    3. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to send this. I believe this is my line, but cautiously so. What I have is scant, but yes, I do have the fourth child's name. Let's see if I can organize this so it makes sense. John Fields, b. c.1781 m. Elizabeth ___, b. c. 1790, SC (may have een the daughter of Champ Taylor, listed in 1820 census, Pendleton Co., SC Issue: Malinda Ann Fields, b. c.1825, d. 29 Dec. 1898 m (1) ___ Stevens m (2) 30 Dec 1852 Martin P. McEachern, d. 1859 m (3) Isaac Stone Champion Taylor Field (my line; more info if you want it) Adeline E. Fields Issiah M. Fields I know that Champ, Adeline, and Issia were all born in South Carolina, Champ in Pickins County. (At least, I think I know that. You know how that goes.) Champ is probably the one who dropped the S on Fields, but throughout his life, he was adamant about it, as are his descendants. Malinda Fields and Martin McEachern (son of Capt. Archibald McEachern and Aley Ann Post had three children: Aley Ann (f), b. 1853, d. 21 Sep 1881 Mattie Eolin (f), b. 1856 Johnny M., b. 1858, m. Sissy Hays One of the girls (possibly both?) m. Henry Clay Williams. I show that he married Aley Ann, she died, and he married Mattie. (?) This info came years ago from a Varney Graves, who also sent me a photocopy of a picture showing Mattie standing with five other people, two of whom might be her parents. Photo was taken near Texarkana, Ark., about 1880 or 1882. Graves used to write a column called "On the Square: Vignettes of History" for the Fayette County (GA) News. His April 18, 1979 column dealt with the McEachern legacy. You can obtain a copy from Editor, Fayette County News, Box 96, Fayetteville, GA. Or I will be happy to copy mine and send it to you. Fayetteville is a quaint little town, but I spent a month there one day doing this research! Twenty years ago, air conditioning still had not made it to their public buildings! Haven't been back since. If this is right, Aley Ann and Henry Clay Williams had three children: James Henry Williams m. Maggie Hemperly Sterling Williams m. Lucy Nash/Nass Pearl, b. 10 Sep 1881, d. 27 Sep 1881, six days after her mother Then Mattie and Williams had two children: Zachary Martin Williams m. Leila Glore (had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Williams) Roger Bruce Williams m. Eva Merchant Johnny McEachern and Sissy Hays had two children, Wiley McEachern and Winnie McEachern who m. ___ Taylor. In Feb., 1980, Winnie Taylor lived at Rt. 6, Box 597E, Texarkana, TX 75501. She refused to answer a geneology query and asked me not to write again. I've got to stop this nonsense and get ready for work, but if this is your family, let me know. I have numerous other letters and documents I can copy for you as well.

    1. [FIELDS-L] Re: William T. "Bill" Fields
    2. In the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Monday, February 15,1999 was an article: LDDS founder BILL FIELDS dies at 52 The article came from Tupelo, MS Financial consultant William T. "Bill" Fields, founder of the telecommunications company that evolved into industry giant MCI-WorldCom, died after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. Fields, a Tupelo native, died Saturday (the 12th). He was 52. A longtime financial consultant and former partner in IFM Insurance of Tupelo, Fields was best known for his role in founding Long Distance Discount Service, or LDDS, in June 1984. Fields was one of nine original investors in the company that took advantage of AT&T's divestive of its Bell companies in the early 1980's. Originally formed as a telephone equipment company, LDDS soon grew into a long-distance company. Fields was named the company's fisrt chief executive officer and was chairman of the board. After less than a year at the helm, Fields turned over the company's operations to a hand-picked successor, Bernie Ebbers. The company has since become MCI-WorldCom, which is second only to AT&T as the world's largest telecommunications company. Fields stayed active as a board member for LDDS until his retirement in 1992 and was instrumental in financing the aggressive growth plan the company established. Unmarried, Fields is survived by two sisters. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetary in Tupelo. This isn't my line but it may help someone else.

    3. Does anyone have family information about Ann FIELD and her husband Benjamin Roberts who were in Virginia, during early 1700's up to about 1780's. Who are parents to Ann? Is she a decendant of Abraham Field and Mary Ironmonger, or one of the Henry FIELDS. I think the Field family was in Spotsylvania or Culpeper counties in VA, but could be in other counties. Any information is appreciated. Thanks. Donald

