Rolff 1. The naming of Mary's children works very well with this Allen theory: a. JOHN FIELDS: It seems more and more likely that this was the name of Nathaniel's father, consistant with the tradition of naming the firstborn son after the father of the father. b. ANSEL FIELDS: c. AGATHA FIELDS: d. WILLIAM FIELDS: Would likely be named after Mary's father, William Allen e. OBEDIAH FIELDS: f. SUSANNA FIELDS: Would likely be named after Susanna Allen, Mary's sister g. ROBERT NELSON PLEASANTS FIELDS: In Albemarle Co., Va., where the William Allen family lived there was a Robert Fields living who seems to be of the same generation as Nathaniel Fields. It's likely that Nathaniel Fields was in Albemarle Co., Va. to meet Mary Allen. In 1751 when William Allen wrote his will his daughter Mary was still single. In 1752 Mary Allen Fields had her first child, John Fields. Mary was 14 in 1752. There is only that small window of opportunity 1751/52 for Nathaniel and Mary to meet and marry. In 1746 in Albemarle Co., Va. Stephan and David Fields were bound out. These are likely brothers of Nathaniel Fields from earlier research. I contend that Robert Fields in Albemarle Co., Va. was another brother of Nathaniel Fields, and that this child of Mary Fields named Robert was named after him. A daughter of Robert Fields of Albemarle Co., Va. married a NELSON Moss, and there were records of the Nelson and Pleasants families in that county, so it might seem that Robert Nelson Pleasants Fields got his names from his uncle Robert and two neighbor or kin families. h. ALLEN: What better circumstantial evidence could there be than to have a child named for the family that Mary came from? (Researchers will note that I have omitted Elijah Fields as son of Nathaniel and Mary, and added Obediah Fields as a son. Bill has shown that there are many reasons to believe that Obediah was a son, but no record of an Elijah after the Land Patent, so it's apparent that Ralph Gorrell the name Obediah confused with the name of the neighbor Elijah Joyce.) 2. The fact that in Albemarle Co., Va. there is this William and Mary Hunt Allen family available, and that that family did have a daughter Mary, born in 1738, who in 1751 was single in a county that did have a Fields family in residence. No record of Nathaniel Fields has been found in Albemarle Co., but several Fields records have been found. 3. The fact that Mary Fields was in VERY close association with other children of William and Mary Hunt Allen through her widowhood in Rockingham Co., N.C., as follows: a. Elijah Joyce lived on land in Rockingham Co., N.C. that adjoined the land of Mary Allen Fields, and his name appears on several Fields records, and Fields names on his records. The wife of Elijah Joyce was Elizabeth Allen, a daughter of Valentine Allen, brother of Mary Allen Fields. b. Valentine Allen, a son of William and Mary Hunt Allen, lived on land in Rockingham Co., N.C. that adjoined Turbefield Barnes, whose wife was Agatha Fields, daughter of Mary Allen Fields. There were also other associations. c. William Hunt Allen "of Buckingham Co., Va.", another son of William and Mary Hunt Allen, sold to the Irion family "of Bedford Co., Va.", the Rockingham Co., N.C land that they moved to. In Rockingham Co., N.C. this Irion family had associations with relatives of Nathaniel Fields. d. Mary Allen Field's son John was very closely associated on several records to the Nathaniel Scales family. Several children of Valentine Allen married the children of this Scales family. e. Judith Allen, sister of Mary Allen Fields, was married to Hutchins Burton. In fact, three generations of Hutchins Burtons married into the Allen family. Fields associations have also been found with Hutchins Burtons, including the fact that a Hutchins Burton was a 2nd Lt. in the same 6th Virginia Regiment in which Nathaniel Fields served, and in fact they both died at around the same time in early 1777. We aren't sure which Hutchins Burton this was, but Bill has suggested that this one in the 6th Regiment was a son of the Hutchins Burton who had married Judith Allen, so a nephew of Mary Allen Fields. Also, in 1792 there's a Rockingham Co., N.C. deed that includes Hutchins Burton and several people familiar to the Mary Allen Fields family. Certainly this couldn't be the same Hutchins Burton who died in 1777 in the 6th Regiment with Nathaniel Fields, but surely a relative of some sort. Also, Obediah Fields, son of Nathaniel and Mary Allen Fields, married a Catharine BURTON. They named a son Joseph BURTON Fields. Joseph named two sons John H.B. Fields and Thomas H.B. Fields, very possibly John Hutchins Burton Fields and Thomas Hutchins Burton Fields. f. Mary Allen Field's brother Samuel Allen was certainly familiar with the Fields family. He married Martha Archer, grandaughter of Peter Field, they named children Patty Field Allen and Field Allen, and a daughter married Peter Field Jefferson, a grandson of Peter Field. 4. a Rockingham Co., N.C. Court record of 1787 states that William Hunt Allen of Buckingham Co., Va. gave a female slave to Valentine Allen Jr. after the death of Mary Anglin. The will of William Allen, father of Mary Allen Fields, was witnessed by Adrian Anglin, and Adrian Anglin witnessed a Valentine Allen deed in 1752. Adrian Anglin was known to have had 2 wives, Elizabeth Gates and Mary Thornhill. On October 31, 1753, in Lunenburg Co., Va., Mary Hunt Allen married Field Jefferson after a prenuptual agreement. In 1765 the will of Field Jefferson was probated in Mecklenberg Co., Va., in which he left wife Mary a gold ring. I see a good possibility that Mary Hunt Allen Jefferson, mother of Mary Allen Fields, married Adrian Anglin after 1765 and after the death of Mary Thornhill Anglin. Researchers could easily mistake wife "Mary"#2 for wife "Mary" #3(Mary Allen). Adrian Anglin had a son Adrian Jr. born in 1752. Phillip Anglin, born in 1742, son of Adrian Anglin Sr., moved to Rockingham Co., N.C. and later sold his land there to Peter Field Trent, surely a descendant of Peter Field. If Mary Hunt Allen did marry Adrian Anglin, Phillip Anglin would have been a child in that household, so his moving later to Rockingham Co., N.C. would have probably been because of his earlier association with step-siblings, Valentine Allen, William Hunt Allen, and Mary Allen Fields. There was also a James Anglin who witnessed Kentucky deeds of William Strong, who was a grandnephew of Nathaniel Fields. Mary Hunt Allen had been married to Robert Minge before marrying William Allen. A bible record has been found that states that Mary Hunt Minge Allen Jefferson died in 1763. This could be possible, because the will of Field Jefferson that was probated in 1765 had been written in 1762. If Mary did die in 1763 she would not have married Adrian Anglin, but rather would have died as Mary Jefferson. It's possible that she left a will or some estate record, most likely in Lunenburg Co., Va. >> >> >> >> --part1_91abf165.249c010e_boundary--

