Sometimes we all need a look into the future! Enjoy. Chirho. From another list: From: Duane & Gayle Reynolds <<duaner@flash.net> Subject: The Borg vs. Microsoft <<Picard> "Mr. LaForge, have you had any success with your attempts at finding a weakness in the Borg? And Mr. Data, have you been able to access their command pathways?" <<Geordi> "Yes, Captain. In fact, we found the answer by searching through our archives on late Twentieth-century computing technology." Geordi presses a key, and a logo appears.> Riker looks puzzled.> "What the hell is 'Microsoft'?" <<Data> "Allow me to explain. We will send this program, for some reason called 'Windows', through the Borg command pathways. Once inside their root command unit, it will begin consuming system resources at an unstoppable rate." <<Picard> "But the Borg have the ability to adapt. Won't they alter their processing systems to increase their storage capacity?" <<Data> "Yes, Captain. But when 'Windows' detects this, it creates a new version of itself known as an 'upgrade'. The use of resources increases exponentially with each iteration. The Borg will not be able to adapt quickly enough. Eventually all of their processing ability will be taken over and none will be available for their normal operational functions." <<Picard> "Excellent work. This is even better than that 'unsolvable geometric shape' idea." ... 15 Minutes Later ... <<Data> "Captain, We have successfully installed the 'Windows' in the command unit and, as expected, it immediately consumed 85% of all resources. We however have not received any confirmation of the expected 'upgrade'." <<Geordi> "Our scanners have picked up an increase in Borg storage and CPU capacity to compensate, but we still have no indication of an 'upgrade' to compensate for their increase." <<Picard> "Data, scan the history banks again and determine if their is something we have missed." <<Data> "Sir, I believe their is a reason for the failure in the 'upgrade'. Apparently the Borg have circumvented that part of the plan by not sending in their registration cards. <<Riker> "Captain we have no choice. Requesting permission to begin emergency escape sequence 3F . . ." <<Geordi, excited> "Wait, Captain I just detected their CPU capacity has suddenly dropped to 0% !" <<Picard> "Data, what do the scanners show?" <<Data> "Apparently the Borg have found the internal ' Windows' module named 'Solitaire' and it has used up all the CPU capacity." <<Picard> "Lets wait and see how long this 'solitaire' can reduce their functionality." ... Two Hours Pass ... <<Riker> "Geordi, what's the status on the Borg?" <<Geordi> "As expected the Borg are attempting to re-engineer to compensate for increased CPU and storage demands, but each time they successfully increase resources I have setup our closest deep space monitor beacon to transmit more 'windows' modules from something called the 'Microsoft fun-pack'. <<Picard> "How much time will that buy us ?" <<Data> "Current Borg solution rates allow me to predicate an interest time span of 6 more hours." <<Geordi> "Captain, another vessel has entered our sector." <<Picard> "Identify." <<Data> "It appears to have markings very similar to the 'Microsoft' logo" <<On audio> "THIS IS ADMIRAL BILL GATES OF THE MICROSOFT FLAGSHIP MONOPOLY. WE HAVE POSITIVE CONFIRMATION OF UNREGISTERED SOFTWARE IN THIS SECTOR. SURRENDER ALL ASSETS AND WE CAN AVOID ANY TROUBLE. YOU HAVE 10 SECONDS" <<Data> "The alien ship has just opened its forward hatches and released thousands of humanoid shaped objects." <<Picard> "Magnify forward viewer on the alien craft" <<Riker> "Good God captain! Those are humans floating straight toward the Borg ship with no life support suits ! How can they survive the tortures of deep space ?!" <<Data> "I don't believe that those are humans sir, if you will look closer I believe you will see that they are carrying something recognized by twenty-first century man as doe skin leather briefcases, and wearing Armani suits" <<Riker and Picard together, horrified> "Lawyers !!" <<Geordi> "It can't be. All the Lawyers were rounded up and sent hurtling into the sun in 2017 during the Great Awakening." <<Data> "True, but apparently some must have survived & multiplied." <<Riker> "They have surrounded the Borg ship and are covering it with all types of papers." <<Data> "I believe that is known in ancient vernacular as 'red tape' it often proves fatal." <<Riker> "They're tearing the Borg to pieces !" <<Picard> "Turn off the monitors. I can't stand to watch, not even the Borg deserve that." Yes, Thank you to all who have been active in the Fianna (study Group) in the past. Hopefully the new group will do as well as the old. The mail list is running smoothly, and our needs as a group are changing. All of you newbies should appreciate all