    2. These searches allow you to locate any townland, parish or village in each of Ireland's thirty two counties. http://www.seanruad.com/ You can also use wildcards. Mapquest.com can get to the parish but not the townland. Ellen JCorK3@aol.com wrote: > I need some help. Could anyone tell me the location of villages named >Moyneard >and Knocknagh in Co. Tipperary. 1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Villages in Tipperary
    2. in ireland parishes are mostly made up of TOWNLANDS these are rural areas, bog, grazing, farming and open fields. they all had names and you would not know one from the other only that you would stop a a local farmhouse and ask the names of the townlands in the area. there are over 80,000 of them in ireland and thats why you wont find them on most maps. most are not near any town or city but are out in the boondocks MOYNEARD A TOWNLAND of 711 acres in the PARISH OF MOYNE AND IN THE POOR LAW UNION OF THURLES IN COUNTY TIPPERARY. THE ABOVE INFORMATION COMES FROM THE 1851 INDEX TO TOWNS, TOWNLANDS AND PARISHES OF IRELAND. for a map of this area call 515 232 1070 and tell them you want the discovery map that would cover the area around thurles in county tipp. you may need to buy two maps

    1. [FIANNA-L] burns family derry island - castleblayney , co monaghan
    2. De Francesco Wolfango
    3. hello- i am looking for info on my burns relatives originally from derry island, castleblayney, co. monaghan. my great grandfather- thomas burns and wife, catherine mc donnell (or mac donald, mc donald) and five children , andrew j. , michael, frank j. , mary (or bridget), and james t. (bornon sept . 26th, 1872) emigrated to indiana usa then to kankakee , illinois in 1875. i do not know when exactly exceprt for year. wife died early on in indiana or illinois, don't know, and thomas had to put kids in orphanage until he could afford to care for them, later on. andrew grew up to be a monsignor, vicar-general of the archdiocese of rockford, illinois' second city and he taught at a stirling, illinois high school for many years till death.mary never married and kept her brogue all her life, michael died young away from family, was a black sheep i garther, james t. was three in 1875 when they emigrated, he grew up to fight in the spanish-american war under genral pershing, studied law and was an attorney, went to WWI ansd was commander of the illinois L infantry division in army , married anna laura gernon who was from a noble norman family of louth and was also genreal pershing's translator/interpreter in war in the navy, he later had 11 kids and became county judge for many years, he ran for lieutenent governor of illinois (lost) and was a state representative in the house for last 8 years of his life, dying in office. frank j was a famous local attorney in kankakee, a "lawyer's town" for excellence, and he made two trips to ireland before 1958 to see family as we know from a letter, he didn't mention where the family was located so we lost all family contact at his death in late 80's early 90's . we would all like to reunite with our co. monaghan burns family- please if anyone knows a burns family in monaghan, please forward this to them, they may remember frank j coming back twice before 1958 to vidsit family, even if they were young then and we may be able to find this way the correct family. can anyone please tell me the names of all local castleblayney papers and monaghan papers that the burns family might read , so that i may write a letter to editors and ask him t o publish it for all locals to see? i would appreciate any help or info on burns families and in knowing the origins of the burns family in monaghan, i know they were originally chieftains from wicklow, emeigrated to monaghan in 1400's or so....others alater on. any help appreciated! thanks, mary burns-de francesco

    2. De Francesco Wolfango
    3. hello list- i am searching for all gernon ancestors from co. louth, meath, westmeath, and monaghan in all time periods, even up to today. they were an ancient norman family mainly based in louth (gernonstown or baile an gherleanaigh , today castlebellingham) but some in other counties, they arrived with strongbow and were potent family until the 1700's when they became a medical family. i am searching for this medical family in particular at ardee, co. louth, where my branch came from. specifically a john hall gernon, physician and others of his line , our branch is now at 8th generation of physicians in usa , starting from the first gernon doctors in louth in 1700's. they had castlesd and built churches too. i am especially interested in info on their castle at duleek, meath.....it is now a ruin, but once held ling william's bed and the last skins of irish wolves, sold off in an estate sale in 1950's then the new owner stripped the lead roof and let it fall to ruin, now the state owns it and family are trying to have it restored.....any news on this or any other churches, castles or estates of theirs or of family memebers, very very welcome, including info on present-day gernons to contact.....thank you! best regards, mary (gernon descendant)

    3. Hi Paul, Good to hear from you. Yes there are quite a few Gernona and Dowdall marriages over several hundred year period. The Dowdalls married several different Gernons and Plunketts. I spent 5 weeks in Ireland and just returned. Had one full week in County Louth researching the Dowdall family and visiting the ruins of Athcarne Castle, Athlumney Castle, Monkstown and Causeway castles and so many other incredible places. 3. Mary a chara, I have a lot of information about the Gernon family because they married into the Dowdall family. My Mom was a Dowdall and I am researching the Dowdall family. I have a copy of the Dowdall Deeds which goes back to the early 1200s and there are many many entries regarding the Gernons. The castle at Duleek was built by the Bath family. I have a picture taken of it this past August. A Dowdall married a Bath and the Bath and Dowdall coat of arms are carved in stone and on the side of the castle. Just checked Lewis Topigraphical Dictionary of Ireland and find that in the 1830s it is listed as owned by Gernon. Don't know when it changed hands, although there are so many marriages between the Gernon family and the Dowdall family that it may have descended to the Gernons through marriage. Will have to do some checking on this. Jenet Dowdall Bath Plunkett had several celtic road crosses erected in the area. One is in memory of her husband William Bath and another her husband Oliver Plunkett. Have you tried posting on the County Louth and Meath bulletin boards? 3. Mary, Although no relation to me, there are/were Gernon's in Champaign County, Illinois that were physicians. Dr. John Gernon, in particular, practiced there for many years. You might want to visit the Champaign County rootsweb site for more information, and check out the Champaign County Genealogical Society. I know the Urbanan Free Library (also on line and very, very helpful) would have a full biography on him.
