I think I have finally found the right group. I am searching for relatives in County Clare by the last name of HENNESSY. John HENNESSY and his brother Owen HENNESSY came to the United States in the early 1900's. Would like to talk to other HENNESSY family members. Thanks Susan Hennessy
Give me some details and I may be able to help you. What was his name, when was he born, was he Catholic? It is almost imperative that you have his parents' names (mother's maiden). Get that bit of information from his death certificate or possible the church sacramental register of his marriage. Ellen
There is an interesting article on the Hill of Tara at the Ireland Tody Site. See: http://www.ireland-today.ie/it/it_magazine/09_zoom.html O'Possum (Gail in MO)
Norma, Tim is not AFAIK a member of Fianna. As I tried to make it clear I found Tim's great advice on another list and posted it to Fianna because I thought it was so good. However, I will try to check with members of other lists I belong to and see what I can find out!! Gail O'Possum the Lost Possum Hill Farm
That's the first time I've heard the explanation from Maria. I have some material that I will be posting in the Hideaway soon about the Fianna and some of the legends around it. Hideaway (DO NOT GIVE OUT URL) is private to this list... http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/fianna/fiandex.html Figure I'll get some new material up this weekend. Tim I am going to Ireland in November and have ancesters in Tipperary. I dont know the parish. I know his name and his parents name and have two possible dates of immigration. One from the census and one from a naturalization paper. Who do you recommend that I write to for a search before I go. Do you have the email or snail mail address. Email would be better because I only have one month. Thanks for any help. NormaNisco@aol.com
This is also a posting I found on another list. It was sent in by a man named Ray Marshall so I will gove him the credit here. I did hesitate for a while before sending this on to Fianna because it is such a long posting. I really did not realize how long it was until I sent it to the printer. Luckily I sent it to the Panasonic since it is much cheaper to run than the inkjet! I have many looseleaf notebooks where I keep this sort of useful information so I printed it off and put it in my Irish Research notebook. As Ray begins his letter, "snailmail is not dead". I have alas found this to be true. Since I have failed to locate all my Irishmen on the web, I have been forced to resort to primtive genealogical practices like writing letters with my word processor, stamping and sealing them (including a LASE of course) and walking them out to the Possum Hill Farm mailbox!! Janet, I just noticed that you had pasted the original query to the bottom of the message. I was going to send you email as well as posting to Fianna when I found the message. I have answered it deleting all references to the "interesting" query etc. After all Fianna is to help people, and this is a good question. I am just not sure I have given the answer. Anyway I am answering the query and I will send you a copy. Gail Possum Hill Farm
Janet, (and anyone else) There is a short bit about the Fianna at the Dalraida site: The Fianna of Erin is on: http://www.electricscotland.com/dalriada/myths/mythol/fianna.html Neckel's Pub Fionn mac Cumhaill and the Fianna http://www.mediatel.lu/team/nmack/mmp_myth_cumhaill.html This is a new one. (Not from my bookmarks) http://celt.net/Celtic/Myths/abt_fin.html Obviously I don't have anything about Limerick boy scouts although one of my lost Irishmen ie paternal ancestors di hail from Co Limerick. I don't have much time to search so I didn't actually find the Limerick Boy Scouts. (The Other Fianna) However there are several Irish Scouting organizations on the web. Catholic Boy Scouts http://www.kst.dit.ie/scouts/cbsi.html Scouting Ireland http://www.iol.ie/~cathcart/index.html FISA A federation of the two above groups http://www.iol.ie/~cathcart/irlscout.htm BTW the CBS does sound rahter like "us" vs the Orangemen. However, according to the sites all three orgainzations are "multi-denominational and coeducational." A Dublin Boy Scout Unit http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/8400/ The De La Salle Scout Unit http://homepage.tinet.ie/~cennis/ Janet, I do know that none of these are the Irish Boy Scouts your enquirer is looking for. However, there are snailmail and email addresses at these sites where whoever made the original query could probably find the answer for their question. Thanks for the interesting peek into some of the interesting questions handled by our capable web master. (Big Grin) Do you get a lot of questions like this? We don't hear from you often enough. I enjoyed trying to help, but I am not sure this information is all that helpful Gail in MO

I have just been reading a book on the West of Ireland and found something that may be relevant. If not relevant, it's interesting. The author is Seán Jennett, the book is "The West of Ireland", published by Batsford, London in 1980. On p 3 of the introduction he says: "In places, at at Spiddal in Galway, in Sligo, and at Carrigaholt in Clare, there are colleges of Irish, where students may come to learn and practice the language in the company of native speakers... .Facility in the language may be indicated by a small, plain ring, the fáinne, worn by students in the lape or as a brooch - a gold ring for the expert, a silver one for those less so." *** I wonder if this is the explanantion. Dear Fellow Researchers; I am sending on account of a journey to Ireland that appeared on another list(Genire). It is not often that I run across an account of someone who has been doing Irish research "out in the field so