Conor Newman, an archaeology lecturer at NUI Galway, said the discovery at the ancient site made sense of the positioning of other graves and monuments in the area. Mr Newman, who has been working on the Hill of Tara under the State-funded Discovery Programme since 1992, was delighted by the find. "It fills a very important place in the jigsaw because it allows us to make sense of the distribution of other monuments all around it." The Discovery Programme, set up under the auspices of the Heritage Council, carried out a survey of the Hill of Tara between 1992 and 1996 when Mr Newman was director. When Mr Newman moved to Galway he continued to be involved in the project Using sophisticated technology, he and his team of experts mapped what was underground. The work was slow and tedious because it yielded such a huge amount of information. What they uncovered eventually at the crown of the hill was a huge, oval-shaped monument measuring about 170 metres at its widest point. Around it are 300 post holes measuring two metres wide, indicating a massive human effort involved in the construction. "We think it probably dates from 2500 to 2300BC and still had a big physical presence even after the posts were taken out or rotted," Mr Newman said. While the monument is located just below the ground's surface, there are no plans yet to dig it out. "There was a time when excavation was the first step in archaeological research. That's not the case now because it really is the systematic destruction of a monument. When you are dealing with something as important as the Hill of Tara, you don't do something like that lightly." Mr Newman reckons they will be able to learn more about the site from the data before the ground itself is finally excavated. "What we have is the clearest underground image I have ever seen. This one jumps off the page." Mr Newman is concerned about a planned extension of the N3 motorway from Clonee to just north of Kells. One of the sections from Dunshaughlin to Navan runs along the east side of the Hill of Tara. I have absolutely no doubt that they will be destroying dozens of monuments connected to Tara. ************************************************************* Ellen Evert Hopman, author, herbalist, Druid Priestess www.geocities.com/gaias_song/willow.html " Gaine daughter of pure Gumor, nurse of mead-loving Mide, surpassed all women though she was silent; she was learned and a seer and a Druid." 1. [FIANNA-L] CONROY-----FAHERTY/FLAHERTY BROOKLYN, 1887 FORWARD
    2. Lorraine Conroy
    3. Trying to find out if we have found the right Conroy in Co.Mayo, Thomas Conroy & Mary Costello, Cong, Mayo, children James & Thomas 1865, Thomas seems to fit, it's the only combo of these 2 names that I have been able to find. Understand they came from Mayo. Thomas married in Brooklyn to Mary Faherty/Flaherty in Feb 1889.Thomas lived on Wallabout st, Mary on Greene av. She came from a large family. One of her brothers keep the name of Faherty, he buried some of the family in Holy Cross in Bklyn, and it gives his address as 207 Moffat st, which I know was right as we visited him there in 1950. Learned that he had either a daughter Eleanor or a step daughter ,Where is she, where is Andrew & his wife buried? They also had a brother named Thomas who was in the Spanish American war and died in 1918, wife was Sadie, children Raymond ,Thomas & Eleanor McMullen, where are they? They lived in Jackson Hgts in 1946 when Sadie died. He worked in the navy yd. Most of the Flaherty/Conroy men worked on the docks in Bklyn. Thomas my g.father was killed there in early 1901. no death certificate due to him drowning ,no body recoved. Because of this my g. mother had to place the children that couldn't work in St Dominic's home, my father being one of them , 4 went in in 1905, 3 returned home, the baby died within 3 mos. of being there. The children went back home in June 1907. Hoping some one sees something in this that they may be able to help me find where Andrew and his wife are buried and where some of their children might be if alive. Thanks to all Ed Conroy

    2. Paul E. Dowling
    3. Please forgive the cross posting, but this mail regards all Ireland based lists. It touches on the UK's plan to destroy what is known as "overseas" records. These are vital records, such as BMD's of folks born at sea. Although I don't think I'd be effected by the plan, who knows. The bonehead that I am, I can't recall what site I got the original notice from. My thanx to whoever sent the original. 2. The late John Broderick, under the name of Sean Ruan, left us a legacy. These searches allow you to locate any townland, parish or village in each of Ireland's thirty two counties. http://www.seanruad.com/ You can also use wildcards. Mapquest.com can get to the parish but not the townland.