of the work of the original members, they (we) all deserve a big hand. Hopefully we will always stay a group of friends, even when we have our differences. I think you are all neat folks. LCC you are great as is Chirho and Janet. At this point there are no candidates willing to run for election as the new "Rig". Our one candidate has withdrawn. I suggest that if needed in the future that we will reopen the election at the request of five or more members. This should end the Election topic. Dear List, Lots of new stuff loaded into the "tea shop' pages... Still looking for a name....Send your suggestions along with your profile/surname..or just send a suggestion! http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/fianna/fiandex.html Now the funny! You know you're an E-mail Junkie if: 1. You wake up at 3 a.m. to go to the bathroom and stop to check your e-mail on the way back to bed. 2. You get a tatoo that reads "This body best viewed with Netscape Navigator 1.1 or higher." 3. You name your children Eudora, Mozillia and Dotcom. 4. You turn off your modem and get this awful empty feeling, like you just pulled the plug on a loved one. 5. You spend half of the plane trip with your laptop on your lap...and your child in the overhead compartment. 6. You decide to stay in college for an additional year or two, just for the free Internet access. 7. You laugh at people with 9600-baud modems. 8. You start using smileys in your snail mail. 9. Your hard drive crashes. You haven't logged in for two hours. You start to twitch. You pick up the phone and manually dial your ISP's access number. You try to hum to communicate with the modem....And you succeed. 10. You find yourself typing "com" after every period when using a word processor.com 11. You refer to going to the bathroom as downloading. 12. You start introducing yourself as "JohnDoe at AOL dot com." 13. All of your friends have an @ in their names. 14. Your cat has its own home page. 15. You can't call your mother...she doesn't have a modem. 16. You check your mail. It says "no new messages." So you check it again. 17. Your phone bill comes to your doorstep in a box. 18. You don't know what sex three of your closest friends are, because they have neutral nicknames and you never bothered to ask. 19. You move into a new house and decide to Netscape before you landscape. 20. You tell the cab driver you live at "http://1000.edison.garden/house/brick.html" 21. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. Dear Kay (and anyone else) Once again sorry to write to the list rather than Kay. However, in case anyone has tried the Donegal link I sent in yesterday, I have no idea what happened here since I "thought" I cut and pasted it right from the site which prevents mistakes. I see the odd mention of books of interest about Irish subjects. I have a couple but there scope is mainly restricted to the Inishowen Peninsula area of Co. Donegal. Likely only available through Inter-library loan. "Inishowan, its History, Traditions an Antiquities" by Maghtochair (1830-1898) non-de-plume for Michael Harkin. first published in 1867, reprint in 1985 by Peggy Harkin Simpson, I got mine in Carndonagh, at "The Bookshop" for L8.50. (reprint) "Romantic Inishowen" by Harry Percinal Swan in 1947 Published by Hodges Figgis & Co, Dawson St. Dublin. History, Mythology, Folklore, Legend, Industry, Poetry. Got this one at a Library sale table for 10 cents. Borrowed another one of his through ILL. "That Audacious Traitor" by Brian Bonner (1985) 3rd book of a trilogy dealing with the Inishowen Peninsula up to 1608. This volume dealing with the O'Donnell, O'Doherty and related Clanns from 1333-1608 in their dealing with each other and the British. Very O'Dohartaigh oriented but lots of insight into the inter-clann rivalry and how the the British used them and visa-versa. Haven't read the first two, yet. I belong to the Donegal Historical Society and enjoy their annual journal. Not too Genealogically oriented, but much interesting documentation. Also belong to the O'Dochartaigh Clann Research Assn., located at Inche Island, Co. Donegal and have my line back to 1480. This makes 16 generations to my grand children. As you can see, I'm interested in the area as my anscestors came from the Townland of Labadish to New Brunswick, Canada in 1819. I located the descendants of my G G G G Grandfather, (a son by his second marraige). They are farming (cattle and sheep)on the same land. Labadish is about 9 miles West of Derry, and about a mile South of Manor Cunningham. My ancestor is from the first wife. So there you are, for what it is worth, if anyone is interested in that part of Ireland. Hi guys, About a month or so ago someone on Genuki was looking for maps which showed the counties of Ireland. I looked on the Fianna site and