Hi, I have just bought the Tithe Defaulter's Index - Ireland - 1831 and found two of my ancestors. The indexes for Kilkenny and Tipperary have the largest number of defaulters. There are good representation for Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Louth and Wexford. Laois Meath Carlow Offaly Kerry have been combined. Each county includes: an introduction relating the history of the Tithe Defaulters, the Clergy Relief Act, the sworn Affidavits by the Clergy, and a comparison with the data from the 1831 census. The indexes provide the name, address and occupation and reference numbers to the original material. Although the Tithe Defaulters Index does not cover every county, it is a very useful research tool which, in view of the deficit of Irish material, will assist many thousands of local historians and genealogists. The URL for this site is http://www.alphalink.com.au/~datatree/index.htm Kick

In order to attend classes, you should be able to use your browser to go to the java chat, unless you're in Windows 3.xx rather than Win95. But to get to Fianna Study Group meetings, assuming you're in the Fianna study group, you DO need IRC software. Most of us use mIRC. There are links to lots of places with instructions and explanations on http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/find.html > >3. I have been subscribing to FIANNA because of the Irish information. >What exactly is Fianna? Is a venue for members of a previous VU class to >communicate? Cloudy started the Fianna-L so fennidi (explained at link below) could continue to communicate good sites, problems and successes, etc. chirho tends to try to keep everybody chuckling, so it sweetens the taste when she has to bark at folks to get busy and sign up for things! We've grown quite a bit beyond that, however, and hopefully more folks will do more genealogy on the list :) On the Fianna Hideaway site there is an explanation of who we are and how we came to be. http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/ipig.html > >4. I have visited the Fianna webpage. Is the material there mostly the >result of the classwork of previous class members? Fianna: Irish History and Ancestry at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/4404/ was our first effort. It's mainly links which we gathered as a project. JCowan put the whole thing into its current state. FIANNA Hideaway and Guide to Irish Research is the product of several additional groups. Yes, most of the material there represents projects done for Marthe's classes. The surname center was not, and some of the other pages, plus the counties were donated by one member. We're rather proud of it, and keep working on it :) > >Are there other questions I am too ignorant to ask that someone would >like to fill me in on? I'll send this to the list, so anyone else who's curious can see the answers :) Peace. chirho >Thanks for helping. > >Anne > > > > chirho@prodigy.net http://www.hoseahouse.org http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/genealogy/index.html http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/index.html

And now for something totally obscure! Recently reported in the Massachusetts Bar Association Lawyers Journal, the following are 22 questions ACTUALLY asked of witnesses by attorneys during trials and, in certain cases, the responses given by insightful witnesses: 1. "Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning?" 2. "The youngest son, the twenty-year old, how old is he?" 3. "Were you present when your picture was taken?" 4. "Were you alone or by yourself?" 5. "Was it you or your younger brother who was killed in the war?" 6. "Did he kill you?" 7. "How far apart were the vehicles at the time of the collision?" 8. "You were there until the time you left, is that true?" 9. "How many times have you committed suicide?" 10. Q: "So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th?" A: "Yes." Q: "And what were you doing at that time?" 11. Q: "She had three children, right?" A: "Yes." Q: "How many were boys?" A: "None." Q: "Were there any girls?" 12. Q: "You say the stairs went down to the basement?" A: "Yes." Q: "And these stairs, did they go up also?" 13. Q: "Mr. Slatery, you went on a rather elaborate honeymoon, didn't you?" A: "I went to Europe, Sir." Q: "And you took your new wife?" 14. Q: "How was your first marriage terminated?" A: "By death." Q: "And by whose death was it terminated?" 15. Q: "Can you describe the individual?" A: "He was about medium height and had a beard." Q: "Was this a male, or a female?" 16. Q: "Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney?" A: "No, this is how I dress when I go to work." 17. Q: "Doctor, how many autopsies have you performed on dead people?" A: "All my autopsies are performed on dead people." 18. Q: "All your responses must be oral, OK? What school did you go to?" A: "Oral." 19. Q: "Do you recall the time that you examined the body?" A: "The autopsy started around 8:30 p.m.." Q: "And Mr. Dennington was dead at the time?" A: "No, he was sitting on the table wondering why I was doing an autopsy." 20. Q: "You were not shot in the fracas?" A: "No, I was shot midway between the fracas and the navel." 21. Q: "Are you qualified to give a urine sample?" A: "I have been since early childhood." 22. Q: "Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?" A: "No." Q: "Did you check for blood pressure?" A: "No." Q: "Did you check for breathing?" A: "No." Q: "So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?" A: "No. Q: "How can you be so sure, Doctor?" A: "Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar." Q: "But could the patient have still been alive nevertheless?" A: "It is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere." chirho@prodigy.net http://www.hoseahouse.org http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/genealogy/index.html http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/index.html
This was forwarded to me-yep, this would be annoying! So now it's out-it was all a big plot! Happy Easter, anyway, everyone :) Peace. anne 25 Favorite Ways To Annoy A Yankee 1. Take your own sweet time when doing ANYTHING. 2. Pronounce all one-syllable words with two. 3. When giving directions, finish with "and it's right down yonder on the left." Confuses the mess out of 'em. 4. Talk REAL slow, and ask them to speak more slowly so you can understand what they're saying. 5. When they talk nostalgically about the North, tell 'em "Delta's ready when you are!" 6. Talk loudly and often about SEC football or ACC basketball. 7. Refer to every soft drink as a Coke. (This really does annoy 'em!) 8. Always order sweet tea and/or grits. When they don't have it, raise a ruckus. 9. Offer to send 'em a bottle of fresh air. 10. Insist on being addressed by your first AND middle names. (e.g. Lisa Marie -- John Michael -- Jim Bob. . .you get the idea) 11. Frequently bring up "The War of Northern Aggression" in conversation. If anyone ever says the words "Civil War", always interject that "there was nothing civil about it." 12. Address all males as "son" and females as "little lady". 13. Correct their pronunciation of certain words. For example: It's "Pah-kahn" not "Pee-can". (Amen) 14. Put Tabasco on everything. 15. For New York Yankees: Act as if the whole state of New York is New York City. In other words, if they say "Yo, I'm from upstate New Yoik!",say "Well, I'll be darned, my wife has always wanted to see a Broadway show!" 16. When invited to dinner, offer to bring dessert. Show up with a box of Moon Pies. . .preferably the banana ones. 17. Name all of your children "Bubba". (or just call em that!) 18. Use the word "reckon" in a sentence and watch their reaction. 19. "Mash" buttons. "Cut" off lights. "Carry" the kids to school. 20. Never simply "do" something. Be "fixin to do" something. 21. Tell them you don't have an accent, they do. 22. Be sure to include "yes/no ma'am/sir" in all conversations...Offends the heck out of 'em. 23. Only use landmarks and ramble on when giving directions. "Now go down Jeff Davis Highway and turn left at where the Chevron station used to be. I think they turned it into a Amoco. Or maybe a BP. Anyway, turn right there..." "You said left." "Did I? Well, turn left there and follow it until you see a big fish on your left. I remember when that fish used to be on the other side of town.." 24. Ask them if it's still snowing up North. Then tell 'em you went driving around in your convertible this weekend. 25. Call 'em a yankee. Works every time. _______________________

