More on the name Walter, from O Corrain & Maguire(cite below): Uater, Uaiter: borrowing from Old Germanic Waldhar, from vald, rule, and harja, folk. Brought to England by Normans and then to Ireland. Irish forms reflect medieval English forms Wauter and Water but the form Ualter and the diminutives Uatin and Batin also occur in medieval Ireland. (p. 175, accent marks removed) Sierra's book has basically the same info, with the form Bhatar, pronunciation VAH-tuhr. Books about Celtic names: O'Corrain, Donnachadh. *Irish Names*. 2nd ed. Dublin: Lilliput Press, 1992 Rosenkrantz & Satran. *Beyond Sean and Shannon*. (This one is from memory-- it may be *Beyond Shannon and Sean.*) Sierra, Judy. *Celtic baby Names:Traditional names from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man*. Aimed at writers who need authentic names for their novels, it has lists of names and commentary on naming patterns from many times & places. I also found a website that has Scottish names from various eras. Unfortunately, the computer I was using when I found it didn't print the URL on the printout. They're done folks :) Gobs and gobs of entries on our surname pages. I noticed some of these were duplicates, but there was a variation in some information, so I decided to go a head and post them! If you send me a note which CLEARLY tells me which to delete, or how to revise them, I'll be glad to do so - for the folks on this list :) I've even made it possible to do it with the form :) There were five folks who had such extensive and involved histories I couldn't decide how to enter their posts, so I've asked them to break them down for me so I can post them. To the best of my knowledge, all the rest of the roll call is posted !!! :) Thanks, all, for participating. One Gaelicized version of Walter is Bhaltair. I have a good book of Irish/Scotiish Gaelic names and another on names in general, but I can't seem to find either of them at the moment. If no one else comes up with anything, I'll get back to you as soon as I find the books (they are here somewhere....) Can someone offer me a lead. I have a rough copy of the Thesis my Great Grandfather wrote when he sat for his MD at New York Hospital in 1858. I would like to know if this kind of info is available in some Archival Data Base online?????? Is there another Mailing List that might be more appropriate for this kind of querie? Although this is not exactly "Irish", GGPa was the first of my Canadian line to be so born. (1830) GGGpa came from Co. Donegal to Canada in 1819. :-) Thanks, Hugh. Names and details on Local Histories which you have on your shelves are rolling in. I received a tip on where to find the Ordnance Survey Memoirs for Northern Ireland which are available through All-Ireland Heritage at <http://www2.smart.net/~aihdrh/osmem100.html> Here is a description found at that site: The Memoirs are a uniquely detailed source for the history of much of Ireland for the time frame immediately precedingthe Great Famine of the 1840s. They were written primarily in the 1830s and intended to be printed to accompany the "6 inch to one mile" map series: but they failed to reach the presses until just recently! Now the manuscripts are being published in a series as a joint undertaking of the Royal Irish Academy,Dublin, and the Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's University of Belfast. The Memoirs document the landscape and situation, buildings and antiquities, landholdings and population, employment and livelihood of the civil parishes which are covered in each, some volumes even containing names and details of emigrants during the period written about. [!!!!] As such they are valuable sources of information for the family genealogist and local historian to use in "fleshing out" those cold statistics and impersonal data research generates by putting "people on the land back in time".The series volumes are numbered consecutively, beginning with Vol. 1.However, several counties have required more than a single volume to complete the publication of all available manuscript material. These"intra-county" volumes, while numbered sequentially for the county, do not have a sequential series volume number. The counties for which volumes are available are: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Tyrone. Go to the site for more detailed information. Unfortunately, "the Ordnance Survey Memoirs for the Republic rest at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin in 54 boxes and have not see the light of day for many years." Wouldn't you love to see these available on a searchable CD? I have started going through the various Heritage Center webpages to see