to speak." I am probably not going to Ireland next week (Big Grin), but I did think there was a lot of information in this letter that is helpful to those of us who are trying to search from a distance. The information specifically concerns research in County Tipperary (someone wrote into the Genire list and said that it was too bad we didn't have information like this from every county). However, maybe this will inspire other list members who have gone to Ireland to write in and tell about their experiences. I do know that there are several Fianna members besides me whose ancestors come from County Tipperary. "Heloo, All! I just wanted to check in and let you all know how the search went while I was in the homeland. Spent a day or so at the National Library searching for ancestors from Moycarkey Catholic parish in County Tipperary. Much thanks for the advice from all who contributed! The unfortunate thing about the NL is that they have rather limited resources in terms of people who can help you. There was a single nun (her name escapes me, but under the circumstances, she was a complete saint) who ran the desk in the reading room and she could tell you where certain things were if you knew what to ask for, but didn't have the time to get into any specifics on individual searches. Some of the other helpers were a bit snippy... The most unfortunate outcome of that day was the realization that all the records for the Diocese of Cashel and Emly in Co. Tipperary (which constitutes about 2/3 of the county, in a big swath across the middle) are unavailable for viewing at the NL. Darn. And there seemed to be some doubt as to exactly who had which records. Bru Boru? Northern Tipperary (in Nenagh)? Turns out the records are spread out between these two and the Tipperary Heritage Unit in Tipperary town proper, but mostly in the latter. There is a listing of just who has what at the NL, according to parish. The Bru Boru mostly only has cemetary inscriptions for the region (as they were read off the stones themselves, so it's a bit sketchy and anything but complete). The search of the Tithe Applotments and Griffiths Evaluation records were somewhat helpful, but I hadn't quite done my homework on what the differences were between the civil and Catholic parishes. There is Moycarkey Catholic parish, which is large, and Moycarkey civil parish, which is small and contained within the catholic parish along with Fertians, Galbooly, and a couple others. A word to the wise - make sure you know whether the parish you're searching in is the religious or civil. The Tithe Applotments and Griffiths Evaluation records are according to civil parishes and the townlands therein. By far the most valuable experience I had was at the county library in Thurles. If anyone wants my advice, skip the NL altogether and just go there. The woman who works in the genealogical room there (her name is Mary) was so incredibly helpful I'm thinking about submitting her name for canonization. She helped me get my arms around the civil/catholic thing and also how to really make effective use of the Tithe Applotments and Griffiths and their respective indexes. Furthermore, they really didn't have anything at the NL that wasn't at the county Library. What they did have that wasn't at the NL was originals for the 1840 Ordinance Survey Maps (the microfilms at the NL are terrible) plus the originals for the Rate Books (similar to Griffiths in content, but covers years from 1846 through 1899) for the area. Mary also helped me figure out exactly who had the proper Church records for the area. My last stop was at the Tipperary Heritage Unit in Tipperary. They are affiliated with a separate organization that the Family Heritage group under which the Northern Tipperary and Bru Boru fall, so if you were thinking that all the information for Co. Tipperary was in the latter two, as their Internet sites would have you believe, you'd better give them a call. The people there were nice enough but very young, so I didn't exactly have confidence that they knew entirely what they were doing, though they did their best. Unfortunately, the farther back you get in the records, the more scanty they get, and there are significant gaps. If you want my advice, when having them do a search, make sure that they send you a Xerox copy of the entire set of listings for a particular surname rather than just information on a single first name. In some cases, there is information on townland of origin which can help you make associations with other possible family members you may not have been aware of. The cost to have them do a search was 15 pounds for two parishes to 45 pounds for all 46 parishes in the diocese. Few parishes have records going back farther than 1795, so you may find your genealogical search coming to an abrupt end after this experience. I hope this little travelogue helps some people who are doing searches in County Tipperary. There are probably some other things that I found out but failed to mention, so if you want to e-mail me, please do so. Good Hunting! Tim Gorman"
Hello all, I had a query from someone that saw the Fianna website, I was wondering if anyone may be able to help answer his question? From what I remember, Fianna was a name that was once used by an ancient Irish army. Does anyone else have any info. on the Fianna name or Fianna Boy Scouts in Limerick? Thanks, Janet From: EDSCOUT@aol.com To: JCowan@prodigy.net I was wondering about the word Fianna. I have a newspaper article that states that my greatuncle was Limerick's first member of the Fianna Boy Scouts. I contacted the Boy Scouts in Ireland, and they said that it had nothing to do with them. Do you, or any of your subscribers know anything of this organization?. Thank you for your time. edscout@aol.com
