Marcy, Since Jamaica was a British colony at the time, my assumption is that the ship really sailed from Liverpool or some other British port, stopped in Ireland en route, and then took passangers or cargo to Jamaica--and possibly southern US ports--before returning via NYC. Your ship's manifest might mention the port the ship sailed from, and possibly whether some passengers were going to Jamaica. Hope this helps.
