I heard this happened elsewhere recently, Anne. While I have my Email, name, and 'handle' on a page, there's little else. However this problem does concern me for myself as well as others. Unfortunately, I was afraid of this and have hesitated to take any more courses on-line. What is the best solution? I doubt that we will be able to maintain anonymity for any length of time regardless of the decision made now. Having said that, I must admit ignorance of the Internet safety measures or other options available. I would like my personal data deleted as soon as possible. Other than that, I'll go along with you and the majority. Regards in peace, Joanna ----------
Some of you are getting two copies, if you're in the current fian and haven't signed up for FIANNA-L you only have one copy and that should clue you that you're missing some good stuff! :) Now to the business: Well, I guess we knew it would happen someday! In spite of the warnings in every notice about the private area being PRIVATE and to not post anything about it on the web - for which reason also we do NOT have archives for this mailing list - someone has kindly shared one of the private URL's with another person, who probably shared it with a few more... there's been a big jump in some of the counters in the past 24 hours and the celtic toes page URL showed up in a newsgroup message today. I have changed the "return to" link at the bottom of that page to go to the general front page and taken all the other private pages down for now. It was in the private area for copyright reasons and will be taken down in a couple of days (waiting so it doesn't cause questions for suddenly not being there...) What do we want to do? Move the private pages to another, unadvertised, site? If it's in geocities I won't be willing to pay for geoplus for it, the way I do for the site now to avoid advertisements... [and also because we're well over 6 MEGS !! :) and I'm working on a page for every county, which will take up up another meg or two... !! As well as your projects which are coming due, fian :) ] Move the private pages into a separate directory and each swear in blood not to reveal any URL that includes that directory name? Might work, because then no one would accidentally share one, you'd see the word "private" right there in the URL.... Scrap the pages which have profiles, etc and personally revealing stuff? And any page I'm not SURE about the copyright status on? [Which is most of the jokes on the Pub/teashop pages which almost no one visited anyway... and the stuff about arms belonging to an individual, not a family..] and not have a private area at all? Talk about it, email about it and let's make a decision here, folks. :) Peace, anne PS. And I just wrote Brian Levrich(sp?) about getting space on rootsweb.com!!! for our public pages :) It will probably be a while before we hear... PAX. Fennidi, When I was investigating the newspaper URLS the other day (for our class assignment), I also checked Cyndi's Links to see what she had on newspapers and found some neat things. Last night when I went back to investigate a little further, I couldn't believe my eyes. Cyndi's site has a whole new look. An incredible change in just a few hours! Furthemore all the links appear to be working. I really don't know how she does it!! This letter may get longer because I just found another cool site. I was going to tell you about a neat article at Everton's that I skimmed over last night and thought you might like to read. However I just pressed on a link at Everton's and found the most wonderful link site. It may be even neater than the sites Marthe gave us. I have just been reading a newspaper published in my maternal ancestors hometown. i think I will put this one on the classroom BB. http://pppp.net/links/news/ The Ultimate Collection of News Links http://www.newslink.org/menu.html Air News Link http://www.everton.com/oe3-18/papers.htm This is where you can find the Everton's article on using newspapers to help with your research http://www.refdesk.com/paper.html Another newspaper site. And one more County Mayo newspaper for those of you with County Mayo Roots. (possum has no Mayo ancestors). http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/WPeople.htm This one has obituaries (modern ones of course, but it could be a good way to identify incidence of surnames etc.) Okay as promised this is my very last word on newspapers. However, you might want to look over Cyndi's newspaper links yourselves. There is a veritable treasure trove here: http://www.cyndislist.com/newspapr.htm Bye for Now possum aka Rigfennid

