Jim oneallj@ncn.net Digging into the past in search of the answers for the present! -----Original Message----- From: James O'Neall [SMTP:oneallj@ncn.net] Sent: Saturday, January 31, 1998 8:32 PM To: 'Boyd List'; 'Fianna List'; 'Frost List'; 'O'Neall List' Subject: Sorry for the Virus Warning!!! Sorry to all for posting the virus warning and thanks to all that clued me into it being a hoax. I just suffered through a virus that sneaked into my system and totaled everything so I am perhaps a little paranoid about the situation. Not only caused me a lot of work, (fortunately I had just backed-up) but the downtime was excruciating. Thanks again for all the help in straightening this out and again I apologize for posting the hoax virus warning. Jim oneallj@ncn.net Digging into the past in search of the answers for the present!

    1. DOYLE / SWEET 1830s
    2. Valerie Wotton
    3. I am at a dead end on John Doyle (born Ireland somewhere !!) & Elizabeth Sweet who by 1846 were in Melbourne, Australia, and having children. John was a goldminer (so it is possible he came to Australia via the USA). I cannot find a record of their marriage in Australia. I do so hope that someone can help me with this couple (perhaps find their marriage) as Doyle is a major surname in my ancestry and I have had no luck with them. They named their eldest son John Henry Doyle so Henry might be a clue to something. Death records in Australia do not help as I found 62 John Doyle people. If anyone knows anything about them I will be thrilled. Please email me direct. Many thanks, Valerie Australia

    1. ATKINSON / GARTLETT Louth

    3. Seeking details of the marriage of David George Atkinson to Brigid Gartlett (probably 1820s/1830s). David was a publican and landowner at Mountrush near Ardee in county Louth and it is believed he died about 1843 . They had 7 known children including 3 who never married (names unknown), Sarah (who married Coote & migrated to the USA), another daughter married a Lyons and went to the USA, also a son John who became a Jesuit Priest in New York. I descend from their daughter Mary Ann (born about 1839) who was the only one who came to Australia with her husband Anthony Stokes. Can anyone help me at all on finding a record of Mary Ann Atkinson's birth/baptisms, her marriage to Anthony (between 1853-1857), the marriage of Mary Ann's parents (probably 1820s/1830s) or birth records of Mary Ann's parents, David & Brigid. Does anyone have access to the 1841 census to find this family? Any help at all is appreciated. Valerie Wotton Australia

Does anyone have any information at all about this family from births/deaths/marriages or census records? Any help at all is appreciated. Valerie Sydney, Australia

    3. Not the old Crew Virus again. you cannot get a virus from an e-mail. Only from down loading a file, from the net or e-mail. People should be ashamed to tie up the web with these useless virus warnings. I promise you if there is a really good hacker out there spreading a virus, there is not going to be anything you can do about it. JBW ----------

You MUST be doing something right, otherwise you wouldn't be able to read the following! ;) peace. chirho At 01:22 PM 1/28/98 -0800, another list wrote: Just in case you think you are TC (technologically challenged). The following is an excerpt taken from a Wall Street Journal article: 1. Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is. 2. AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in. 3. Another Compaq technician received a call from a man complaining that the system wouldn't read word processing files from his old diskettes. The customer had stuck labels on the diskettes, then rolled them into the typewriter to type the labels. 4. Another customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes. A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with photocopies of the floppies. 5. A Dell technician advised a customer to put his troubled floppy back in the drive and close the door. The customer asked the tech to hold on, and was heard putting the phone down, getting up and crossing the room to close the door to his room. 6. Another Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to fax anything. After 40 minutes of trouble-shooting, the tech discovered the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor screen and hitting the "send" key. 7. Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually. 8. A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because his computer had told him he was "bad and an invalid". The tech explained that the computer's "bad command" and "invalid" responses shouldn't be taken personally. 9. A confused caller to IBM was having troubles printing documents. He told the technician that the computer had said it "couldn't find printer". The user had also tried turning the computer screen to face the printer but that his computer still couldn't "see" the printer. 10. An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happens." The "foot pedal" turned out to be the computer's mouse. 11. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked "What power switch?" 12. True story from a Novell NetWire SysOp: Caller: "Hello, is this Tech Support?" Tech: "Yes, it is. How may I help you?" Caller: "The cup holder on my PC is broken and I am within my warranty period. How do I go about getting that fixed?" Tech: "I'm sorry, but did you say a cup holder?" Caller: "Yes, it's attached to the front of my computer." Tech: "Please excuse me if I seem a bit stumped, It's because I am. Did you receive this as part of a promotional, at a trade show? Caller: "It came with my computer, I don't know anything about a promotional. It just has '4X' on it." At this point the Tech Rep had to mute the caller, because he couldn't stand it. He was laughing too hard. The caller had been using the load drawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup holder, and snapped it off the drive! 13. Another IBM customer had troubles installing software and rang for support. "I put in the first disk, and that was OK. It said to put in the second disk, and I had some problems with the disk. When it said to put in the third disk - I couldn't even fit it in..." The user hadn't realized that "Insert Disk 2" meant to remove Disk 1 first. 2. Bruce Roorda
    3. Hi again fennidi, The 3 part series on the Irish in America started tonight on PBS. We have terrible PBS reception (and frankly our regular TV reception is not too good either.) My MIL and FIL were going to tape it for me, but I promised to notify them well in advance. Hopefully they will have time to catch the other two. I have been trying to do a little catching up on lists and I ran across this. The date kind of crept up on me. I have fallen behind on some of my lists because of my VU classes, and I am currently approaching opening some of my mail with a certain amount of dread rather than the anticipation I usually feel. Some of you may be feeling the same way. We members of the Fianna can continue to be good "netizens" Really rather dislike the term "netizens" likewise "netiquette" However, for want of a better term just continue ignoring those who are not good "netizens" and following the rules of "netiquette." :) The 3rd Rig aka possum

