I'm hoping to find someone with info on my FIELDS family; they apparently lived in Phila on Vincent 'above Green' but had a grocery store on Stevens? street in Camden. JOHN and MARAGARET PRICE(born NJ 1837)were the parents, my Greatgrandpop WILLIAM (b.1873) and his older brother THEOPLUS C (b.1865 & named after a family friend) their surviving children. John had a brother THOMAS who was in the army in 1869 and I have a letter from him referring to the 'boys at the stationhouse' which may mean he was a fireman before entering the service. According to JOHN's death certif (1910 Atlantic City) his father was THOMAS from England, his mother, MARY also English born. I lose track of Theo after abt 1906.William had a brief marriage to a EMMA TAYLOR from ENGLAND (1894-abt 1904)in Camden. John, Maggie, Wm and his second wife, Margaret WHITAKER (b.Shenadoah, PA) all finish their lives in Atlantic City and are buried in Pleasantville. I have a photo of Wm as a boy, preteen I'm guessing, posing with his father in front of (their?) store and on the back it says Stevens Street.Probably early 1880's. Hi John, Thanks for writing me. Sorry, but I don't see a connection. My FIELDS descended from William Russell FIELDS the son (9th child) of Crabtree FIELDS in Russell County, Virginia. My Fields line went to Lawrence County, Ohio and from there to Springfield, Missouri. My husband's grandmother, Elizabeth (Lizzie) FIELDS, married Orin WARD and they moved to Brookings, South Dakota. Lizzie had a twin sister, named Emma. Following is more about my FIELDS and WARDS. Good luck with your research, Mary Kay COLE WARD, of Richmond, VA Elizabeth FIELDS parents, William "Russell" FIELDS born abt. 1842 in Wisconsin and Mary Delawder born abt 1847 in Ironton, Ohio had married 18 Apr 1866 in Lawrence Co, Ohio. Here they are on the 1880 census. Census 1880, Union Twp, Lawrence Co, Ohio (copied by MK) William R. At that time their daughter, Elizabeth (my husband's grandmother) was about 15 years old. 1880 Lawrence County, Ohio census William Russell FIELDS family was in Ironton City, Lawrence Co., Ohio --which would have been 6 years before "Russell" moved the family to Springfield, Missouri. Four years after moving to Missouri, when she was about 19 years old, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Fields, born 24 Oct 1871 in Ironton, Lawrence Co.,Ohio, had met Orin (aka Ora) WARD who was born 1872 in Eau Claire, Wis. They married in Springfield, Greene Co, Missouri, on 25 October 1890. Their first three children were born in Missouri (probably in Springfield) They were Donald Duane Ward b. abt 1891, Walter Ward b. abt. 1894 and James "Earl" Ward b. about 1897. Elizabeth FIELDS and Orin with their children moved from Missouri to the Brookings, South Dakota area in the early 1900's. But her father, "Russell" and mother Mary FIELDS and at least 3 of Elizabeth's siblings (2 sisters and a brother) remained in Springfield, Missouri and I haven't been able to find out anything more about them. When Elizabeth "Lizzie" FIELDS WARD died 13 Dec 1928 in Brookings, South Dakota, at age 57, her obituary listed among the family surviving her --in Springfield, Missouri two sisters and one brother. Her mother, Mary DELAWDER FIELDS died in Springfield and probably her father, Wm "Russell" FIELDS did too. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I have felt uneasy about my Mary Weatherlys and decided to admit it. I thought I had 2 but found I have 3 and it is time to sort it out. Just in case someone has joined the list since I posted my query, here it is again: My gg-grandmother was Charity FIELDS. Here is what I know about her: In the one census I found her (already married with children), it only said "from TN". She is buried in Smyrna Cemetery near Downsville LA, (this info from an e-mail I received and from 1980 issue of Northeastern Louisiana Genealogical Society Quarterly, which had a list of all who were buried in Smyrna Cem). Her gravestone apparently only reads "Charity Fields Ellis - Age 87". A copy of a lawsuit gotten from Farmerville LA Clerk of Court, dated Aug 1891, states that Charity ". . is very old and infirm, she was seventy nine years old last January", meaning she was born in 1812 and from gravestone saying died at 87, she died in 1900 or 1901 (in the computer program, a death date of 1901 makes her 88 years at death, so I put in 1900. She married my gg-grandfather, Benjamin C. ELLIS on an unknown date. They had 6 children: Joseph Graves (my g-grandfather) Martha A. John E. George H. James C. Phillie H. E. (The last two I only found out about with the list of those buried in Smyrna). I have no idea how to start looking for someone whose only origins are "from TN"!! Does anyone have a Charity in their database??? Thanks Francesca Sutton Austin TX

