    2. JLedit
    3. Hi everyone! The Irish families I am researching are: Lawler, McCarthy, Butler, Keane, Cashman, and Rice. My Keanes have been troublesome as they seem to have immigrated to Leeds, England from County Waterford before treking to the United States. If you've got any of these names in your clans, please let me know! This study group is great!

    3. Saw this, posted by Joanna, on one of the lists, though did not get the GENCLASS posting. Will be going on to tonight's CERT class, and see if she's home and better or what's going on...Hope to see most of you (who normally come) there at, 8pm EDT. Diana had just sent out work that class would be meeting on FRIDAYS and Sundays instead of THURSDAYS and Sundays. :) Peace, anne >>>Subject: [GENCLASS-L] FYI - list owner is ill Tonight during a face-to-face college class she was teaching, Diana, the list owner and host of Mother Hubbards Cubboard, the Worldgenweb and Irelandgenweb collapsed and was taken to the hospital for an apparent heart attack. Diana is the teacher of most of our free online genealogy classes so thought you should all know. Please keep her in your prayers. Hopefully she'll be back with us soon.>>>>> chirho@prodigy.net http://www.hoseahouse.org http://www.geocities.com/~hoseahouse/genealogy/index.html http://www.geocities.com/~fiannag/index.html

    2. Joe & Laura Schmidt
    3. Not to be redundant, but some questions came up on what is allowed to the list: Hello all! Guess it is about time to say where I stand on the subject of what I see as spam. Anything concerning Irish roots and/or genealogy in Ireland, the British Isles, or anywhere in this world is welcome to be posted to this list, as is Fianna class business. If you have a problem with a particular letter or subject that is posted to Fianna Mailing list please address it to me, do not write it to the list! (What we do not need, are 30 letters all posted complaining about one posting. That is how wars and flame wars start. ) I will review the letter and give you my opinion within 24 hours normally. I won't guarantee that you will be happy with my opinion, but it will be done according to the guidelines. Occasional humor is allowed, as long as tasteful and hopefully related to genealogy. If attacks continue on the list, instead of coming to me I will remove the offender from our list. Sorry to have to take a tough stand, but I have watched other international genealogical groups get destroyed by wars like these. We are listed on several genealogy help pages as this for a purpose: FIANNA. A mailing list for those who are researching Irish ancestry and history to discuss ways of improving their skills in searching for their Irish ancestors. Subscribers are welcome to post questions and information regarding sources and methods for Irish research. Specific questions on individual ancestors are beyond the scope of the list. Interested individuals may want to check out The Fianna: Irish Ancestry & History Research web page (http://www.geocities.com/heartland/meadows/4404/). Remember, we are here to help each other. We like to have meetings posted so anyone of you can get the information, where otherwise you might not. We like people to tell us neat sites, as that is how we put together our initial webpage. We gathered addresses and reviewed them, to see if the consensus of our group liked them and thought they were a good research tool. If you are in doubt, when writing a letter, ask me. Most things are permitted. Thanks Laura L Schmidt aka Cloudy schmidtm@3-cities.com

    2. Shaun Fitzpatrick
    3. Hello all the Fianna. I just subscribed a few days ago and have enjoyed the range of messages floating by. I am presently researching the Fitzpatrick family which descended from John Michael FITZPATRICK born circa 1835 in Ennistymon (or nearby), Co. Clare. He emmigrated to Australia and apparently had several brothers who went variously to Canada, U.S. and Australia. I'm interested in contacting any sources with antecedants from Co. Clare, especially Ennistymon or Clooney South. Regards, Shaun Fitzpatrick.

