned without any manner of Condition, I have hereunto set my Name & seal this the 12th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety. Singed, sealed & Deliver In the presence of H. Field (LS) William Stanton Henry Field, Jun'r Benjamin Field At a Court held for Culpeper County the 18th day of October 1790 This Deed of Gift from Henry Field to Dianna Stanton & Stanton Slaughter was proved by the oaths of the witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded. This Diana Stanton had a Son William who married Lucy Blackwell, and a daughter Sarah Stanton who married Col Robert Slaughter.... (Stanton Slaughters parents) Ive also seen that Diana Stanton died : Diana (Field) Stanton Died Dec 16, 1811 Culpeper Co Va...In her will she names her son William and his children .Ive never Seen Diana Stanton or Henry Field Sr on the 1790 or 1800 census or 1810 For that matters....But to make a long story Short... William Stanton son of William and Diana Field Stanton, I found William Stanton to a Feby Powell ... Dec 25th 1794 in Madison Co Va. Madison Co Va was created from Culpeper Co Va in 1793. Ive not viewed 1790,1800,1810 Census of Madison Co For Fields or Stantons But I did run across this ....A will for a Henry Field Dated Jan 23 1800 Madison Co Va. Now is it possible that Henry Field Sr died in Madison 10 yrs after deeding his land in 1790? Is it possible 3 years later when Henry Field Sr deed that property to his children in Culpeper Co that the same property was now in 1793 in Madison Co Va when the new County was created? I have not seen this will but who is the Henry Field in Madison Co, where the grandson of Diana Field Stanton married? Anyone working on Henry Field Sr have any thoughts on this idea? KY. My Ambrose Field, B. 1795 in either VA or KY, married Elizabeth Reeder, daughter of Thomas A. Reeder in Bracken Co. KY September 8, 1820 in Bracken Co. Ky. In the 1820 census Ambrose is listed as living in the same household as William Field. Prior to the marriage of Ambrose and Elizabeth, William (a constable in Bracken Co. at the time) was made guarding of Elizabeth and her brother Samuel. At the time on the 1820 census there were 2 Ambrose Field's 1 in Mason Co. and the other in Bracken Co. My Ambrose was still listed on the tax rolls of Bracken Co. in 1830, shortly thereafter the family moved to Edgar Co. Illinois. Ambrose and Elizabeth were both buried in Effingham Co. Illinois. The names of their 12 children were Lewis J, Margaret, Henry Robert, Frances, Elizabeth, Samuel Miller, Nancy, William, Nelson, Thomas D, John W, and Wilford. These are some of the same names given to the Ambrose who married Ann Nower and then moved to OR. I would like to know the proof that Robert Nelson Field was the father to Ambrose who married Ann and that he wasn't the father of Ambrose who married Elizabeth. Searching for Ambrose Field who married Elizabeth has hit a dead end street. Thanks for any help

    3. I was in the library at Tahlequah recently and one of the women who was working there explained how Emmett Starr knew so much about the Cherokees. He was part Cherokee and knew some of the original families very well. Many of these people were still alive in the early 1900s. Starr's book was written in 1926. As I recall, he was born prior to 1884 (but don't hold me to that date). I too am descended from Chief Richard and Jennie Buffington, so I have done some research. I do know that there were mistakes on the original applications for the Dawes Rolls. I caught one on my grandmothers, but it was minor; however, all her siblings made the same mistake. I don't know who is right or who is wrong, and I surely don't want to take sides--this is just meant as information. There is another source: Genealogy of "Old & New Cherokee Indian Families", by George Morison Bell, Sr. The book was published in 1972, by the Leonard Printing Company, Bartlesville, OK. The Library of Congress Catalog Card Number is: 78-189676. I can throw out another wrinkle. All of us descended from Chief Richard have been told that there were no children by ______Grapp. However, I copied information out of a book in Texas that said the Chief left 7 (think that is the number as I don't have that folder handy) minor children when he died in Texas. Someone had to be the mother. Your cousin, Dorothy D. Welsh

    3. Emmet Starr, in his History of the Cherokee Indians, writes that Chief Richard Fields was married to four women, the first being Jennie Buffington and the second being Elizabeth Hicks. From Fields' marriage with Jennie Buffington, according to Starr, five children were born: George, Nannie, Elizabeth, John and Ezekial. From Field's marriage to Elizabeth Hicks, Starr lists three children: Moses (my ancestor), Dempsey and Henry. One of Moses Fields' daughters, Sarah P. (Fields) Smith always maintained that her grandmother (Moses' mother) was Jennie Buffington, and not Elizabeth Hicks. And this was not just information passed down to her from elders--she REMEMBERED her grandmother being in their home when she, Sarah, was a child, and her grandmother was Jennie Buffington. One can try to reconcile the conflicting stories, reasoning that Jennie Buffington could well have visited the Moses Fields family and been called "Grandmother Fields" or some similar appellation by the Fields children, as she certainly was the former wife of their grandfather, Richard Fields, even if she was not really Moses' mother. But I have recently read through the Miller application of Martha E. (Fields) Horsley, another of Moses Fields' children, and Sarah's older sister. Martha swears that her paternal grandmother was Jennie. Martha was admitted to the Guion Miller Roll on the strength of this testimony, and many other applicants subsequently were admitted who based their claim on Martha's line. Is there anyone on the list who has any source other than Emmet Starr for the proposition that Elizabeth Hicks is Moses Fields' mother? And does anyone know what Starr's source was? I think that Moses was the last of the children born to Richard and Jennie Fields, and was not the first of the children born to Richard and Elizabeth Fields, as Starr says. From a degree-of-blood standpoint, it is of no consequence, as Jennie and Elizabeth were each 1/2 Cherokee. And both the Buffington and Hicks families have played prominent roles in the history of the Cherokee Nation. But I would like to clear this up so I can research the right ancestors. :) Jim G