Here is a new page linked to the Celtic Welding Links. <http://www.angelfire.com/ut/humceltic/IrishTrc.html> After the Fian Chat Sunday, I decided to put up a page about the "Westward Movement". I had told Chirho I was acquanted with the Buchannan Lineages. I actually am descended from John Campbell a merchant associate of John Buchanan. Also a Clan Buchanan descendant on another lineage. Dia daoibh! In VU we are working on a newspaper lesson and "the ploy". It is really very interesting, but as I was mailing my homework to the group, I thought that some of the rest of you might be interested in the following URL so I mailed my homework off to the Fian (in order to spare the entire list from reading my homework.) Briefly "the ploy" involves writing letters to newspapers in spots where your ancestors once lived in order to find relatives. The following is not a newspaper URL, but is I think a site which would be perfect for a variation on the ploy: http://www.esearch.ie/index.html E-Search E-Search is a spam protected Irish email directory. You can search for ppl with your surnames here. E-Search will find ppl with the surname of interest. It gives you their address so you can find out if they might be from near the place your ancestors emigrated from. That way those of us with common surnames won't annoy everybody in Ireland by writing to them asking about possible relatives. This is not strictly a genealogical site so you may find ppl who are not fellow researchers, but they might enjoy hearing from you anyway and might even have some useful information. Slan go foill! (Bye for Now!) Rig3 aka possum

Also chirho is going to begin a Fian for those who are taking Diana's ceritification class. I am just occassionally sitting in, and am not actually taking this class since I am so far behind in the classes I am already taking. I would like to take the cert class sometime. We also do a lot of chatting about our own research. (Actually if nobody has any questions we usually chat more about our individual research than we do about our VU homework and projects.) Some of us are taking the VU class for the 3rd time. (We're very sloooow learners hehehe). Anyway you might find the meetings interesting. All members of Fianna are welcome to attend whether they are taking either the VU classes or the certification class or not. You do need to download IRC software in order to participate. If you have a PC you need mIRC or pIRCH which are windows programs. Let me know if you have something else. There is a mac program, IRCLE, and a program for unix etc. You can download mIRC (which most of us use) at: http://www.mirc.co.uk/get.html There is also a FAQ and other helpful information at this site! The pIRCH site is http://www.bcpl.lib.md.us/~frappa/pirch.html Both Fianna and the certification classes are meeting Sunday night at IIGS. Hi Folks, I'm searching for information on my great-great grandmother Ellen Moylen. She married Timothy O'Connell, and they resided in Niagara Falls, NY, in the early 1850's. It is very possible that Ellen died there around 1853. There may have been a Branchford family that was closely associted with these people. Ellen had a sister named Maria. This is all I know about her. Tim , his two children John and Ellen, and his mother-in-law, also named Ellen came to Winnebago County, Wisconsin in the mid-1850's. Are there still any Moylens in the area? Timothy was residing for a time with the Augustus Porter family. Tim and Ellen attended St. Mary's of the Cataract church. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike Dellger

From http://www.hatchoo.com: Welcome to the official site of Spammers Anonymous. This site is made for people on the Internet that spam. The most important part of getting rid of a problem is to admit you have one. Hundreds of people spam every day without knowing it. At the bottom of this page you can do a test to find out if you are a spammer. What is spamming? Spamming is concidered to be: "the compulsive urge to send huge amounts of unwanted email by individuals (or companies) to a larger number of people". According to C-Net, half a billion spams are sent daily. That's 8 spams per person. More than 30 percent of the e-mail traffic consists of spam. This has to stop! Wanford Wallace (the twinbrother of Snaford Wallace, the manager of Cyberprofanity, the most notorious spam-company ever) founded the Spammers Anonymous. He was disgusted of his brothers actions and wanted to help the victims of spam-fever. If you have been spammed, you can turn the spammer in. We will contact him to try to heal him. Tell spammers about this site and maybe we can make the Net a better place, remember Internet is a network of people! _________________________________________________________________ ARE YOU A SPAMMER? Choose the answers most appropriate to you. The test exists of 12 questions. At the end of the page you can check your score (only when you answer ALL the questions). No information will be sent from this page (except of course YOUR e-mail address to Cyberprofanity, hey! we have to make a living too). _________________________________________________________________ 1. (_) 1, why have more? (_) 2-5, just for fun... (_) more than 5, cause some addresses get blocked by angry providers 5. How many e-mail adresses do you often mail to? (_) less than 10, some friends and family (_) less than 20, friends, family and people i met on the net (_) more than 20, friends, family and people i don't even know (_) more than 150, including addresses i bought from others! 6.
