    3. Jolene, You write: This url is no longer correct. The new url for the Ireland GenWeb is <http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5341/ Diana moved this site from dsenter. I cannot make the new URL work! (It takes me to the geocities main page with a message that the site isn't there!) However, the dsenter one appears to be still up although I can't see that it is being updated. Can you tell us what is going on? Gail Possum Hill Farm

    2. Bruce Roorda
    3. Hi guys, I was cleaning up my old Genuki files and found this: The following is a real note sent from a census taker in the 1800's to the government which may explain why a lot of us have variations in the spelling of names: Centsus Rekurds - "I am a cencus taker for the city of Bufflow. Our city has groan very fast in resent years and now, in 1865, it has becum a hard and time consooming job to count all the peephill. Thare is not meny that can do this werk, as it is necesarie to have a ejucashun, which a lot of pursons still do not have. Another atribeart needed for this job is good speling, for meny of the peephill to be caounted can hardle speek inglish, let alone spel there name." Gail in MO O'Possum the Lost

    2. The September issue of The Signal is out! The latest edition of the USIGS newslett er names the Hood County Genealogical Society site as the third winner of the prestigious Siggy award, citing its many searchable online data bases as "outstanding" and of immeasurable help to researchers whose family stems from that corner of Texas. And it tells how that site came to include papers salvaged from the city dump!!! To see how helpful a web page can be, browse on over to http://www.hcnews.come/~ancestor/ And note Siggy the Frog happioly ensconced onpage to denote its September honor!1 To learn more about USIGS and the men and women who are building it, read the Signal at http://www.usigs.org/ And P.S. 1. IIGS IRC meeting
    2. Bruce Roorda
    3. Hi guys, I attended the Irish genealogy chat at IIGS this afternoon. It was really terrific for a first meeting. Everyone seemed to think it should become a regular event. The meeting was logged and will be posted to the IIGS site. The URL for the IRC page is: http://www.iigs.org/irc/index.htm.en Norma: Did you make it to the meeting? I didn't catch everyone's names. You should check out the above URL to find out how to attend meetings. (However as I said a log will be posted so you can find out what went on). Do you have IRC software? There are directions for downloading software on the IRC page above. Also I have a lot of great genealogy IRC bookmarks. If you need any help please write to the list and someone will try to help you. If nothing else I will be available, but there are several ppl on the list who are more expert at IRC than I am. I am sorry that I didn't see your letter. I checked out the Fianna list before I headed for the meeting and I must just have missed your msg!! Gail in MO (oppossum or ibpossum)

    1. Gaelic phrases
    2. Bruce Roorda
    3. The following appeared on the Genire list today: Here's a few for those who are interested. Go n-eiri leat :Good luck to you (That things will rise to you) (fada -accent on the e and i of eiri): Goh (short 'o' not as in go) n-iri leath: Go n-eiri an t-adh leat: The best of luck to you (That luck will rise to you) (fada's as above and also on the 'a' of t-adh): Goh n-iri an tah leath Go n-eiri an bothar leat: Have a good trip (That the road may rise to meet you) here there is a fada on the 'o' of bothar.: Goh n-eiri an bohar leath. Our 'a' is not pronounced as the English a that is ours is an ah sound while the english a is pronounced ay. This changes in some instances as with the word saor below. I think it is related to the presence/absence of the fada and the floowing consonants. Never gave it much thought :-) s before a short vowel (e and i) results usually in an sh sound. Before a long vowel a,o,u retains the s sound of English. A consonant will change in length depending on the vowel closest to it. Therefore we have this sh sound with the short vowels and a longer s sound when beside the long vowels. e.g. Sin is pronounced shin (this, since) se(fada on e) is pronounced shay(he) si (fada on i) is pronounced shi(she) whereas saor (cheap, free) is sa-or sa (in) pronounced as in the 'sa' of sang. Conas taoi?: How are you Con-as taii: Con-as. Slan:Goodbye (with a fada on the a) Slahn (ending pronounced as in dahn) Slan leat: Goodbye to you (one person): fada on 'a' Slahn leath Slan tamall: Goodbye(Goodbye till later) fada on 'a' of slan Slahn tam-al Slan go foill: Goodbye for now (Goodbye for a while) Fada on the 'a' of slan and the 'o' of foill: Slahn go fo-ill Jane (O'Brien) Gail im MO