Dear Cousin's: In response to Thomas Fields' request for info. Here is something I copied years ago from the State Historical Society in Oklahoma City. I don't remember what I copied it from but here is my copy. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Geneology of the FIELD family _________________________ _____________________ Preface: I am greatly indebted to a volume written by Rodney Burt Field, of Guilfore, Vermont, containing a history of the descendants of Zachariah Field, who came to the Connecticut Valley in 1639. It is a large 12 mo. volume, written in a fine, plain hand, Mr. Robert Field's own handwriting- -and is deposited with the Deerfield Historical Society of Deerfield, Mass. The book is never to be removed, and permission of the president or secretary must be obtained before it can be copied from. Rodney Burt Field was the son of Elihu Field, Jr - ------------------------------------- The Field family descended from Hubertus de la Field, who went to England with William the Conquerer in the year 1016, from near Colmar, in Alsace, on the German border of France. He was of the family of Count de la Field, who traces back to the darkest period of the Middle Ages- -about the Sixth Century. Hubertus recieved large grants of land from William the Conquerer and settled near Halifax, England, where the family became numerous, and had many learned and noted men. When England and France became engaged in war, they dropped the French prefix and wrote the name Field. Sir John Field, the astronomer, was born at Ardsley, England in 1525. Zechariah, a grandson of Sir John, settled in Connecticut in 1639, and Col. David Field was the sixth generation in descent from him. Col. David Field, born in Hartford, Mass., January 4th, 1712 was a member of the first Massachusetts Congress that met in Concord in 1774, also in the Congress that met in Cambridge, Mass. in 1775; was also a member of the Mass. Council of Safety. Was Commisary General under General Stark at the Battle of Bennington August 16, 1777, and was in command of the regiment for a time. The Mass. State Revolutionary Records say: was chosen Colonal of the 5th Hampshire Co. Regiment of Mass. Militia January 31 1776: was commissioned Feb. 8, 1776, registered Feb. 14, 1776. In his resignation, Colonel Field. stated that he had served to the best of his ability, but he was now, owing to his old age, unable to longer fulfill the duties of his offices as he should like to, and therefore tendered his resignation, which was accepted. Major Elihu Field, son of David and Thankful (Taylor) Field, was born in Deerfield, Mass. Oct. 16, 1753 and married Dec. 29, 1774 to Hepzibah, daughter of Captain Thomas Dickson. He was interested, with his father in business and real estate, which from depreciation and losses during the Revolutionary War left him poor and without means at its close. After settling up his affairs as well as he could he removed in March, 1878 to Guilford, Vermont, and settled near the center of the town. In 1791 he built a house and set out maple trees, the house is still standing and some of the trees. On this purchase stood the Tory Tavern, kept by Hezekiah Stowell, who being a New Yorker, so-called, went with the others to Bainbridge, New York, on land appropriated by the State of New York for it's adherence on the settlement of the difficulties between that state and Vermont in 1791. He, Elihu, was a soldier for the Revolution on what was called the Alarm, which was to give notice of the approach of the enemy, and to look for the Tories. He was at the Battle of Bennington, August 1777, assisting his father, who was Commissary General under General Stark, He was a prominent man in Guilford, holding various town offices. A Major of the first organized Militia of Vermont, a Justice of the Peace for twenty years: United States Deputy Marshall for the taking of the census in 1810: United States Assessor on Internal Revenue at the time of his death. He was a firm and liberal supporter of religion, but favored the Church of England. He was often called upon to settle disputes between persons in religious matters, He was a man who was not desirous of great riches, but was satisfied with his situation in life, and was charitable to all in need, In 1803 he sold at the center of town and removed to the east part of town, where he died August 23 1814, Field, Elihu Private, Captain Amasa Sheldon's Company, Col. Elisha Porter's Regiment: enlisted July 10, 1777: service in Northern Department. Hepzibah Dickson Field, was the daughter of Captain and Prudence (Smith) Dickson, of Deerfield, Mass. She was born May 10, 1753, died Mar. 30, 1843, She was a woman of good abilities and was conversant of the early history of the country; with the early Indian Wars and most of the events of the Revolution: and was acquainted with many of the noted persons, and could give in detail many of the most interesting events. She took great interest in the prosperity of the country. She could adapt herself to any society, old or young and had the respect of all who knew her. Another to Brian Boru, King of Ireland in 1001. Not a dozen families in Europe can prove a higher antiquity or more distinguishing connections, from Rosamond, daughter of William Field, who died about 1617, Married Godfrey Kay, whose family claimed descent from Sir Kay, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table. Dr. Richard Field was Chaplain to King James and Queen Elizabeth. In 1753, John Field of London married Ann, daughter of Thomas Cromwell, who was a grandson of Oliver Cromwell. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Sharing info --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 09:45:33 EDT Subject: [DENTON-L] Fw: WWI Draft Cards Message-ID: <[email protected]> Forwarded From Another List: M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserveall the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>. And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.

