> I have just received the soundex for passenger arrivals to NY from 1902 and > after. The problem is I can't decipher. I get cards like: > Devine, Elizabeth 17 f 19 64 8918 > Devine, Elizabeth 16 f 27 33 8880 > Christina, The above sequence is interpreted: Surname, first name, age, sex, line, page, volume 1) Volume 8918 of the passenger lists is the 2nd of 2 volumes found on roll #3961; beginning date of arrivals is Nov. 7, 1926. 2) Volume 8880 of the passenger lists is the second of two films found on roll 3941; beginning arrival date is Oct. 4, 1926. Go to the 2nd volume on each film, then look for your page number, which can be tricky, as there are often several numbers on each page. Then go down to the correct line. I understand that staff at the NARA in Pittsfield recommend that if it is too difficult to deal with the page number, then go through the volume looking only at the line in question on each page. If you are getting film through an LDS Family History Center, the film numbers will not correspond to what I have given you, which is the NARA film number. However, just look for the volume # in the LDS catalog (microfiche or computer), and you will see the LDS film number. Hope this helps. Margaret J. -- E-mail: [email protected] OR [email protected]
