Can any of you suggest anything that we need to see that is not in all the travel literature. We went to Scotland and England two years ago and planned our own trip and did our own driving and we had a blast. Many of the best thing were those that weren't planned. Hi all! I hope the list will be having much more activity. Still searching for McCarron and Lynch of Co. Monaghan, specifically in Tedavnet or Monaghan. Actually at this point, I'm interested in McCarrons located anywhere in Ulster. I too, subscribed to a county list - Monaghan and received not one post. Maybe I'll be the first to send a message. Dear Patrice, I am not an authority on nineteenth century Catholic practices. However, I was raised in the Catholic Church. The most important consideration in choosing godparents was that they would make sure that the children were raised in the Catholic faith. Our godparents were mostly aunts and uncles. Although there were seven of us this was no particular problem since my father came from a family of eleven children. (My mother's family were protestants.) One of my uncles was killed in WW II, but that still left plenty of godparent material. By the time my baby sister, Maureen, was born my brother and I were nearly grown and we were her godparents. However, there was actually no requirement that the godparents be relatives. My parents were a litlte neighbor boys godparents since they didn't apparently have any family who were close. Kia ora Laura I am researching (among others): William Fenaughty b.1812 Killmallock, Co Limerick d. 11 Aug 1875 Mooroopna, Australia. (Not convinced that the family lived in Limerick as there are very few in the church records, we think it may have been a way point before emigration). James McGahey of Clones, Co Monoghan Catherine Theresa Morris, b. 10 Dec 1853 Co Roscommon d. 8 Sep 1927 Patea, New Zealand Thomas Shannon, No county known John, Thomas Bonaventure, Cornelius, Michael and Daniel Fenaughty (all brothers) emigrated to USA in 1860's from Co. Kerry. John Duffy (afterwards Duffey) b. cir 1770 d. 15 Jul 1858, lived in Richview, Clonskeagh, Dublin Cheers Jack (ship rat)

Hi All- I have not been too active lately but do download all the mail. Trying to get my genealogy together. Just got some info that requires about 20 snailmails to follow up. Though I have been printing the lessons for Ch32, I hadn't registered. Tried a couple of time the last two evenings but my registration didn't seem to go. Got an answer? Missed Chat again on Monday. Where and when on Thursday? Hope I remember! :-) re: Bruce Roorda and County mailing list. I subscribed to Co. Don(n)egal (their spelling):-), Co.Londonderry and Co. Down on Sept 18. Received queries on the 19th for Co. Down (Campbell, Stewart, Watson, Long) Thats all! I'm researching Co. Donegal. - Doherty - I have most of my connections there to 1819, when my anscestral family moved to New Brunswick, Canada. Know where all the Dohertys from this line are and quite a few other descendent (daughters) by other names are. Also have found the descendent family of my 4 X G-grandfathers 1/2 brother in Donegal Ire., living on the anscestral farmland. My Canadian anscestor kept good family records. The farm is in the Townland of Labadish, near Manor Cunningham, 10 miles West of Derry. Also - Fetters, Margory - she married William Doherty c-1790. William died in 1818 and Margory brought family of 5 to Canada in 1819. 2 sons, 3 dau. She may have been from the city of Derry. Co.Londoderry. - McLellan - Came from (Rosshire ?) Sct. c- 1745 to Londonderry. Left Ireland 1762 for Halifax Nova Scotia. His grandaughter married a son of the Doherty family from Ireland. Again good records and research of family members but vague on Scotland and Ireland info. Co. Down - McKitrick - My wifes line. From Scotland to Ireland - part of the "Plantation" (mid 1600's) (referances to Lord Dufferns estate near Killyleagh, Co. Down) McKitricks living in Downpatrick, Co. Down in early 1800's. Some coming to Quebec and Ontario from there. My wife anscestors family coming c- 1850 and her grandfather was born in Wakefield, Quebec in 1850. Looking for info on 1650 - 1850 time period. My Webpage URL is in my signature. Sign my Guestbook. Would also like comments on how it comes up on your machine and program. Seems to depend on what system you have.(?) Laura: Good idea: I am looking for CARNEY (Frank or Francis) in Fermanagh Co., and TAGUE (Catherine) who married Francis, in Tyrone Co. Also, looking for LANE (Connor) and HIGGINS (Mary) who were married in 1855 in Galway Co. Their son, James, married a CREHEN from Galway also. And, DONAHUE (Patrick) from Tipperary Co. and his wife RONE (Jane) from Limerick Co. Thanks Joe (Jopa)
I would appreciate it if anyone would tell me what the criteria was for selecting the godparents for your children. The time period was mid 1800's and they were Catholic. Also, does anyone know of a custom for naming the children. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks. Patrice Houck Schadt pschadt@niven.imsweb.net
Laura, I think the database idea is a good one. Do you want us to post our surnames and counties to the list or send them to you personally? BTW has anyone joined any of the new county email lists. I haven't received a single post yet. The rest of my mail does seem to be coming through. Gail Possum Hill Farm
Dear I am researching in County Derry, particularly in Faughanvale. The family I am researching is Magilton (McJilton, McGilton).