Could he be Isaac Isaiah Fields and who is Rebeca Brown? I have Isaac Isaiah Fields married to Sarah Brown,Braun or Brewer. Does anyone know for sure which is correct. In 1860 Grayson Co. Va. Census a Polly Brewer was staying with Isaac and Sarah who was very near the age of Sarah. Isaac Isaiah Fields was from Guilford Co., NC. then moved to Grayson Co., Va. where he lived the rest of his life. I would like to have some verification of his wife or wives. Patience

    1. [FIELDS-L] Hassie Short Fields
    2. Looking for info on this elusive ancestor & her husband. Maynor is my primary research, but also connected to Fields, Phillips, Davis in Chatham & Moore Counties, NC. Any assistance or leads is greatly appreciated! Sandra in Durham,NC Cornealius J. (Neal) MAYNOR was born 8-17-1869. His parents were William Judson & Mary Ann Phillips MAYNOR of Chatham/Moore. CJ's brother, Angus Edgar, was my grandfather (he was also a barber by trade). CJ married Hassie Short Fields (age 23, born 1862) at the bride's home in Carthage. Her parents were John & Sarah A. Short Fields. (Sarah's mother was Margaret Short---her sisters were Elizabeth, Carolina & Ellen Short Fields. Margaret Short's will was filed in 1873, Moore Cty). In January 1900, CJ and Hassie sold part of Hassie's estate in Carthage, Moore Cty. In 1903 a judgement was filed against them for the remainder of the estate. The land was on the old River Road #1006 that heads to the horseshoe "old Tyson Rd" and on Crawley's Creek. Cornelius Maynord & Hassie are listed in the 1900 city directory for Durham. He was a barber by trade. He is also listed as a barber in 1903-04 in Durham. The 1911-12 Durham City Directory lists a Miss Hassie Maynor (age 40)as a boarder at a private home. The obit for CJ's father says he is living in Cleveland, Ohio in 1926. I have not been able to find a trace of either one of them since the 1926 listing. Research in Cleveland has not turned up a thing. Does anyone know my "Hassie", what happened to her, or any of her living relatives? I have other odds & ends about this family that I would be happy to share.

