    1. [FIANNA-L] DANIEL HIGGINS - the elusive ancestor
    2. My brick wall unfortuantely is on my primary line, the Higginses. (All the rest of my lines seem to be progrssing nicesly back to the late 1700s. ) Daniel Higgins was born in 1829 in Ireland. he married Hannah Lyons in 1849 in Waltham Mass. He then had the audacity to die in 1854 without naturalization, headstone, obituary, etc. The family lived in the area of Waltham, MA where families from Co. Galway settled, particularly families from Athenry, Co. Galway. Any suggestions for finding his hometown and family? Amy

    2. CP Williams
    3. My Grandfather Thomas GARVEY was born in Dublin in Merrion sqare in 1886. His mother Hannah GARVEY (nee FARRELL) was in service in the house as a housekeeper I believe. His father was Christopher T Garvey who owned a hansom cab also in Dublin. Christopher left Dublin at some point to look for gold in Alaska, with a friend, he did not return. His widow Hannah was told that he had been shot and killed in Alaska about 1904. Nothing was ever heard again about Christopher..Hannah and Thomas later moved to Liverpool England. I would be grateful for any information on any of the above. Thank you CPWilliams

Remember to reply to all, not just >too me, as I don't know much more than the rest of you, if that much. Okay, here is the challange: Patrick HEAGNEY b. 1833 sailed from Belfast (Antrim) and as per Naturalization Papers and became a citizen in NJ in 1860. He was married to Margaret McCarthy, and as per notes she too came from Belfast, Antrim. Griffiths has no Heagney listed in Antrim, only in Tyrone and Donegal. Patrick died in a train accident, we think, in 1886 or 1893. I am still waiting for a death certificate. He had 6 children: Francis Thomas 1862, Charles (m. Anne ?), James, Alice, Margaret (m. ? Kohler)and Elizabeth (m. ? Toman) Anyone that wishes to accept this challenge is forever in my debt! :-) Good Luck! -Susan

    2. Daniel Gavan
    3. thanks for the offer Laura, here goes ,DOMINICK GAVAN/GAVIN a farmer from either Ballina Mayo or Ballina Tipperary (he didnt say which) married an Elizabeth McCann or McGuinn (both names are on different documents) Dominick also appears as Donald on another cert ,so it is very difficult to know where to look, their son John came to Australia and was married in 1862 he was born in1812,there are a number of John Gavan/Gavins who came here both as freemen and convicts so it is most important for me to find out just where John came from so that I can identify just which one is ours. Any clues welcome. Ray Gavan. Sydney.

Hi All, Here is my problem. Catherine Nugent was born in Ireland abt 1833, county unknown . She came to Canada with her parents John Nugent and Sallie Nailley (?)on a sailing ship about 1839. According to the family story both parents and her brothers drowned. She was left alone. I don't know who raised her, but another story probably not true was that she was raised by some gypsies. She left them at age 17 and married Andre Beaulieu in St. Basile, New Brunswick, Canada. Any ideas on how to find the ship They came on, where in Ireland she was from and if the spelling of the names are correct? I haven't a clue where to start. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas. Marie

    3. I would sign up for every list I can find, look under Local Names for your county, pull up every site that anybody lists on the lists for surnames, etc. I would be willing to bet you will be shocked at how much information you can get and how helpful everyone is. I have found ancestors back to 1800's and haven't paid a dime! Good luck! (Think of it as a bargain, you enjoy it more when you get a good deal, and free is always GOOD!!) 1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Let's get things a jumping!/RE HYNDS/DUFFIN/O'HALE
    2. Fran Wolak
    3. Okay you asked for it! My great-great grandmother's name was Jane O'Hale and she was born in Napanee, Ontario in 1833. Most of what I know of her parents, Charles O'Hale and Catherine Duffin, is based on assumptions i.e. that they came to Canada from Co. Antrim around 1820. O'Hale seems to be a very rare name, when I looked through the Tithe Applotment Books at the National Library in Dublin there were only three families listed in all of Ireland - two in Antrim and one in Derry. I have never come across anyone else researching this name. I have encountered many researching Duffin but none that I can positively link to mine. The O'Hale family moved to Morris, Illinois later on, where Jane married my gggrandfather, Martin Hynds. He emigrated from County Westmeath in 1848 and he and his brother Patrick were blacksmiths so I assume this was the family profession back in Ireland - I have not had much luck going farther back in his family tree either. I have determined from the recent discussions on the list re naming patterns that his father was probably named Daniel (both Martin AND his brother Patrick named their first sons Daniel - in fact Patrick named his first TWO sons Daniel - the first one died within a year so the next one was given that name; he also died shortly after birth and then Martin subsequently used the name for his firstborn, so it seems to have been an important family name.) I have not been to the local LDS center yet but if someone with the Griffith's Valuation CD could see if there was a Daniel Hynds (or Hynes, as we have sometimes seen it spelled) in Co. Westmeath, that would be wonderful.