Okay, I've whipped out another zip disk and am storing away all the good stuff! Something for me to do since I haven't managed to locate any of our Irish folk yet... Peace. Hi, I'm new to the list. This is my first posting. I'm researching in Monaghan. My Roney ancestors came from near Miligan, and immgrated to the U.S. about 1832. Betty
Dear Everyone, I am about to begin teaching a three-week unit on genealogy to my seventh grade language arts class with the assistance of our social studies teacher. This will be relatively new material for these kids, so we'll need to keep it somewhat simple. I'd like to know if any of you good folks out there might be able to suggest some places on the Net where I might be able to find some materials which would be commensurate to the students' ability. They will need to give me four generations, counting themselves. All assistance much appreciated. Thanks. Mike Dellger
Hi Laura, I have been on this list a long time and just watched.....a good list though I do think everyone is too quiet now. Anyhow Laura I think your idea to put people's interest in counties on a database a great way to go towards assisting those people like me in a slump. I cannot connect to my ancestor in Ireland.... Simon Joseph LEDWICH is said to have come to Victoria, Australia around 1851-52. Simon's Father was Thomas LEDWICH and his Mother's name was Ellen McCABE, I do not know where from or what ship Simon came on. I do surmise though, that he was probably married as he was said to have had a son John Patrick, born on a ship ( I can't find John's birth certificate either ). I do NOT know his first wife's name ( she died ? around 1856? the date is hard to read on Simon's second marriage certificate)....Simon married again to an Eliza RYAN ( Eliza came from Tipperary, Ireland )in Australia and had another son, Simon died of diahorea at age 30. On Simon's death certificate and his marriage certificate to Eliza RYAN it states that he was born in Kildare, Ireland. Does anyone have any idea how I should proceed from here? If you have any connections to the above people I would love to hear from you. Any help given will be appreciated. We are alive! I am responding as quickly as possible and have started a file with all your information! It would probably be a lot more benefical to reply to all, not just to me when sending in info, because someone is bound to stand up and yell, "Hey that is where I am doing my research too!" I might be too slow, so when you write me concerning something you don't mind sharing, cc the Fianna too! Lets get this list active again! Gail or Anne, you might want to save this info as my backup , just in case I crash my drive! (Done that once already!) As of now, I'm primarily interested in Co. Clare. My g-grandfather Michael Dillon emigrated to Buffalo, NY in 1885 (apparently). This was obtained from an obit for his son my grandfather, but can find no other info on he or his wife Bridget Kane. He apparently came with only three children, James, Mary and Michael (my grandfather). I know what happened to them and their children but my g-grandparents had a number of other children (at least three) whose progeny ended up in Australia, New Zealand and Ohio with some staying in Ireland (records almost 40 yrs old). So far I havn't been able to locate any live numbers. Any suggestions??
