I have officially turned over the list to [email protected] (Noel Fields). He will be the new listowner. I was a little surprised a while back to find that there was no Mailing List on Rootsweb for the surname Fields. I requested that Rootsweb start a new list and I would be the listowner. They did so. I have been the listowner, as Rootsweb calls it, since the list first started. I know of several success stories that came from people posting genealogy information on the list. I hope these successes continue. I preferred to refer to myself as the list manager. The truth is I didn't really own anything. The list belonged to the members of the list as much as it did to me. It was just my responsibility to take care of certain things to see that it ran smoothly. All that ends now. I am no longer the list owner or manager or whatever. I am just another member with no more reponsibility except to treat everyone else courteously as I myself would prefer to be treated. I am sure Noel will do a good job. I sure hope so. This list is special to me, both because I originally started the list and because it is my own surname. Everyone can now welcome Noel Fields as the new listowner. I will be around but I do not expect any new information to come out about my line going back further into the past. Thank you all for putting up with me all this time. I now turn the list over to Noel. Randall Fields
Looking for anyone with information on Louis L. Fields b. cir 1840/1 and married to Martha (nee Washburn)McGowen 6-17-1863 in Knox Co. The family shows up on 1870 census in WhiteRiver Twp - Gibson Co. I have never been able to find Louis before or after this census. Is anyone checking this same line? Hello List Family Members, To make your query work harder for you... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS system: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember ! ! ! ! Many subscribers belong to multiple list servers; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields only. Unfortunately, messages with "My Family", "My Line", "My Grandfather", "My JONES", etc., as subjects are deleted without ever being opened. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again about once a quarter to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT...

Willema Fields: If you are out there, could you let me know your email address. I have been sending messages to you regarding the Fields and Burden but the messages keep bouncing. I keep hearing about this LDS online but it seems that it is unsure when it will get going. << Reply-to: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</A> (Dale H. McMasters) Subject: LDS FAMILY SEARCH COMING SOON As the director of a LDS Family History Center, I have received a notice from Salt Lake LDS FHL, announcing the Beta testing of Family Search on line. It is not yet up, a problem with a piece of equipment, but will be starting sometimes this month and will be up only a few weeks as a test run. If there is not a lot of interest it will be taken off and not put back on. So spread the word and keep trying to get through. When it comes on line the URL will be: > www.familysearch.org <. I have not been told exactly what will be available but know at least the Ancestral File and Family History Library Catalog will be included. Family Search is the name of the program we have on CDs in all LDS FHCs. Some public libraries also have this program. FS includes the IGI, Ancestral File, Family History Library Catalog, Social Security Death Records, Koran and Vietnam war death records, and Scottish Church Records. For those of you not familiar with the various searches, the IGI is the International Genealogical Index. It includes, in alphabetical order, all of the names that have been sent to the Temples to have ordinances performed in their name. Names in the IGI are usually submitted by members, but not always. Non-members also submit their family names to get them into the IGI. Some of the marriages may have been part of extraction programs. The names were taken from courthouse records and checked and rechecked by several volunteers before being accepted as correct. Most people do try to send in accurate information but there are many mistakes. My advice is, always check the original source. Use the IGI to find where people with your surname would have lived and order the census and court records from that area. Ancestral File is Gedcoms of group and pedigree sheets sent in by members and non-members. The name and address of the submitter is included and hopefully will allow you to contact others working on your line. If the address is out of date sometimes a letter to the Membership dept. in Salt Lake will get you a correct address if the person was a member of the LDS church. Once again, the material is only as good as the research that went into it and some of it is pretty bad. Check it out before you 'adopt' it. If you find a mistake on Ancestral File, you can send in your corrections, along with your sources of proof, and it will be noted in the next update. The first submitter does not have to provide proof, but you do, if you are making a correction. You can add additions to a file, or submit a new file. You do not have to be a member to submit material. The Family History Library Catalog is a listing of every book, film and fiche available at the Salt Lake City LDS Family History Library. This allows us to find what is available for each locality, world-wide. It includes the FHL call numbers and a description of what is included in the film/fiche or book. The material from the books and film/fiche will not be on line. That is not something they can do, at this time. Hopefully it will be a possibility some time in the distant future. The film and fiche will still have to be ordered through FHC. Microfilm and microfiche are the property of the FHL and are sent into the care of the LDS FHC director and must remain under her/his care until returned. For this reason they are never allowed to be taken from the LDS FHC. Almost all of the microfilm and microfiche at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City can be ordered into any LDS FHL, anywhere in the world, but there are a few exceptions. Copyright laws prevent them from using material without the written consent of the owner. Some of the film and fiche where filmed by companies other than the LDS Church and permission to circulate these film to LDS FHCs has been denied. There will be a notice included in the description, saying it can not be circulated. Many of the SC microfilm where made by a company who has refused permission to allow the film to be circulated, but there are many microfilm available for SC, some covering the same material that is on the restricted film. The LDS FHL is a non-profit organization, and that is why it still cost only 15 cents a sheet for a microfiche, $3.25 plus tax to rent a microfilm for a month [may be more in other countries] and the Source Guide and other home use programs are sold at such a reasonable price. We aren't allowed to make a profit, even in the FHCs. The books that are listed are not loaned out but can sometimes be obtained through an Inter-library loan through your public library. You can request copies of pages and if a book is indexed, by ordering the index you can see if your people would have been listed. In cases where the copyright has expired the book may have been filmed or can be filmed upon request. Never hurts to ask. >> Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.
