Greetings, I am new to the list and would very much like to know more about the Monday Irish Chat Session. Please forward via private e-mail if the answer is not allowed on the list. Hi Fennidi, Although we those of us who are taking VU classes are paying this time, Thusday Marthe announced that VU is putting up a public access web site where the lessons will be posted without support of course ie no class meetings etc. I think this is a great idea since a lot of ppl think that since there is so much great free stuff on the web there is not a lot of reason to pay to access a site. Actually I was hoping that VU would have a policy this term so that classes would be free to "newbies" and those of us who had taken classes before would pay. Until you take a VU class you don't realize waht they are worth. Anyway Marthe asked for suggestions and Fran suggested links to genelogical sites so for Newbies. Great suggestion flp! Marthe said you could find that stuff elsewhere. Fran said that using search engines didn't turn up Cyndi's Links. Although Cyndi's and IrlGen were my first bookmarks I found Cyndi's URL in an article on searching for your roots in Newsweek. Anyway I do think Marthe is going to act on flp's great suggestion. However, I thought I would just mail my list of "hot lists" to Fianna for those of you who are new. Hi again, I do promise that this is my very last post for the day. I am glad tha hla wrote in because it does illustrate what I was trying to say when I wrote the letter via when I think it is appropriate to "advertise on lists". I first found out about hla's list on Genire. I went for a while and then stopped not because this wasn't a great meeting because it was. I kept forgetting. Then flp mentioned she was going so I did go back for a couple of sessions. I not only find out about groups on lists but I depend on lists for reminders. When I read on Genire that there was a class, I did get to class. Unfortunately I get behind on my lists so I miss reminders about special meetings at IIGS or dalnet etc. When Fianna first started we were always reminding each other about special events. Why don't we all try to reinstitute this practice. If you hear that Pam Middleton Lee or Cyndi Howells is going to be a special guest on IRC post to the list. Anyway this letter is getting longer so I need to get to my original point. Although I seldom get there hla's Irish meeting is actually almost like a class (more of a seminar actually). hla is very knowledgeable. Although it is a smalll group ppl are often thrashing out thorny research problems. I have found the sessions I have attneded to be very worthwhile. It IS a small group, but if more ppl went it would be a larger group. The meetings are on Monday at IIGS. I know that 3:00 CST may not be possible for some of you, but I think it is probably about 9:00 where hla is. It rather reminds me of when I asked a VU student to a special Fianna meeting and he wrote back and told me that it was the middle fo the night where he was and he was still catching up on the sleep he missed attending VU the previous term. But if we want to make contact with the world genealogical community we have to get used to some odd hours. TTYL Gail in MO
Hi again, Thanks to all of those who replied to my "testing" query. I meant to reply individually to all of you as you checked in, but with my two VU groups I still have about ten pieces of email to send out today. Bye for Now possum
I would lke to say that the main reason for me being on this list is that I set-up the Monday Irish chat session on IIGS and at least one person on this list told me it would be a good idea to join, while they were at the chat session. So the advertising goes both ways. I don't think it is any different from the Webring - if someone visits my web site the presence of the Webring encourages them to see yours. Most of the names that I see posting on here ahve attended the Irish chat sessions and added some value to the process. You are all welcome any Monday 21:00 GMT !!! Regards hla - the Lady Endjineer !!! HLA@carebear.demon.co.uk http://www.carebear.demon.co.uk
Hi again guys, Talking about Spam brought something else to mind. A couple of months ago chirho, Jeanne or Cloudy posted a letter to the list. Sorry guys I can't remember which one of you posted and I want to give credit wherever credit is due and you three usually keep us informed of general web happenings. The letter had been posted to a newsgroup by the editor of Family Chronicles Magazine and concerned Spam. It was about how spammmers crashed the old Maiser lists etc.,etc. Anyway my Family Chronicles arrived the next day with the complete article and I meant to post to the list then (I don't think the following was mentioned in the short post to the ng) but it slipped my mind. Maybe some of the rest of you have thought of this, but frankly I hadn't. Every now and then one runs across a letter on a newsgroup or list which is just completely irrational or totally obnoxious. Most of us don't answer these letters because we don't want to start a flame although sometimes it is really difficult not to respond. I have always assumed that these ppl had some sort of a problem (although 99% of the internet commmunity are generous, kindly, sharing folks, we have all run across the other 1%). Any way this is one of the ploys that spammmers use to build their list of victims. Next time you see one of these posts think carefully before you responding!! TTYL The 3rd Rig aka possum

Dear Fennidi, I am pasting a letter to the bottom of this msg that was posted by Diana (Diana I hope you are still lurking here). She didn't cross post here so I am going to! Frankly I think the allegations Diana is countering here are ridiculous. When I join lists or participate in ngs I always made it a point of reading the FAQ (IMHO more ppl should do this). Well enough of this since it certainly doesn't apply to to any of the Fennidi. AFAIK it is not a violation of "netiquette". I hope not since I think there is a possibility that I might have been guilty of violating thios rule if there is such a rule. This is not what I personally would define as Spam. Actually I think both chirho and I and maybe some of the rest of you have "advertised" either VU classes or Fianna on other lists. Besides how do those who are victims of "list addiction" find more lists? :) Actually one reason I participate in lists is to discover new URLs, lists, or interesting events like the Monday Irish