    1. Is advertising a list on another list spam?

    3. Dear Fennidi, I am pasting a letter to the bottom of this msg that was posted by Diana (Diana I hope you are still lurking here). She didn't cross post here so I am going to! Frankly I think the allegations Diana is countering here are ridiculous. When I join lists or participate in ngs I always made it a point of reading the FAQ (IMHO more ppl should do this). Well enough of this since it certainly doesn't apply to to any of the Fennidi. AFAIK it is not a violation of "netiquette". I hope not since I think there is a possibility that I might have been guilty of violating thios rule if there is such a rule. This is not what I personally would define as Spam. Actually I think both chirho and I and maybe some of the rest of you have "advertised" either VU classes or Fianna on other lists. Besides how do those who are victims of "list addiction" find more lists? :) Actually one reason I participate in lists is to discover new URLs, lists, or interesting events like the Monday Irish group meeting on IIGS etc.!! What do you all think about this? Rigfennid III aka possum Here is Diana's letter. The question was raised (by a forward of a partial message) as to why "I" advertise on other lists and why I don't allow it on my own list. I'm really certain that I 'advertise', but will address the question anywway. Actually, we DO allow advertisement of other lists, classes, and events on the IrelandGenWeb List. I don't believe that all the expertise is in one place and that if it can be found elsewhere, I see no reason why someone shouldn't be referenced to TheShipsList, TIARA, FIANNA-L, the IRELAND-L list or any other list if there is someone there that can help them. In fact, we make a regular practice of referring people to TheShipsList where many people have lists of immigration and passenger lists. Also, any advertisement concerning classes, lists, genealogical supply houses are also welcome as long as they relate to genealogy. Email Surplus houses do NOT! :) They must be in good taste, no lengthy attachments and should be links only. If the person is not subscribed to the list, it will come to my box. (This avoids spammers and flamrs irritating anyone besides me!) If I feel an advertisement is worthwhile to others to see it, I will forward it to the list. Any spamming and flaming is not allowed and repeated offenders will be added to the reject list. As to signature lines - I don't believe that single or even two or three liner signature lines are in violation of an advertisement ban. Many people have useful home page links and I would hate to miss some of them. If you don't want to read them, simply hit the delete key. I know that other list owners have their own rules and restrictions. Rootsweb genealogical lists are not to be used for commercial advertisements. However, if they relate to genealogy, I personally make the exception. If anyone wants to submit an advertisement for an event, you'll welcome to forward it.
