    1. [FIELDS-L] You know your a genealogist when...
    2. Noel Fields
    3. This is what we have so far! 'When you remember your gggrandmother's birthday but not your nephew's' You brake for libraries. You hyperventilate at the sight of an old cemetery. You would rather browse in a cemetery than a shopping mall. You would rather read census schedules than a good book. You are more interested in what happened in 1698 than 1998. You think every home should have a copier and microfilm reader. You know every registrar of deeds in the state by name, but... they lock the doors when they see you coming. You store your clothes under the bed because ...your closet is full of books and papers. All your correspondence begins “Dear Cousin”. You have traced every one of your ancestors back to Adam and Eve, have it documented, and still don’t want to quit” WHO EVER WROTE THE SONG, "I'M MY OWN GRANDPA" must have been a genealogist. that could be turned a number of ways, including : when: you find you that are your own grandpa. betty........ ...you can recite the last 7 generations, but can't remember your son's name. You know you are a genealogist when you know more dead people than living. Keep them coming! I think we have something started here <grin> Just think to yourself all those times when you told someone you do genealogy, and they look at you and ask "Why??" This is our revenge on why! Noel

    1. [FIELDS-L] input needed :)
    2. Noel Fields
    3. Ok, I want to put a new section to my genealogy webpage, that is devoted to the saying "You know your a genealogist when...." I thought since we have all been bitten by the genealogy bug, we all probably had some sayings that fit such. I would love to hear your input on such. Ones I have so far are things like You know your a genealogist when.... You sign your checks in soundex You have a place in your monthly budget for vital record ordering Everytime you take a vacation, you look for cemetaries first to visit You start reciting gedcom fields in your sleep Etc. Lets hear what you would add.... Noel Fields List Owner P.s. Oh yeah, I have a webpage that has my Fields information on it :) Its homepages.rootsweb.com/~noelf (don't put www first, it won't work). I am currently putting a new area on there, that will be a Fields Surname Resource center, for everyone that is looking for any Fields (a central gathering point if you will).

    3. I really don't know much about them. I just found out a week or so ago who Nelson's father was and when I found that, the dam broke and using F. G. Pierces' book, which is apparently suspect, I've learned about many more generations. I don't have the book, so I'm depending on those that do to give me information. I'm hoping to receive more information about F. G. Pierce's book shortly. Hopefully, it will shed some light on its reliability. It seems that there are many descendants of this Field family line in Tioga Co., PA into the late 1800's and early 1900's, judging from the tombstones found in area cemeteries. I've posted all that I've found so far, but many more cemeteries to go. They all seem to come from the two brothers that settled there, Zenas and Col. Isaac Field. Jack D. Davis Jack D. 3. I believe this Field family line may be related to those Field's found in Tioga, PA around Wellboro in the 1850 census and prior to that. Those families are Zenas Field, b abt. 1775 in NH and his sons Moses, Eliphaz, Isaac and Nelson, all b. in VT. Zenas father is Moses Dickenson Field and his father, Moses Field. Zenas' brother Col. Isaac Field and his son Prescott are also there. They all are descended from Zechariah Field (according to the book by Pierce). I'm descended from Nelson Field. Jack D. Davis A. 1. [FIELDS-L] New Phone Scam
    2. Hi All! I received this from one of my genealogy friends. Thought I'd pass it on. There's a new phone scam. Carol I received a telephone call yesterday from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a test on our telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should press nine(9), zero(0) the pound sign (#) and then hang up. I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pressing 90# you give the individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with Southwestern Bell, MCI, and GTE. Please beware. DO NOT PRESS 90# FOR ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested I share this information with others. PLEASE pass this on to everyone you know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information to them, too.

    2. Jack D. Davis
    3. As they all are, Bob. Still it is much more than I had before. I have already found errors. Typos maybe. The birthdate for Zenas, for instance, is given as 1795, yet his sons, according to the 1850 Delmar census were born in VT abt 1803, 1806 and 1810 (Nelson unknown). The 1850 Delmar census also gives Zenas age as 74, as do two newspaper abstracts on Joyce Tices Tioga Co., PA page, giving his death on Nov. 2, 1850 at the age of 74. this would put his birthdate as 1775. This might be a typo or maybe the transcriber misread it. Who knows? Before it was a "dead end" Now it's an "open book" Thanks for commenting. I always take these old books with an open mind. They do have errors. Another book in my family is "Forerunners" about the Stricklers in Page Co., VA It also has many errors. They are, after all, written by humans, most with good intentions and some with bad intentions (as in Fake), but I believe F. G. Pierce had good intentions and did his best with what was available to him at the time as did the Strickler that wrote "Forerunners" (Harry?). Their task must have been tough, given the trouble getting documents in those days. If only they had the "Internet" back then The question in my mind, now is how do we correct these old books, like the birthdate of Zenas, so that future researchers get the best information available? Jack D. Davis [email protected] wrote: > Jack- > > Please do not take Pierce and his book too seriously. It is full of holes > and misinformation. BobHop