group meeting on IIGS etc.!! What do you all think about this? Rigfennid III aka possum Here is Diana's letter. The question was raised (by a forward of a partial message) as to why "I" advertise on other lists and why I don't allow it on my own list. I'm really certain that I 'advertise', but will address the question anywway. Actually, we DO allow advertisement of other lists, classes, and events on the IrelandGenWeb List. I don't believe that all the expertise is in one place and that if it can be found elsewhere, I see no reason why someone shouldn't be referenced to TheShipsList, TIARA, FIANNA-L, the IRELAND-L list or any other list if there is someone there that can help them. In fact, we make a regular practice of referring people to TheShipsList where many people have lists of immigration and passenger lists. Also, any advertisement concerning classes, lists, genealogical supply houses are also welcome as long as they relate to genealogy. Email Surplus houses do NOT! :) They must be in good taste, no lengthy attachments and should be links only. If the person is not subscribed to the list, it will come to my box. (This avoids spammers and flamrs irritating anyone besides me!) If I feel an advertisement is worthwhile to others to see it, I will forward it to the list. Any spamming and flaming is not allowed and repeated offenders will be added to the reject list. As to signature lines - I don't believe that single or even two or three liner signature lines are in violation of an advertisement ban. Many people have useful home page links and I would hate to miss some of them. If you don't want to read them, simply hit the delete key. I know that other list owners have their own rules and restrictions. Rootsweb genealogical lists are not to be used for commercial advertisements. However, if they relate to genealogy, I personally make the exception. If anyone wants to submit an advertisement for an event, you'll welcome to forward it. Hi guys, I hate to bother the list with something this trivial, but I hope somebody has time to answer this. Last night I finished putting all the current Fianna members (actually you are all Fianna members, I am talking about those of us who are taking VU classes) in a group as usual. We will of course keep those of you who are not taking VU classes informed of major progress, but I don't want to use the list to conduct minor class business. Anyway the letter I sent dropped into my Fianna folder. Even worse I then sent another letter to my other study group which dropped into my Fianna folder. Someone in both my study groups suggested tha we include ourselves in the groups we create in our address book so I did that. In the past I have not included myself in these groups. Anyway I am hoping that IE is for some reason tossing these letters to my study groups into my Fianna folder rather than my regular inbox. After checking the addys on the email etc. I am pretty sure that is what is happening. However, on the off chance I thought I should ask whether these letters did appear on the list. The letters had testing in the subject line. I would appreciate a reply from someone who has some time. Gail in MO aka Rigfennid aka possum
Well, another term has started at VU and we have several new Fianna fennidi! If I've enticed them enough, they should have joined this list by now! :) For them and for ALL of us, there are some things I think most folks have missed in the private Hideaway! Most of you have not taken time to stop into the teashop/PUB!!! (the link is way down the page..only five hits since it went up!!!) And I'm looking for new jokes :) So send em on in! And do you know if YOU have a "Celtic" foot or not? The real info is there, take a look! Remember, the URL is NOT to be published. Just add an f to index... http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/findex.html HAVE FUN!!!! Peace. chirho Anne Boyes boyes@gardener.com http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/genealogy/
Hi guys, I may be a little late for the study group meeting tonight. My sister who is an army captain is taking a class at Ft. Leavenworth. She has driven up to my folks and we are going up to see her. However, Sunday night is fine as a permanent meeting time AFAIK. Really wish I had scheduled weekend meetings for my Fian last term. I think we might have had more participants. Quixote I am glad you are going to "hang around" with us. Bye for now, O'Possum
Here's a tidbit for all of us 'budding' genealogists :-)) Mugs Who am I? (Author Unknown) I started out calmly, tracing my tree, To see if I could find the makings of me. And all that I had was Great Grandfather's name, Not knowing his wife or from whence he came. I chased him across a long line of states, And came up with pages and pages of dates. When all put together, it made me forlorn, Poor old Great-Grandpa had never been born. One day I was sure the truth I had found, Determined to turn this whole thing upside down. I looked up the record of one Uncle John, But then found the old man to be younger than his son. Then when my hopes were fast growing dim, I came across records that must have been him. The facts I collected made me quite sad, Dear Old Great-Grandfather was never a Dad. It seems that someone is pulling my leg, I'm not at all sure I wasn't hatched from an egg. After hundreds of dollars I"ve spent on my tree, I can't help but wonder if I'm really me.
I can't find where I bookmarked the "Tiger" site that shows all the cemeteries in the United States. Does someone please have the address? Thanks Laura

VU classes are on the web today. If you are signed up, hopefully you will also rejoin the FIANNA study group! :) There's a special form on our site http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/signup.html and when you sign up for a study group on Marthe's form, use FIA as you time zone!!! (per Marthe and Cesario) Hope to see an email or form response from you soon, we need to meet sometime this week. Peace. chirho Anne Boyes boyes@gardener.com http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/genealogy/
Can anyone out there suggest a person or organization with the knowledge and interest to help me solve a long-standing family mystery? It will probably require a historian or perhaps a collector who could advise me what authenticity might be held by a "Republic of Ireland National Bond 'redeemable six months after after the establishment of the Republic of Ireland'". Many thanks! Fran Weeks
