    1. [FIANNA-L] What a Genealogy Mail List is!
    2. Joe & Laura Schmidt
    3. A genealogy mail list is a service provided to allow you to ask questions of others and help answer the questions asked. The list maintainer normally has just as little information on specific questions as do regular list members. The only thing the list maintainer is there to do, is to maintain mailing addresses, keep the list flowing, throw in a question to cause conversation when there is a slump in mail, get rid of flamers, and help you subscribe and unsubscribe. Maintainers are not here as a question and answer board. If you are lucky the maintainer might know something about the answer. This is not the list maintainers list, but yours! It is up to you to help each other and succeed success in your research. When you are at a wall or frustrated , we (the list) want to hear. We are here for encouragement! We are all in this together. When you don't get an answer to your question, don't be upset! Wait a week or two and repost it, you never know when someone new has joined our list, and might just know the answer. Many of us save letters of unanswered questions and ask other lists at times on behalf of you, who wrote the question. You just have to be patient. Thanks Laura

Answer: I can assure one and all, the spam you received did not come through the Fianna List. If it would have the subject line Fianna-L would have been on it too. RootsWeb has an excellant spam filter. But Tim is always looking for new addresses to add to his filter. If you still have the letter that you received, please forward it to me, NOT THE LIST, and I will forward it to Tim. Do NOT cut and paste, but forward it on, we need all the garbage that comes attached up by the address. That mail would have come through your ISP or another mailing service you might be a member of, just not RootsWeb. Laura schmidtm@3-cities.com

    2. futch.carberry
    3. Bill, thank you for the background on memorials/deeds. It has significance to me since I was examining the grantor index books in the Registry of Deeds in February when I was in Dublin. I also looked at some of the books sorted by locality and saw what must have been the memorials, which were fairly difficult for me to read (Gothic German script is harder). I have just joined the FIANNA list, so I don't know what your questions have been. On the handful of newsgroups I read everyday, I occasionally post a question and many times I get no response. However, twice now in about a year, I have gotten excerpts of private diaries which were very meaningful for my family history. I never would have known that about the life of that period and the mentions of my family without those individuals stopping to type it all and send it to me. So, a few jewels for a lot of effort - it does mirror regular gen. research, doesn't it? Chin up! Sharon Carberry Researching Carberry, Donnellan, Hehir, Tynan, Connell, and Cuneen

    3. Not I. Have you posted to any of the lists that are connected with newsgroups, or to a newsgroup? That seems to be where the slime and spam meisters gather names/email addys. Some of that stuff arrives every time I post that the FIANNA pages are updated, and then none until I make another such post (to soc.xxxxxxxx or Genire and Genbrit) Doesn't happen from Ireland-L or FIANNA-L or IrelandGenWeb-L because they are "closed", i.e. email only, to subscribers only, and therefore not available to the scummy ones.... Peace. 1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Registry of Deeds
    2. Hi Ellen John Grenham in his book TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS says the following: After a deed had been signed and witnessed one of the parties had a copy know as a Memorial made, signed it and had it witnessed by two people, at least one of whom had been a witness to the original. The Memorial was then sworn before a Justice of the Peace, as a faithful copy of the Original and sent to the Registry. Here it was transcribed into a large Manuscript Volume and indexed. The original [copy] was was retained and stored and these are all still preserved in the valuts of the Registry. I have been sent a few copies by others and they are copies of the Original[copies] and are in much better shape than the M/F copies of the MSS. Volunes. The Irish use the PUNT and it is somewhat lower than the English Pound. Today's quote is British Pound 1.63872 to the US $ Irish Punt 1.41898 to US $ Hope this helps - I have rec'd no answer to my questions from this list or the IRELAND-L@rootsweb.com List. Bill

    3. Ray This came my way and I know you have a home page. It might have some thought provoking ideas in it for you. I am off to Adelaide again tomorrow afternoon. It is a long weekend here. Back Monday. The weather has been brilliant the last few days. We had 19 yesterday. Considering winter has started it is great. No doubt it will make up for it soon. HAd a front end alignment yesterday. Whoever did the job before stuffed it up. The front tyres were scrubbing. One had developed a couple of noisy flat spots. Apart from that it seems OK. Getting 6 kilometers per litre on LPG around town at the moment which is good. Must go am arguing with the neighbour behind about new fences.