Hello, I just subscribed to this list. Here goes with my lost family. John Fields, I know only that he died in Randolph Co, VA 1810-1814. His children who had migrated to Greene Co, OH made the trip back to Wood Co, VA (now WV) where they appeared in court to sign the deeds for the sale of John Fields estate on Beaver Creek in Randolph Co. That is the extent of my knowledge about him. Anyone know who this man was and who he married? It's just such an unusual name, HA HA. Aggie in Texas

Randall, thanks for all your help on the Field family web sight. I am unable both talent wise and time wise to offer to take over your list but just wanted to thank you. I too am at a standstill on my Ambrose Field. There are a lot of people out there who have asked for and received copies of my Field family and they have entered the information on the Web under their name as doing the work. Hope your feel better soon and that you have good luck finding the Crow's in your family.
I would like to remind everyone about the dangers of downloading files form people you do not know. Just this morning I received an e-mail where someone had subscribed to the mailing list. In the same group of e-mails I received an e-mail with an attached file. This was the same person that had jst subscribed to the mailing list. I simply deleted the e-mail withouit downloading the file. This is what I always do with files attached to e-mail from people I do not know. Attached files can contain viruses and other undesirable programs. It might not be a happy 99 if someone gets your password through an attached file. Randall Fields

I have been researching my 'old Ebenezer FIELDS' born circa 1770-75 thought to have been born in VA; hard as everyone has tried, we have yet to make a connection to any of the FIELDS out of VA. The first official record found for him is the 1797 KY Tax List. I have posted, posted, and posted some more on every possible site - all to no avail; well not really, have located some two dozen or more descendants of his. But alas, we are all stuck in the same place; some have been searching for 30 years. I came across two articles on a FIFIELD family; the names are in line; the dates 'fit'; and there are several Ebenezer's - one with a birthdate close enough to be 'my old Ebenezer'. Question: Does anyone know the origins of the name FIFIELD? Has anyone researching FIELD or FIELDS determined that their names 'way back there' was FIFIELD. Family tradition indicates he was of Welsh (or possibly Scottish) origins (so guess what books I'm reading now). Any and all comments/thoughts welcome. Liz Freeman In Oklahoma!
If anyone is interested in taking over control of this list e-mail me. I have been sick recently and have been unable to spend the time necessary to take care of this list properly. I have 3 mailing lists. Crow, Fields, and Samples. After Lori left the Samples Mailing List and there was no one to take it over I realized that the mailing list was just there and no one was managing it. Several people were still subscribed and I wanted help on my Samples line. So I asked Rootsweb if I could take over as Listowner and they agreed. Later Rootsweb asked me if I would take over control of the Crow Mailing List. The reason they asked me is because I was subscribed to the list and they knew I had taken the Samples list when it was without a listowner. I also asked Rootsweb to create a Fields Mailing List which they did. The truth is I have gone about as far as I can go with both the Fields and Samples lines and I actualy only have one Crow in my files. This Crow Ihave is actually in my wife's line. There was a Mary Elizabeth Crow who married a Joe Evans and was my wife's great grandparents. I have not gone any further back on either the Crow or Evans line. I may be rambling a little this morning. The point is that with my health the way it is and with the other obligations I have I am unable to stay on as listowner any more. So if anyone would like to take over any of these three lists just e-mail me. Being a listowner takes a very small amount of extra time. You will want to read all the e-mail that comes to your list to make sure there are no violations of list rules and you will have to spend some time helping people get subscribed and unsubscribed. I am looking for information about my great-grandfather, John Terrell Fields. I do not have a date of birth or date of death, he was born in South Carolina. John T. Fields married Lucy Susan Watts Jennings, born 9/17/1845, in Richmond, Va. She died 1/22/1927 and is buried in Caruthersville, Missouri. John and Lucy Fields had three children: 1. Linnie (or Lennie) Mae Fields, born 5/8/1878, died 1947. Married Don Holman, a Methodist minister. 2. Julia Ann Fields, born March 27, 1877. Married George Taylor. 3. Carroll Doyle Fields, my grandfather, born 2/9/1880, in Gayoso, Missouri. He was a merchant. He died 6/9/1945, and was buried in Caruthersville, Missouri. Any help would be appreciated.
