I'll listen to any suggestions ... Ireland is a 'closed shop' for information on my ancestors! And Australia isn't much better! Kerin Patrick Thomas b County Clare abt 1845 emigrated to Australia abt 1865. Worked, married near Clare South Australia then moved to Broken Hill NSW where he died 1897 in an accident involving a horse. Mary Kerin ( very likely his sister) b abt 1847 m 1867 Kapunda South Australia to Patrick O'Dea Elizabeth ( Eliza / Lisa ) Kerin (sister to Patrick ) b abt 1851 County Clare arrived Australia abt 1865 married James Fitzgerald 1872 at Burra South Australia moved to Broken Hill NSW d 1930 Broken Hill Their Parents are recorded on Marriage & Death certificates as Michael Kerin & Mary Ann / Marian / Marion MAGAN What I cannot find 1. Any record of their births, baptism, location 2. Any record of their parents 3. Any record of their emigration ... ships lists ... arrivals etc. What I know 1. Patrick was illiterate 2. I don't think his family held any property 3. He was an Agricultural Labourer in Australia; involved with horses it seems 4. Elizabeth was about 14 when she arrived in Australia and therefore would have been accompanied by family or 'trusted adults'. 5. If the naming tradition applies there must have been other children in the family Ray Niemann
Trent, Civil Registration of Birth, Catholic marriages, and deaths did not begin until 1964. Your only chance is to find the parish church and read any available sacramental registers. However, because of the redundancy of names, it is imperative that you know both the parents' names to distinguish the child from others of the same name. The Family History Library Catalog does not have church records. Hi Ray Thank you for your email with Kerin information. I am not sure if my Ellen Kerin had any brothers or sisters. I know from census records in Winterbourne Gloucestshire she was born in Clare. Can't be too many Kerins about? I am going to Ireland next month and will be hunting about for firstly a marriage record for John and Ellen Thyne, at least then I will have a fathers name. I have been hunting for years now for that infromation but perhaps I am getting closer. I will keep your family in mind when we are in Clare. Are you related to any O'Dea families that are in New Zealand? I believe there are some who attend the Irish Interest Group in Auckland? I will add your information to my collection and let you know if I can find anything that might look hopeful. I am not sure what I wrote on rootsweb now, will have a look later in the day and get back to you. Thanks again for your email, and I shall be in touch.