Looking for FIELDS who heads the following family group: <umknown> FIELDS (maybe an older Moses; maybe John Fields of Laurens Co., SC) m. Elizabeth Ann MARTIN. 1. Moses (5 Mar 1784, SC - 11 Nov 1848, Jefferson Co., AL); m. 9 Oct 1811, Madison Co., Miss.Terr. (later AL), Jane SHARP 2. Samuel (1786, SC - 26 Apr 1860, Jefferson Co., AL; m. 22 Sep. 1813, Madison Co., Miss.Terr. (later AL) 3. Isaac (abt.1788); m. Anna ----, Elizabeth Rancy 4. Mary Ann (abt. 1790 - ?); m. 12 Sep 1811, Madison Co., Miss.Terr. (later AL) 5. Anna (aby 1794 - ?); m. 20 Jul 1813, Madison Co., Miss.Terr. (later AL) 6. Letitia ("Lettie") (1797/8, SC - aft. 1880, Yantis, Wood Co.,TX); m. abt. 1820, AL, Edward Gray Sharp; in 1829, he sold his wife's share of Elizabeth Ann Field's estate to Moses Fields in Jefferson Co., AL; later lived in Marion and Fayette Cos., AL; then in Attala Co., MS and finally in Wood Co., TX. [This is my line.] Jane and Edward Gray Sharp appear to be siblings and children of John SHARP of 1790 and 1800 Abbeville Co., SC censuses (almost certainly son of Henry, son of Edward SHARP of Lancaster Co., PA.) John SHARP appears to have came to Madison Co., Miss.Terr. (became AL later) between 1800 and 1810. Our FIELDS and SHARPS may have met for the first time after both moved to Miss.Terr. Although the Fields parents listed above appear to have lived in SC when their children were born, they have not been located in Abbeville Co. records. The father may be the John Fields of Laurens Co., SC - John's 1790 and 1800 census shows fairly good matches with the above FIELDS children, but I haven't been able to find out more about this John. There is also at least one John Fields in Pendle- ton Co., SC who needs further investigation. (early Pendleton, Abbeville, Laurens, and Greenville Cos., SC join at a common point.) Nathaniel and Mary Fields of Rockingham Co., NC had son, Obidiah Fields, who lived in Abbeville Co., SC 1790 and 1800 (apparently near John Sharp). There is an indirect and distant intermarriage chain between Obidiah and our Fields, but no evidnece of a direct family relation. One source placed Moses b. 1784 as a son of an older Moses Fields who had Cherokee connections in NC and then came to Miss.Terr. I've been unable to get any details on this possible connection. If any one has any clues to my puzzle or suggested search scenarios, I'd love to hear from you. Regards, Theron Smith, Ft. Worth, TX.

Cause of death as listed in the cemetery records was consumption, a rather common listed cause of death in those days. None of the three children knew their mother and Joseph never remarried. The children were raised by a housekeeper named Mrs. Bennett. Joseph Field, Jr. b. Dec. 29, 1870, Middletown, New Jersey. m. Sorry, I omitted the state. That is Fries or Baywood, Virginia area. Patience
I would like any information about Waneta Davis or Waneta Fields living between 1900 and 1912 in the Fries or Baywood area. Patience
I am still researching for the birthdate/place of my Ebenezer FIELD(S) who was born circa 1770-76 and the names of his parents and siblings. He is first found in 1797 in Bourbon Co., KY on the Tax List. He marries Sararah Roxanne Burden on 5-10-1799 in Bourbon Co., KY. Does anyyone have information as to the migration routes generally used when KY was settled. I know that KY was formed from VA but does that mean that the migration of people came out of VA? Could the migration routes been from elsewhere? The libraries I use have very little to offer in the way of migration routes. All information appreciated.