In my husband's line, Jane J. FIELDS married Andrew MCMILLAN. Their daughter Marion McMillan was born 29 March 1816 NC. I would be delighted to hear from anyone researching this line. Roberta Sharp [email protected]

The reason for joining the mailing list was to learn more about your ancestors. The list is useless if it is not used. The best way to find ancestors is to post to the list at least once per month. That way as newer subscribers come on board they all get a chance to hear from you. If you are new to genealogy or new to the internet please do ask questions. There is someone among your "cousins" that surely knows the answer or can find it for you. List Manager Randall Fields
FIELDS LIST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND RULES PURPOSE OF THIS LIST: This list is a method of communication among and between people world-wide who are researching the genealogy, heritage, and culture of persons with the surname FIELDS. Messages posted to this list should pertain to the FIELDS surname and persons, living and deceased, possessing the FIELDS surname. There is no charge for subscribing to this list. However, the sponsors of this list (RootsWeb) welcome donations of any size. At the present time, the list is open to anyone who wishes to subscribe. SPONSORS OF THE LIST: The FIELDS list is sponsored by the good folks at RootsWeb. The list is open to all people interested in the FIELDS surname. WHO TO CONTACT: If you experience trouble using this list or have a concern about the administration of this list or have a concern about posting to this list, please contact the Listowner, Randall Fields at [email protected] FORM OF THIS LIST: This is a email distribution list. All email sent to a single email address ([email protected]) are automatically re-distributed to hundreds of subscribers world wide. There are two versions of distribution available: Standard and Digest. Standard re-distributes each message as it is received; Digest collects several messages and re-distributes them as a single email, typically once a day. (See below for information on subscribing and unsubscribing.) SENDING MESSAGES TO THE LIST: To send a message to the list, simply address it to [email protected] This will distribute the message to both FIELDS-L and FIELDS-D lists. However, there are certain rules to follow when sending your message. Using this format will help ensure your message is read by an interested recipient and lessen the likelihood that the message will be discarded, unread, as junk email. The Subject line of your message should follow this format: 1. The word FIELDS should be the first word in subject line and should be in all capital letters. This should be followed by a first name (if appropriate) locale abbreviation, a direction of migration, another locale abbreviation, and the approximate dates. For instance, Richard Fields, moving from Scotland to New Brunswick, Canada, to Kentucky around 1820 to 1840 would look like: SCOTT, George SCT>NB CAN>KY abt. 1820-1840 If you don't know the complete name, migration route, or dates, it is permissible to leave them out of the subject line and put an explanation in the message body. However, the more complete the subject line, the more likely someone with a similar interest will read your email. 2. Keep you message to the point. A short message is more likely to be read than a lengthy one. Be sure to include all known vital statistics and indicate if they are certain -from primary documents like church records and birth certificates - or less accurate sources like census records. Include names of spouse(s), children, locale, etc. All the clues that might give the recipient an idea of whether there might be a connect. But don't forget that a short message can always be followed up with a longer, more detailed message if there is the likelihood of a connection and short messages are more likely to be read! Some email servers limit the size of messages, so keep your message to about a typewritten page or two at the very most. (This message violates this rule. Oops!) 3. Always include your name and how to reach you in the body of your message. Sometimes email headers get messed up and your return email address isn't obvious. SENDING MESSAGES: Please DO NOT send your message to more than one list or individual recipient UNLESS there is a CLEAR connection that legitimatizes such distribution. For example, a message concerning a family named FIELDS with daughters marrying into Johnstone, Douglas, and Kerr families should be written to be relevant to each list and not a single message distributed to several lists. On the other hand, a family named FIELDS who lived in the Borders region of Scotland and moved to New Brunswick, Canada may be a good candidate for the FIELDS, BORDERS, and NEW BRUNSWICK lists. ([email protected], [email protected]) Please use good judgement. Sending the same message to multiple, unwilling recipients is considered "spamming" and is in poor taste. Remember, too, that if you address your message to FIELDS-L and cc: to all your relations, the whole world-wide mailing list now has Aunt Mary's email address