    3. Hi List, The article on George Fields, by Carselowey, is very good but I would like to throw in something that may be in error. George Fields is my ggg grandfather. He and his wife Sarah are buried in a little cemetery just north of Locust Grove in Mayes County, OK. His tombstone states his date of death as 14 April 1849 and it says he was 84 years old at the time. This would put his birth ca. 1765. If you base his brother's, Chief Richard, birth on his, it would make him born at least a couple of years earlier than 1765. Sarah Coody Fields died 31 July 1857 and she was 77 years old, putting her birth ca. 1780. The books "Our People & Where They Rest" mistakenly lists George Fields date of death as 1858. Hope this helps a little with your search for Chief Richard's date of birth. 3. Hi List, Hope this may help the descendants of George Fields, brother of Chief Richard. Dorothy Welsh From: CHEROKEE PIONEERS by James M. Carselowey "George fields, pioneer Cherokee, son of Richard Fields [I] and Susannah Emory and grandson of william Emory and Mary Grant, died at his home in Delaware district, April 14, 1849, at the age of 80 years. He was born 1769 in TN. He first married Nancy Brown, and later married Sarah Coodey. He was a brother of chief Richard Fields of the Texas Cherokees. He was a half brother of Bushyhead, father of Rev. Jesse Bushyhead. The elder Bushyhead married Nancy Foreman. Goerge Fields was also a half brother of Judge John Martin, born Oct. 20, 1781, died Fort Gibson 1840. Thie Judge was the son of General Joseph Martin of Virginia, a veteran of the American Revolution. "George Fields' son-in-law was Assiistant Principal Chief Richard Taylor, long prominant in Cherokee affairs and who built the old National Hotel in Tahlequah. He was a great-grandson of Ludovac [sic] and Mary Grant, who came among the Cherokee in the early 1700s operating trading posts. "Susannah Emory was first married to Captain John Stuart who was commander of British Fort Louden, on the Tennessee River. They were the parents of the one child, Bushyhead. She then married Richard Fields [I]. Her third marriage was with General Joseph Martin of Virginia." One thing, if 1769 is the birth date of George Fields, it does give a ball park time for Chief Richard's birthdate since Chief Richard was the first child. He likely was born 1767-68.

    3. Hi Linda, I see that you are in Lompoc! My maiden name is Fields and my family is originally from that area -- my grandfather was born in Lompoc, and his parents were married there. My gggrandparents, Edmund Fields and Lucy Ann Brooks, settled in Santa Barbara County in the 1870's, having moved there from Illinois (with a brief stay in Glenn and Colusa Co.'s in California). Edmund died in Lompoc on October 9, 1903, and Lucy Ann died in Betteravia on April 18, 1918. They had the following children: 1. William Benton Fields b. 1857 IL 2. Katherine Susanna Fields b. 1859 IL, married Samuel Toucy COINER 1875, Los Alamos, CA 3. John Wesley Fields b. 1861 IL 4. Ezra Grant Fields b. Mar 25, 1864, Springfield, IL, d. March 25, 1924, Santa Maria, CA, married Josephine Jamison May 1, 1888 5. Jonathan Willis Fields b. 1866 IL 6. Cora Ann Fields b. 1869 CA (twin) 7. Frank Dillon Fields b. 1869 CA (twin) 8. Elmer Morgan Fields b. Oct 20, 1872, Glenn County, CA, d. Feb 1, 1948, Pendleton, OR, married Winnifred Augusta Williams Sept 22, 1908, Lompoc, CA 9. Charles Coward Fields b. 1875 CA, d. Feb 21, 1909 Santa Ynez, CA (killed in rafting accident) 10. Corley Fields b. 1878 CA 11. Harry Martin Fields b. 1880 CA, died in infancy Linda, I have found a couple of commonalities in my Fields line. First of all, there is a tendency towards twins. As you can see, there is a set of twins in the above line. My grandfather's sister (the daughter of Elmer Morgan Fields and Winnifred Augusta Williams, listed above) had 2 sets of twins. Secondly, there appears to be some occurence of Alzheimer's Disease, or at least some senility in old age. Ezra Grant Fields and Elmer Morgan Fields (my ggrandfather) both died in sanitariums of "extreme senility" according to their death certificates -- this was before Alzheimer's was a classified disease, however. My grandfather's brother, Clayton Fields (son of Elmer Morgan Fields), died of Alzheimer's about 8 years ago. There are still quite a few Fields in your area. Many descendants of Ezra Grant Fields are in the Santa Maria area. In fact, I recently made contact with his ggrandson, Ed Fields III. Some directions to point you in -- the local genealogical/historical societies have been invaluable to me. The Santa Barbara County Historical Society (especially Helen Rydell) was a great jumping off point, providing me with some published biographical information, as well as some greatly needed vital statistic data. Next, the Santa Maria and Vandenburg genealogical societies were extremely helpful in finding all of Edmund and Lucy's children and charting out their descendants. I then used Yahoo to look up Fields in that area and managed to connect with Ed Fields III. I hope this helps. If we can connect in any way at all, PLEASE let me know. I would love to have a partner on this family. I have a stack of photographs of the Fields family, none of which are labeled, and my grandfather went blind about 9 years ago (before I jumped into genealogy) and can not identify any. Quite a quest, let me tell you. On another interesting note, my step-father's mother, Valerie Sage, totally unrelated to the Fields family, lives in Solvang. She and my step-grandfather, Carl Sage, used to manage the Best Western Andersen motel in Buellton -- love the pea soup there! 3. I was reading about The Fields families mentioned in the Bicentennial Heritage of Grayson Co., Va. 1793. There is a Joseph Fields, Sr. b 1763, in Guilford Co., NC., who was the first Fields to settle in Grayson Co., Va. in 1783. The children are named: Joseph, William m Mary "Polly", Jeremiah, Polly, Ruth, Jane, Rachel, Margaret, Andrew etc. That is children and grandchildren. Isaac Isaiah Fields b abt. 1802, was also from Guilford and Randolph Cos., NC. I believe he was born in Randolph, some of his children were born in Guilford then they moved in 1842 to Grayson Co., Va. The children are named: Jeremiah M., Polly (sister of my grandmother) Celia Elizabeth, Amanda, Henry, Isaac, John Andrew, Sarah, children and grandchildren. His brothers were Isaac, Abner, Robert, Benjamin and Ira., Uncles Benjamin and Jeremiah. Great Uncles: Jeremiah, Robert, William, John, Joseph Does anyone know if these two families are related. The names of the children are nearly the same.