    3. I've finally been able to attach all of those Field families to an immigrant ancestor. Thanks to Joyce and her volunteers and a reply to a post in Field Gen Forum by Peter Forshay. The rest came from F. G. Pierces "Field Genealogy" via Dick Casey. My ggrandfather, George Washington Field was b. 1840 in Tioga Co, PA. I recently learned that his mother was Martha Jane McEwen of Tioga, PA and from Joyce's pages I found a Tioga Eagle newpaper abstract that shows a Nelson Field m. Martha McEwen 11/1839. Nelson is my gggrandfather. I found no ither mention of Nelson on Joyces pages, but there are several other Field families there in the same time period; Moses, Zenas, Eliphaz, Isaac, Col. Isaac (deceased), Prescott. Most from VT except Zenas (living with Moses in 1850 census) who was from NH. The post from Peter Forshay tells me that Zenas had sons Moses, Eliphaz, Isaac and NELSON and that Zenas is descandent of Zechariah Field, b abt. 1596, East Ardsley, England, d June 30, 1666, Hatfield, MA. Roland, this is the same family (I'm told) that Cyrus West Field is descended from. I don't yet know where the connection is, but it is, supposedly, well documented in the book "Field Genealogy" by F. G. Pierce. Dick Casey has sent me the direct line from Roger Del Feld, b 1240, Sowerby, England to Nelson Field, Tioga, PA from that book. I've still not found any mention of the "Field" names that you have posted, in Tioga Co. This is the "dead end" that I've been trying to break through for many months. The dam has busted and now all that's left is to fill in the blanks. Ahhh! But I have other dead ends to be worked on. Back to work Many, Many thanks to Joyce, her volunteers, Peter Forshay and Dick Casey and others, too. Jack D. Davis

    3. Hello, I am new to this list and wonder if someone may be able to help me. I am looking for additional information on my GGGrandmother or her parents. Here is what I know so far. Ellen Field, born in Chester, Windsor, VT - Dec. 12, 1830. Died June 20, 1888 of typhoid pneumonia in Ludlow, Windsor, VT - also buried there. She was the daughter of Pardon Field and Mary Howard. Ellen married John L Fuller probably around 1850-1851. They had five children all born, I believe, in Chester, VT. The only information I have on her parents, Pardon Field - Mary Howard are their names. I am assuming they were married approx 1828- 1829 in VT. Expected birth dates 1800-1809. I know this isn't a lot to go on but if anyone could give me any leads, I would be most grateful. Thanking you for your time and consideration. Eileen [email protected]

    3. I am seeking to identify the family of Nancy deVery Fields. She was born 25 Dec 1807 in Guilford Co. NC and married on 10 Sep 1824 (also Guilford Co.) to Jonathon Demetrus Trotter (b. 5 Oct 1800 in Wake Co., NC). I believe she is the daughter "Nancy" mentioned in the will of William Fields, Guilford Co., NC, made 24 Mar 1815. This William was married to Nancy Armfield. It is known that Nancy deVery and Jonathon had at least one grandchild with the given name Armfield. Jonathon and Nancy had at least two children born in NC, William in 1826 and Mark Field on 11 Sep 1826, born in Greensboro, NC. It is not known when the couple moved to Gallatin, Davies County, in western MO. They had a total of 8 children, the last six were Richard B., b 1831; Mariah, b 1835; Johathon M.; Thomas M., b 1843; and Malinda Nancy, b 23 Sep 1844. Nancy died on 16 mar 1886, Jonathon on 3 May 1861. Both are buried on the family farn near Gallatin, MO. My wife is descended from Malinda Nancy, who married Thomas Tyler Weir in 1859 in Davies County, MO. If you have any information that would prove her "NANCY DEVERY" as the daughter of William Field of Guilford Co., NC, or if the name "deVery" is familiar to you, I would love to hear from you. 3. I am looking for information on my great grandmother Minvera. She was born in Georgia about 1857 and her brother Asberry/Asbury was born in Georgia in 1852. Their mother's name was Elizabeth and their father may have been kill in Civil War. There were probably more children but I don't know their names. They moved to Jefferson County, Alabama. Minerva married Isaac Marion Vines in Jefferson Co and died in that county in 1909. Their children were Maud, Linnie Mae, Lee, and Zella. Asberry moved to Weatherford, Texas and had at least three children: Leroy, Willie, and Pearl. I would appreciate any help on finding anything about these people. Thanks, Zella Fuller [email protected]