Happy Easter all! VU classes are about to begin. Is this the year when you start to write up that mountain of Irish research data you have collected? It is for me and I am enrolled in the "You Too Can Write History" class at VU. If you have also enrolled for this class and are interested in writing your IRISH family history, Fianna has a fian for us! Go to http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/signup.html and fill out and submit the form to be included! You will be part of an energetic and growing study group for Irish research, and we will focus on the material for this class. Be sure to check the button for "Writing Family Histories". We will be the first to try this topic in the FIANNA so take the opportunity. Maria -- M.M. Greetings, all! the counter on our front page is up to 2932 and climbing! I don't doubt that over this weekend it will top 3000 ! :) That's 2800 since we opened the site to the public in late December. Now, If we get a few more really great things in place, we might well be pushing at 1000 hits a month! So if you have research guidance for folks that you'd like to have coded and added to the site, send it on! :) And for those who celebrate Passover or Easter, may your holy days be joyful! Peace. anne chirho@prodigy.net
Just thought you would all like to know, we are not as small as we thought! Fianna-L has 169 subscribers and Fianna-D 98! Also I changed the taglines, AGAIN! and if any of you have any more suggestions on the list please e-mail me at schmidtm@3-cities.com . Laura

Well the 1st thing you need to do is share those dates, names and places with the list, not just me, so that chirho and the others can take a look....From what I see John.A.Flynn@ual.com might just be a cousin, and I know we have other Ryan researchers! So I am forwarding your mail to the list and want to see the answers fly to the list too...maybe we can put together some cousins! I have signed up for the Intermediate Genealogy class starting Monday on VU, but there are a few things I don't understand. I need a mentor. 1. It told me to download a Browser. Does this mean that AOL's browser won't work? (I will be getting the class through my AOL account.) 2. There was a note about Chat in there somewhere that directed me to download Chat software and then, with a note about how easy it was (!/!), there were about 4 pages of scary-looking instructions. I haven't tried yet. Would someone like to reassure me, or tell me I don't really need to do this. 3. I have been subscribing to FIANNA because of the Irish information. What exactly is Fianna? Is a venue for members of a previous VU class to communicate? There seem to be notes about people getting together elsewhere for sharing. Can someone clarify this for me. 4. I have visited the Fianna webpage. Is the material there mostly the result of the classwork of previous class members? Are there other questions I am too ignorant to ask that someone would like to fill me in on? (excuse clump of dangling propositions) Thanks for helping. A week ago I posted the following message: >I know that there are parish histories published in Ireland because I have some that >I found when visiting there. And I know that there were many compiled and >published by local historical societies with the assistance of professional historians >and FAS trainees in the early 1990s. However, none of them seem to be indexed in >any Irish website or booksellers' website, at least none that I have been able to >locate. >I wonder if it might not be possible for all of us, working together, to compile a >master list, organized by county, that we could post somewhere (perhaps the Ireland >GenWeb?) so people looking for local history would have some idea of what exists >and might be found in a library, or might even be available to buy. I would be willing to coordinate this, if others would like to contribute. Quickly I received several useful contributions and an offer to host the list from Georgeann Malowney at IrishGenealogy.com. The URL there is http://www.irishgenealogy.com/IrishResearch.htm and you will see some other useful materials and links there as well. In the last week I have prospected around the web, picking up gold and sifting out the dross, for the list. You probably won't find YOUR parish hstory, but it's a start. But if you do have something that falls into this category, please share it. I received a message from someone who visited the National Library in Dublin looking for such a list, and did not find it. So you see, it is a job that needs to be done. Your help is much appreciated.