and who knows what they will do with it. Also, when someone hits the "Reply" button to your message, it may default to sending the reply to everyone you sent your message to. Aunt Mary will start receiving some email she didn't want and will cut you out of her Will! Most email software has a way to send a blind copy to a recipient so anyone else the message was sent to has no knowledge of who the original message was addressed to and the "Reply" button can't send a message to everyone who got the original message. (AOL subscribers can put parenthesis around an outbound email address to make it a "blind" address.) MESSAGE CONTENT: This list is intended for free exchange of FIELDS information. Anything that is not relevant to the FIELDS surname, heritage of persons possessing the FIELDS surname, or history and culture surrounding persons possessing the FIELDS surname is not appropriate to this list. Examples of messages not appropriate to this list are: jokes, recipes, announcement of events (not related to the FIELDS surname), warnings about viruses, warnings about Internet legislation, etc., anything off-colour or lewd, personal attacks, racist or ethnic slurs, political statements (not historical references relevant to heritage, culture, history, etc.), and commercial advertisements. One exception to advertisements is that some e-mail services such as YAHOO or JUNO add their own ads to e-mail that is sent out. This type of ad is unavoidable. PLEASE, no email with attached files sent to the list. These will be rejected automatically by the Rootsweb server. PLEASE, send your messages in plain text. No HTML code or "enhanced text", please. (Most people only get a long email of gibberish when you send HTML- enhanced code.) Messages with enhanced text may be rejected by the Rootsweb server. RECEIVING MESSAGES: Due to Internet traffic or routine RootWeb maintenance, it may take several hours for your email message to be distributed. However, it rarely takes more than a few minutes and it is extremely rare for a properly formated email message to the list to get lost. If your message does not appear to have been re-distributed, please wait several hours or a day before re-sending it. REPLYING TO MESSAGES: Please do not reply to the FIELDS list address ([email protected]) unless the reply in some way clarifies or amplifies the original sender's message and would be of general interest to the MAJORITY of subscribers of the list. Please RESPOND DIRECTLY to the original sender's email address directly in all other cases. (One exception: If you have made a connection with another subscriber's family research, we'd probably like to know of your success!) LOCATING A PAST EMAIL MESSAGE: The email archiving/search mechanism has recently been unveiled and is constantly being enhanced and improved. If you want to give it a whirl, take a look at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl It does assume you know the name of the list you want to search. But it's not too fussy about how you type it: for the FIELDS list, you can ask for fields, Fields, FIELDS, fielDs-L, and FiElDs-D, and still succeed. It includes messages through about a week ago. New messages will be added every week or two. (It took literally hours to do the indexing, and we'll have to turn the search off whenever we re-index, so this will only be done every few weeks unless we find a solution.) We haven't turned on the threaded archives for all lists yet. DISCIPLINARY ACTION/REMOVAL FROM THE LIST: With the intent of maintaining harmony and focus to the list, sponsors of the FIELDS list reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. The intent of the list is for free and open discourse. However, if improper conduct is detected and the culprit refuses to cease and desist, that person may be removed from the list's distribution and prevented from posting further messages to the list. This is extreme action and will not be used except with extreme provocation. SUBSCRIBING TO THE LIST: If you'd like to subscribe or unsubscribe to this mailing list, simply send an email message to [email protected] with the message SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE - depending on your intent - and nothing else (no signature). Anything on the subject line will do. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the FIELDS-D list. This list contains the same messages as the FIELDS-L list, but are gathered and sent in one combined message on a daily basis - assuming at least one message was sent to the list. To subscribe or unsubscribe to this list, send a message to FIELDS-D- [email protected] with only the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body. Messages to FIELDS-D list subscribers should be directed to [email protected] - this insures subscribers to both versions of the list receive your message. Allow at least a day for the subscribe or unsubscribe request to take effect. There are often several messages in the pipeline before yours. If you have any difficulty subscribing/unsubscribing or sending messages to the list, please feel free to contact Randall Fields at [email protected]
