I applaud your efforts to try and get a commemorative stamp as described below. If you want to read the history of the attempts to get a fellow Irishman a stamp of his own only to be rebuffed for almost 5 years by the Postmaster General, go the Audie L. Murphy web site at: www.sagelink.net/audiemurphy Letters describing these efforts can be found at www.sagelink.net/audiemurphy/letters.htm Suffice it to say it is scandalous. It is so bad that the Postmaster General has stopped answering inquiries to him as to why there has been no Audie Murphy stamp or to petitions for the issuing of one. He has simply ignored them. This web site is loaded with names and addresses and how-to hints on sending petitions for a stamp. You can even add your name to the almost 17,000 people who have signed petitions to get this stamp issued (to no effect to date, I might add). Audie Murphy would have been 75 in 1999 and that's when they want this stamp issued. Petitions have even been sent to West Point for the cadets to sign. Anyway, this might be a good site to check out to get ideas on how to proceed to try and get a stamp issued. It would also allow those Irish who are proud of one of their own, to sign the petition themselves if you believe that Audie Murphy deserves a stamp. Remember, under the current "reign" of this postmaster general, we've had Bugs Bunny on a stamp, and Elvis (drug abuser), and Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin, Jimmie Hendricks, and Billy Holladay (all of whom died as the direct result of drug overdoses). This seems to say a lot for the priorities of this postmaster.