found a link to a large beautiful map (the map page is still my favorite JC), but the individual counties were rather difficult to discern. I also knew that all Al Beagan had a large simple outline map of the Irish counties on his web page so I sent both URLs into Genuki. However, I decided that I wanted a map, preferably in color, to put in my Irish notebook. Both these maps are very large, but I probably could have reduced them if I was willing to play around with them. I decided not to bother. (This is probably the reason that as computers have become easier to operate my knowledge of them has become less and less. I am really an extremly lazy computer user anymore!!) Anyway I searched the web via Yahoo, Alta Vista etc. and really didn't find what I wanted. At the end of July my family got together to celebrate my sister's birthday as well as have a pre 50th anniversary celebration for my folks. (Well that is a pretty rapid shift in subject isn't it? Although I think Jim O'Neill's suggestion about identifying the sugject is a good one, and I do try to identify the subject of my letters sometimes I notice that I have meandered around so that my letters never really get to the subject in the title. :) :)) Be patient I am getting to the maps (although perhaps I should have titled this letter An Gorta Mor or Paddy's Lament or something). My brother was reading The Easter Rebellion so tried to get him to loan me the book, but he refused and took the book back to Virginia with him (The Rat!!!) Then I remembered that another more generous brother had received an Irish book from another brother for Christmas one year. If this is getting confusing I rarely post my brothers names since like my surnames they are also "popular" (VBG) Pat (John Patrick), Michael Kevin (Mike).......Well you get the picture (there are five of them) ROTFL The book was Paddy's Lament (which was actually more useful for research purposes since my people came over long before the Easter Rebellion and were in fact Famine immigrants). I stayed up all night reading about these poor immigrants. I recommend the book HIGHLY although I must admit it is not a real "upper". OK O'Possum get to the point. I resolved to finally look at all the URLs in my famine folder. When we were building the Fianna page I kept sending them to Laura (Clouldy) our Irish History group leader, but the truth is I could barely stand to look at them myself! When investigating An Gorta Mor I found a link to an entire page of maps. http://www.wisc.edu/history/famine/map.html There are lots of maps here. The second map is the beautiful full color one which is linked to on the Fianna Page. However, the first map was just what I was looking for. I printed it out on the ink jet to carry in my travelling notebook BTW the above URL is to the map page: The main page of An Gorta Mor is: http://www.wisc.edu/history/famine/ Warning it includes a large and slow loading graphic. Second warning the graphic is a picture of a starving Irish family. Paddy's Lament by Thomas Gallager BTW is an excellent background source on famine immigration. Well this letter is getting longer and longer and I really had better sign off, however, I did find one new address to add to my famine folder. http://www.nbpub.nb.ca/IRISH/INDEX.HTM There are a lot of interesting articles here. I think our Canadian list members will find this address of particular interest. Some information that I found of special interest is the one about the folk park in Northern Ireland which appparently has a database of 13000 genealogical documents housed in its computer system. The park's owner apparently eventually hopes to get his information on the web. Check it out!!! BBFN (finally) Gail
All, If the mailing list for INET-GENSOC-L is still listed on this site It is NOT a genealogy mailing list. It is a list for IIGS matters. I have emailed them about this, but I think the list is STILL there. Anyone who subscribes to this list will be sorely dissapointed if they think there is any genealogy being done through this mailing list :-) *peace* jeanne On Fri, 22 Aug 1997, Laura Cowan Cooper wrote: > You might want to bookmark the Genealogy Resources on the Internet file at > http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/internet.html (the main page) and, if you > are interested in the over 1,600 genealogy mailing lists, also bookmark the > Mailing List section of the file at > http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html. <snip>
I have not checked to see if this is one of our current URLs, but it just came over the private Wigton Walker List that I am part of and I thought that it looked good at a quick look around. <snip>You might be interested in the following web sites, created and maintained by John Fuller and Christine Gaunt.