what they have available for sale that would fit into the description of "local or parish history". This information is not easy to come by, so I would really appreciate your help in contributing more. Also, let me know if you know what is GOOD, where it can be purchased, or found in a library. And would you be willing to have your name or e-mail address attached to the listing, so you could be contacted for further information about the book. At least for now, the list will be posted at the IrishGenealogy.com site at <http://www.irishgenealogy.com/irish.htm>. More will be coming. By the way, if anything I have listed is "useless" please tell me and I'll take it off. Sunjective opinions are just fine. Parish Histories I know that there are parish histories published in Ireland because I have some that I found when visiting there. And I know that there were many compiled and published by local historical societies with the assistance of professional historians and FAS trainees in the early 1990s. However, none of them seem to be indexed in any Irish website or booksellers' website, at least none that I have been able to locate. I wonder if it might not be possible for all of us, working together, to compile a master list, organized by county, that we could post somewhere (perhaps the Ireland GenWeb?) so people looking for local history would have some idea of what exists and might be found in a library, or might even be available to buy. I would be willing to coordinate this, if others would like to contribute. Here's an example of what I have: 1. LIMERICK, Cappamore: "Cappamore, A Parish History", Cappamore Historical Society, 1992 , 439 pages, hardcover, illustrated with maps, facsimiles of documents, photographs. No index. Contents: geology, Archealogical and Historical Sites, Townlands, Landownership (Tithe Applotment and Griffiths lists), The Famine, the Big Houses, Ecclesiastical History, Education, Clubs and Organizations, Social Life, songs, Irish words in common use, population figures, bibliography. 2. LIMERICK, Doon: "Dun Bleisce - A History", Cumann Forbartha Dhun Bleisce, 1990, ISBN 0 95 16222 O X, 200 pages, hardcover, illustrated with maps, charts and photographs. Index to names and places. Contents: Topography, Archealogy, Ancient and Holy Wells, Early Parish Churches, Tithe Applotment, the Big Houses, History, Education, Folklife, Clergy, Civil Survey, ancients and modern maps, reproductions of 17th century documents, bibliography. 3. LIMERICK and TIPPERARY, Diocese of Cashel and Emly: "St. Ailbe's Heritage - A Guide to the History, Genealogy & Towns of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly", Tipperary Heritage Unit, 1994, 124 pages, softcover, illustrated with maps, charts, photographs and drawings. No index. Contents: History, biography, churches, castles, big houses, schools, genealogical research, information sources, names, population lists of parishes 1841-1971, short parish histories. Bibliography. 4. GALWAY, Abbey/Duniry, Ballynakill, Killimor, Mountshannon, Portumna, Tynagh and Woodford area "Lough Derg - The Westside Story", East Galway Family History Society, Ltd., 1993. This publication is a large color map (30 x 34 inches) at scale of 1.5 inches to the mile, covering the area from Killimor to south of Mountshannon and from Lough Atorik to Carrigahorig, with inserts of the villages of Woodford and Portumna. It folds up into book size with a stiff cover. No index. The contents are printed on the back of the map: Contents: Ancient stone monuments and dwellings, social history, religious sites, castles. nig houses, industry, flora and fauna, contemporary leisure activities, folklore, towns and villages, brief bibliography. Also included is a small pamphlet of current local accomodations, pubs, restaurants, church services, shops and sports facilities. 5. GALWAY, including many Southeast Galway parishes such as Abbey/Duniry, Ballynakill, Killimor, Portumna, Tynagh and Woodford, mainly the Clanricard Estate, "A Forgotten Campaign - and Aspects of the Heritage of South East Galway" , Woodford Heritage Group, published by East Galway Centenary Committee; undated, but after 1986. Maps, photographs. Contents: A collection of articles by many authors, mainly focussing on the last phase of the the Land Wars, especially in 1886. History, geography, biography, lists of names of those evicted, arrested. Bibliography. A companion book is "Clanricard Country", which I don't have, but the Woodford Hertitage Centre says that it "provides an insight into the Clanricard dynasty and the plight of the evicted tenants. Can you look at your shelves and see what you could add to the list?