    3. Hi, I am Laura Schmidt, the actual addy for Fianna is Fianna-L@rootsweb.com to send mail! To subscribe is Fianna-L-request@rootsweb.com Never heard of GenIre!!!!! If you have irc capabilities you might want to come to the IIGS network. If you want info I or Jeanne can probably set you up, we have an active group of researchers including an exclusive Irish chat session! Let us know and we will get you started. http://www.iigs.org then to irc and go from there Laura schmidtm@3-cities.com -----Original Message----- From: Mike Dellger <schbibik@dataplusnet.com> To: Melvin Schmidt <schmidtm@3-cities.com>; Fianna Mailing List <fianna-L@rootsweb.com> Cc: Gail bpossom Roorda <b.roorda@msc.net> Date: Sunday, September 14, 1997 5:34 PM Subject: Re: Original List Purpose I am curious to know what, if any difference there is between Fianna and this address:GENIRE-L-request@rootsweb.com. I subscribed here but this is the address that appears on each piece of mail: NOT-A-REAL-ADDRESS@bl-30.rootsweb.com. Would someone please shed some light. Also, on my Newswatcher, the only irish genealogy location I can get is soc.genealogy.uk+ireland. I know that there is supposed to be a separate one for Ireland. How can I get that one to show up on my Newswatcher. I keep getting a message that they cannot handle more than the 16000 that are already there. Thanks in advance for any assistance regarding this matter. Mike Dellger

    1. Irish Lists
    2. Bruce Roorda
    3. Hi Mike, I didn't know whether to reply to you personally or not, but I decided to post to the list since other newcomers to this list may have similar questions. The first address (GENIRE-L-request@rootsweb.com ) is the GenIre mailing list which was created when the Genuki list split into two separate lists. It is supposed to be gatewayed to two separate newsgroups one for Britain and one for Ireland. soc.genealogy.uk+ireland which you mentioned is the old newsgroup. Apparently your newsserver does not have the new newsgroups. Since I subscribe to the GenIre list I am not aware of whether my server is carrying the new groups or not. However, I DO know that my server still does not carry the new surnames newsgroups and they were formed months ago. This list Fianna-L is an Irish list which was formed several months ago when some of us were taking classes at VU an online university. It is open to all Irish researchers not just VU students. In fact some of the original Fianna members are taking an hiatus from VU classes this term. I cannot tell why you are receiving mail with the Genire address on it instead of Fianna unless you inadvertently subscribed to Genire rather than Fianna. Maybe I should send you personal email too since the thought just struck me that you make not be receiving our Fianna mailings. I am hoping some of the other list members can throw some light on this subject. As I said I will send a personal reply to Mike. BBFN Gail in MO oppossum

    3. BRAND NEW announcing #Ireland-gen STARTING Monday 15th September 1997 at 20:00 GMT Ireland-genealogy. Meeting every Monday from 20:00 GMT on channel #Ireland-gen. Anyone researching in the Ireland is welcome to attend. This meeting is intended as a get together for people researching Irish ancestors, both from in Ireland and beyond. The idea has originated from the #IIGS-UKgen meetings, but Ireland is so special that we wanted it to have its own session !! The intention is to have more regular communication between people.. e.g. If you are having a discussion on Irish newsgroups then bring it with you and have an interactive chat about it. Bring your surnames and see if anyone else is researching in your area. Bring your books with you and see if you can help others. #ireland-gen is the newest member of the IIGS IRC service, check out the web site <http://www.iigs.org/irc/index.htm> for more themed chat sessions.