    1. [FIELDS-L] Mary (Fernald) FIELD, m. 1773
    2. Bruce Bardes
    3. Here's an update on my search for Mary FERNALD, who married Daniel FIELD in Kittery, ME on 10 Jan 1773. I studied Jonni Sue Schilaty's FERNALD data base, at <http://members.aol.com/jsjs418/RFernald.html>. [Warning: AOL is case-sensitive; one must use jsjs418, not JSJS418.] There are a bunch of Mary FERNALDs in that data base, and several about the right age. I set up three "reasonableness" criteria to help me decide what the right age should be. (1) At least 16 at time of marriage, which means born before Jan 1757. (2) No more than 30 at time of marriage, which means born after Jan 1743. (3) Somewhere near her husband's age (Daniel FIELD was born 23 May 1749). The Mary FERNALDs who were married to someone else during the time when Mr. and Mrs. Daniel FIELD were raising their family are easily excluded. They were (using their father's name to identify them): NAME PARENTS (FERNALD omitted) DOB HUSBAND DOM MaryJoe Joseph and Anna Moore 16 May 46 Benj Gunnison 9 Aug 70 MaryTom Thomas and Mary Scriggins 46 George Rogers 30 Aug 70 MaryToby Tobias and Lucy Lewis 2 May 51 John Fernald 25 Nov 72 MaryJim James and Mary Fernald 20 Jun 53 John Rogers 10 Nov 76 MaryJohn John and Margaret Fernald 10 Apr 54 William Pierce 16 Nov 83 All of these ladies meet the reasonableness criteria, but they were all married to someone else, so they are irrelevant. The following Mary FERNALDs have no husbands in Jonni's data base, and one of them could have been Daniel FIELD's wife: NAME PARENTS (FERNALD omitted) DOB MaryAbe Abraham and Mary Trickey 21 May 1757 MaryHerc Hercules and Mary Tucker 29 Mar 1742 MaryNat Nathaniel and Mary Weeks 22 Aug 1741 Using the reasonableness criteria cited above, I would judge MaryAbe to be the most likely, but I have no supporting facts to make that call. Two Mary FERNALDs were widows of FERNALD men, and could have remarried as [Mrs.] Mary FERNALD. Mary LEWIS (DOB not given) married Joseph FERNALD (b. 25 May 1738) on 6 Oct 1759; Joseph died after 1763 in Ellsworth, Hancock, ME. Mary HAMMATT (DOB not given) married Tobias FERNALD (b. 7 Nov 1736) on 27 Nov 1760; Tobias died 1767 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY. I'd guess that Mary LEWIS and Mary HAMMATT were both older than MaryNat, judging from their husbands' birth dates. Also, given the locales where their husbands died, I have to question whether either was living in Kittery as a widow. Does anyone out there have any info to cut through this Gordian knot? Thanks for your help. Bruce Bardes

    1. [FIELDS-L] FIELDS: Daniel FIELD, Maine, bap. 1782, d. 1847
    2. Bruce Bardes
    3. Hello, FIELDS/FIELD Researchers -- We are ~100% sure that a Daniel Field married Abigail True in 1805 in Belfast, Waldo, ME. They had 6 daughters. He died in 1847 in Waldo County, ME. I'm a little less certain, but still pretty confident that this Daniel Field is the same one who was baptized 21 Jun 1782 in Kittery, York, ME. We believe that the parents of that Daniel were Daniel and Mary (Fernald) Field. I have a birth date for Daniel's next older brother Stephen of 19 Jul 1777 in Kittery. By our records, the next generation further back was Stephen Field and Jane Lary. The line goes back to Darby Field, who immigrated to York County, Maine in the 1600s. At least we think this is the line. Is anyone on this listserv researching this line? If so, I'd like to swap notes with you. Thanks in advance for your help. Bruce Bardes Montgomery, Ohio

    3. A number of times I have mentioned a problem of spelling the last name of Isaac's wife. There was a question if her name was Brown or Braun. I thought it might be Brewer. I have just found a copy of a marriage certific with her name spelled Sarah Brown. By birth dates it appears she might be Sarah Nakey Canoe daughter of Little Dragging Canoe or Sarah Brown, daughter of Alexander Brown, Jr. until proven otherwise. Anybody?? The reason I say might - is Sarah Nakey Canoe was born in Bedford Co., Virginia and the Fields family was from Randolph, Guilford Cos, N.C. and Grayson Co., Va. Also I need to know who Elizabeth Fields is for sure. I do not have dates for her but I do know she had a daughter named Celia Coomes b May 1899 and was from Fries, Grayson Co., Va. Patience

    3. Sorry to send this to the list, but Loyd's address was bounced back and I wanted him to receive this before he left. Thanks! Carole Dear Loyd, I live in Alpharetta, GA, an Atlanta suburb. I am descended from Pearson Fields who married Martha Jane Collins in 1853 in Pickens County, GA. Later census records indicate that Martha Jane was from South Carolina. Pearson joined the CSA in May of 1862 and died in September that same year of complications from the measles. He and Martha Jane had three children who lived: Martha Jane (married a Jefferson Harmon) George, and Nathaniel Jackson (my ancestor) who married Mary Frances Craig. There are a great deal of Fields in the Pickens and Cherokee County areas of North Georgia. I have been unable to locate any further information regarding Pearson. If you run across anything, please let me know. If there is anything I can do to expedite your trip, please let me know. Both Cherokee and Pickens Counties have recently published excellent county histories, complete with photographs and biographies of local families. Both can be found at the Cherokee County library in the genealogy room (but you have to ask). The Georgia Archives in downtown Atlanta has a lot of sources, but I have had great success at the Marietta Library Georgia room, too. Please let me know how I can help. Regards, Carole

    3. Hi, Loyd, What a generous offer! Thank you. My line of Field (no S) was briefly in Georgia, but I have no clue whether they were there long enough to leave any mark. Champion Taylor Field, b. 31 July 1825 is listed in the family Bible as having been born in Red Oak, Georgia, but in other sources as having been born in Pickins County, SC. He m. 5 October 1856 in Fayette County, GA, to Rillia Ann Matilda (Millie) Dodd, b. 6 Sep 1839, Fayette County, GA. Their first child, Iona Field, b. 9 Sep 1857, m. 1875 to Thomas Bryant, was b. Fayette Cty., but their other five children were born after the family migrated to Doddridge, Miller Cty., AR, where most of them lived out their lives and were eventually buried. Champ's parents were John and Elizabeth Field, but little else is known about them. Elizabeth may have been the daughter of Champ Taylor, listed in the 1820 census of Pendleton Co., SC, but that connection has never been proved. Champ was one of four known children and was husband to two more wives after Millie died. If you're able to discover anything about this family, I'd appreciate having the information. Thanks. Phyllis