    3. Dear Robin (and anybody else), It just occurred to me that I didn't actually answer your question. Understand I am not the leader of this group hla is. But I assume she wants it to be public since as I said I found out about it on the Genire list. Actually I am sending this msg fairly late so I am hoping that hla herself or flipper or sometimes has contacted you with the details. The meeting is at IIGS on Mondays (today) at 3:00 CST. It is an IRC chat so you do have to know how to use an Intenet Relay Chat program like mIRC or PIRCH or IRCLE for macs. You may already know this, but please don't be offended if you do. I just realized last night that I have been taking too much for granted, and have been neglecting some ppl. I will close this letter and start constructing another one... I do hope that you Robin will see this letter in time to make it to the chat. Or alternatively that somebody else sent you the information you were asking for! Gail in MO aka O'Possum aka Rig III

    1. From the List Founder and Maintainer
    2. Joe & Laura Schmidt
    3. Hello all! Guess it is about time to say where I stand on the subject of what I see as spam. Anything concerning Irish roots and/or genealogy in Ireland, the British Isles, or anywhere in this world is welcome to be posted to this list, as is Fianna class business. If you have a problem with a particular letter or subject that is posted to Fianna Mailing list please address it to me, do not write it to the list! (What we do not need, are 30 lettlers all posted complaining about one posting. That is how wars and flame wars start. ) I will review the letter and give you my opinion within 24 hours normally. I won't guarentee that you will be happy with my opinion, but it will be done according to the guidelines. Occasional humor is allowed, as long as tasteful and hopefully related to genealogy. If attacks continue on the list, instead of coming to me I will remove the offender from our list. Sorry to have to take a tough stand, but I have watched other international genealogical groups get destroyed by wars like these. We are listed on several genealogy help pages as this for a purpose: FIANNA. A mailing list for those who are researching Irish ancestry and history to discuss ways of improving their skills in searching for their Irish ancestors. Subscribers are welcome to post questions and information regarding sources and methods for Irish research. Specific questions on individual ancestors are beyond the scope of the list. Interested individuals may want to check out The Fianna: Irish Ancestry & History Research web page (http://www.geocities.com/heartland/meadows/4404/). Remember, we are here to help eachother. We like to have meetings posted so anyone of you can get the information, where otherewise you might not. We like people to tell us neat sites, as that is how we put together our initial webpage. We gathered addresses and reviewed them, to see if the concensus of our group liked them and thought they were a good research tool. If you are in doubt, when writing a letter, ask me. Most things are permitted. Thanks Laura L Schmidt aka Cloudy schmidtm@3-cities.com

I'm happy to see crossreferances as I have a very poor systems of self reminding. :-) Always glad to see referances to something new related to Irish gen. and like it when the full path to CHAT time is announced. I share a lot of online info such as our with members of my Genealogical Society who are on line. That Cyndi Howell chat of Dec.30 is a GEM. Logs of dialog such as that are priceless. So for Chat announcement, a must is, (ie. Sun. 6PM PST irc. iigs.org #Fian) Otherwise I usually miss them. Please keep telling me where to go, ;-> , and how to get there!!!!!!!!!! How about posting a list of the 3 or 4 Chats that are of pertinent interest to the Fianna Group as a whole. Another reminder! Also for new members who sometimes state, "how do I get there", a posting of the route to go for mIRC. Make it step by step. (or any other program requested?) Enough, already. :-) Also thanks for the tip about answering "Spammers". From now on, "TRASH". I can see where answering is a waste of time. Slainte, Hugh.
