    3. The 654 ton Marquis Cornwallis set sail from Cork to New South Wales in 1795 and carried 244 Irish men and women prisoners. There was a revolt on the ship prompted by intolerable conditions suffered by the passengers who were chained below decks and frequently fell victim to disease. Captain Michael Hogan who was born in Co. Clare in 1766 was the ship's captain and quelled the mutiny. Hogan made his fortune as a slave trader and merchant and the ship's log reveals the aftermath of the mutiny. Hogan settled in New York in 1804 and bought a mansion on the Hudson River. He went on to found the town of Hogansburg in northern New York State and later became the first US Consul to Chile. The log is to be auctioned in London and is expected to realise as much as £150k.
