In Cancelled land books this information found Patrick CARMODY replace a John CARMODY between 1853 Further information shows land passing to Cornelius Carmody between 1862-1891 then to Kate CARMODY 1903-1916 This is all in Co. Kerry Barony of Trughanacy ( looks like), parish of Ballincusland, Electrol Dist of Kilmurry ( no information after that) What I am trying to find is families of the land holders or whoever leased the land, named CARMODY. To make a match to a Denis CARMODY, and his son John. How do I investigate further as to the familes, (wives and childrens names) that owned the land? Is there a 1841 thru 1861 census that I could check for the name in Castleisland parish, and in Ballincuslane. Would all the family, wife and children be shown on the census? Would these be on a fisch I could check thru the FHC? I am hoping for possible answers to this puzzle before my trip to Ireland in Sep't. I'd like to get as much together as possible or at least know where to look when I get there for further information. A most elusive family name -since it is commonly found in Clare. BUT this family I am searching ( my Gfather) supposedly in Cork in 1865 for his birth. This info accordding to Gfathers Army pension papers and all I have to go on. I cannot ask any family members they are all dead-have been since 1926, at least the only onses who would have the answers. This is ALL the documentation I have been able to find going back this far. Finally found my Gmother after 34 years-still working on Grandpa. Gfather, John Carmody son of (GGfathr ), Denis CARMODY & Mary McEvoy supposedly born in Liscarroll, however checking parish church there says no information and no one with that name. Suggestions please I am running out of time. Thank you Pat mystarz@mindspring.com

Ellen: Why are all the census records only fragments? Did no one collect and preserve them? This must make Irish research nigh on impossible!! Eileen Herkes > Irish Census fragments > 1821 Census Fragments > This census, took place on May 28th 1821. > Almost all of the original returns were destroyed in 1922, with only a > Few volumes surviving for parts of Counties Cavan, Fermanagh, Galway, > Meath > And Offaly (King's County).
Eileen, due to the violent and turbulent history of Ireland, many returns were destroyed. There were complete censuses taken, but many of them, like the 1821 returns were destroyed at the Four Courts explosion in 1922. So, just fragments remain for parts of Cavan, Galway, Kings County and Meath. The 1831 census returns too were destroyed in that June of 1922. I think there are some returns left for Londerry from that one. Of the 1841 census, you can access some parts of the Killeshandra Parish return. The 1861 and 1871 returns were wantonly destroyed by government order. The Census returns were destroyed for 1881 and 1891 also by government order due to the lack of paper shortages during WWI. Realizing the need to replace any kind of record the GRO released the 1901 and 1911 returns. The next census was conducted in 1926, the first one taken for the Irish Free State after WWI.......but the privacy act is in force and those records won't be released until 2026. ----- Original Message ----- From: Eileen@j51.com <eileen@j51.com> To: <FIANNA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2000 9:12 AM Subject: Re: [FIANNA-L] Where do I go from here? > Ellen: > > Why are all the census records only fragments? Ellen: Many thanks for taking the time to explain. Eileen > Eileen, due to the violent and turbulent history of Ireland, many returns > were destroyed. There were complete censuses taken, but many of them, like > the 1821 returns were destroyed at the Four Courts explosion in 1922. So,
You had a check done of church records, & they said no family of that name. Is it possible, that the family was there, but belonged to some other church, or none ? If the one you checked was RC, maybe they were C of Irl., Huguenot or ???