This comes from a book on passengers to the colonies, but the originial listing is in: THE ORIGINAL LISTS OF PERSONS OF QUALITY, 1600-1700, Edited by John Camden Hotten, published by the Balitmore Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1986. I think this book is available in many libraries. I found the Persons of Quality book in the Tulsa, OK, genealogy library, 22nd Place and Harvard. Hope this helps. Dorothy Welsh

    3. Well the responses I have received on this idea have been extremely positive, so towards the end of this week I should be able to start setting it up somewhat. Just remember, for it to work, we'll need all of you to pass on goodies! I can handle the construction and such of the page, but I will welcome suggestions on how to handle different issues. To start off, this is what I am thinking of, as a good start. I would like to see a place where we can have different gedcoms (for different branches), documents, pictures, and links to other Fields sites. Also we will have either a inhouse query setup, or something a little more fancy (depending on what I can scrape up here). If you can think of something else we should have, speak up <grin>. Hopefully if we do this right, it will become a nice place for all of us to gather and share. I'm still convinced that my Fields ancestors went out of their way to hide from us researchers, so this would be a way to get back at them! Noel - Listmanager

    3. Hi Terry, I'm sorry, but none of these names sound familiar at all. However, I know very little about my Fields line (my maiden name). The earliest ancestor I have found thus far is my gg-grandfather, Edmund Fields b. 1830 in Illinois, specific location unknown. He married about 1856 Lucy Ann Brooks of either PA or IN. I have not been able to find a marriage record for this couple in Illinois, I have also not able to find this couple on the 1850 or 1860 Illinois census. According to family records, their first child, William Benton Fields, was born 1857 in IL, again I have not been able to find a more official record of this. I do have a record of their fourth child, Ezra Grant Fields, b. 1864 in Springfield, IL. Complete list as follows: (1) William Benton Fields b. 1857 IL (2) Katherine Susanna Fields b. 1859 IL, m. 1875 Los Alamos, CA Samuel Toucy Coiner (3) John Wesley Fields b. 1861 IL (4) Ezra Grant Fields b. 3/25/1864 Springfield, IL, m. 5/1/1888 Josephine Jamison, d. 3/25/1924 Santa Maria, CA (5) Jonathan Willis Fields b. 1866 IL (6) Cora Ann Fields b. 1869 CA (twin) (7) Frank Dillon Fields b. 1869 CA (twin) (8) Elmer Morgan Fields b. 10/20/1872 Glenn County, CA, m. 9/22/1908 Lompoc, CA Winnifred Williams, d. 2/1/1948 Pendleton, OR (my g-grandparents) (9) Charles Coward Fields b. 1875 CA, d. 2/21/1909 Santa Ynez, CA in a rafting accident (10) Corley Fields b. 1878 CA (11) Harry Martin Fields b. 1880 CA, died in infancy This family emigrated to California via the Oregon Trail between 1866 and 1869 (judging from the birth dates and places of the children), first settling in Glenn then Colusa Counties, and finally in Santa Barbara County, specifically in Lompoc and Santa Maria. Edmund Fields died in Lompoc in 1903 and his wife Lucy Ann Brooks died in Betteravia (near Santa Maria) in 1918. If anyone is interested, I have a copy of a biographical sketch on Ezra Grant Fields, including info on his father, Edmund Fields, that is included in a history of Santa Barbara County, California. I can post to the list if interested.