    1. [FIANNA-L] Good Customer Relations - but NOT with a Halbert's offer!
    2. Cynthia Russel
    3. For Your Information: Perhaps your Customer Relations Department or Promotions Department is not informed about the "sham" or "faux" genealogy surname books that Halbert's produces, but not only are they worthless, they are simply telephone lists of all people with the same surname (last name) and MANY of the listing are INACCURATE and OUTDATED. Unfortunately, my seventy year old aunt send me one as a birthday gift one year. I was very excited until I started to read it, and then to check on the listings of the relatives I knew - some of the addresses were 5 years old and NOT valid. I think they just keep adding the phone listings, but never removing any old listings - that way the volume grows and so does the price. You should be ashamed for being "taken" by Halberts and allowing ANY promotion from them. Those "in the know" will not look well upon Chevron. Better start checking on what you are promoting as it DOES reflect Chevron. I am just one of MANY unhappy Halbert's receivers. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Cynthia Russell Traverse City, Michigan USA e-mail: crussell@gtii.com Researching . . . . . . 1. [FIANNA-L] Irish Roots magazine
    2. Anne Lamb
    3. I just received my Irish Roots magazine yesterday, and of course I have already read all of it. But I have encountered some very enthusiastic Irish family researchers who have not yet discovered it, so I thought it might me a good idea to share some thoughts, since I highly recommend it to any serious student of Irish genealogy. Irish Roots is a quarterly published in Cork by Belgrave Publications, Belgrave Avenue, Cork, Ireland and they have a webpage at <http://www.iol.ie/~irishrts/> They make it very easy for descendants of Irish immigrants to subscribe by taking our money in almost any form. (at IR & GB 7.00, A$17, Can$17, US$14) The publisher is Tony McCarthy, with whom you will be familiar, since he is the auther of "The Irish Roots Guide". This is no beginners' periodical. The articles have some real "meat" to them, but they are well-written and very readable. This issue (#25) has a jewel of an article by Judith Eccles Wight, A.G. "It is a lonesome thing to be away from Ireland always", about the Irish emigrants who went back home. This is a subject we haven't heard much about, but I am sure each of us have a few notes in our databases stating "He/she went back to Ireland". Ms Wight included a note at the end of the article encouraging those with data on Irish repatriates to contact her. Her e-mail address is jwirish@juno.com. It doesn't say so in the magazine, but those who have researched at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City may have met her there as she is a specialist in the British Isles Department. She included an excellent bibliography. The magazine has news on Irish Genealogy events worldwide, articles on the background of surnames, social history and an enjoyable Problem Page where advice is given on research problems. I really like this magazine, and I have no connection to them except as a happy subscriber who wants to share a fine discovery. And I'd like to thanks Eileen O'Duill at the Geneaological Office for telling me about it. 3. LDS is a wonderful resource, but the information stored therein is only as good as the submitter. There is no way that the LDS could verify all the information.ALWAYS check the submitter of the material. The LDS requires anyone submitting information to attach thereto their name and snail mail address,You can get in touch with the submitter and ask how they came by the information. This works,I've do it .Some times it's good info and sometimes it's speculation or unverified family stories. Don't use anything that you have not verified(and make a note of your source). If you insert an assumption, label it as such.I wish you success.Take care, Joe Coastal CarolinaUSA PoppaJoe@webv.net

    1. [FIANNA-L] Maguire/McGuire, Cunningham, Burns/Byrne, McBride
    2. Condy47
    3. I am researching the following families: MCBRIDE-- Cranford, Parish of Kilmacrenan, Donegal, emigrated to U.S. (Philadelphia) in 1880 and thereafter. Several McBride lines in same family; names include Michael, Edward, Patrick, Ellen, Mary, and Unity. MAGUIRE/MCGUIRE-- emigrated from Ireland (possibly Donegal) approximately 1838-1843, possibly as late as 1849. Lived in PA coal region (Butler and Cass Townships, Schuylkill County) 1850 through 1900 and possibly later; some moved to Philadelphia. Common names include Dennis, Cornelius/Condy, Patrick, Thomas, Rose, Margaret, Michael, Joseph, Mary, Dominic. Earliest known ancestor is Dennis Maguire/McGuire, who married Catharine (Katie) Burns in Ireland about 1835. They had two children in Ireland-- Rosanna, born about 1835-1838 and Cornelius (Condy), born about 1837-1840. Condy served in Civil War (7th PA Cavalry). My ancestor is Dennis and Katie's daughter Margaret Maguire/McGuire, born about 1843-1849 in PA with twin brother Patrick. Margaret married Cornelius (Condy) Cunningham about 1867, probably in Schuylkill County. CUNNINGHAM-- possibly from Donegal, emigrated to PA coal regions (see above), probably before 1860. My ancestor is Cornelius/Condy, born about 1832-1840 with apparent connection to Owen Cunningham (Owen served as sponsor at christening of Condy's daughter) and possibly James and John in same area. Condy married Margaret Maguire/McGuire about 1867, probably in Schuylkill County. BURNS/BYRNE-- Ireland, possibly Donegal to PA coal regions (same as above) about 1838-1849. Catharine (Katie) Burns married Dennis Maguire/McGuire in Ireland about 1835; at least two children born in Ireland-- Rosanna, born about 1835-1838 and Cornelius (Condy), born about 1837-1840 (see Maguire/McGuire above). Please contact Condy47@aol.com if you have any suggestions or think you have any connections to these families. Good luck to everyone with your searches!
