    3. I have a question that I hope someone can answer for me.... What is the difference between JOYCE and JOICE? In looking at census of yrs 1830-40-50 I find the spelling every 10 yrs as JOICE..however we spell it JOYCE. Is there anything different about it such as maby the area in Ireland they may have come from or anything....???? I was just wondering about it Thanks Sharon TX

    3. If anyone has a copy or has access to a copy of the book "Irish Surnames" by Wolf, would you kindly check out the surname GAVAGAN for me? I've been pounding away at this for three years and have come up empty. Any tidbit at all would be welcome. I don't know what name it originally came from or is most closely linked to; I don't know its ancient name, and I don't know from which county in Ireland it sprang. In short, I know nothing. Any information would be wonderful. "Irish Surnames" is a recent suggestion from an online friend. Thank you. Fran Weeks

    3. Registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845 in Ireland. Registration of births, marriages and deaths, regardless of religion, began January 1, 1864. The obligation to register these events rested on the public and failure to do so carried hefty fines. Certificates for births, marriages and deaths for all of Ireland until 1922 are housed in Dublin. Belfast has the records for Northern Ireland from 1922 to present. Clues to family history and genealogy are found in the civil records. The occupation or title give clues to the family’s lifestyle. The family historian may also use occupational clues to find additional information, either in general or specific to the family. Guild records, apprenticeship records, military regimental records, land records, borough records, and other sources may be useful. Probate, peerage books, and land records are sources if there is a title involved. If the birth or death occurred in the workhouse look for records under the Irish Poor Law. Birth certificates include the date and place of birth; the name; the sex; the name, surname and residence of the father; the name, surname, maiden surname of the mother; the rank, profession or occupation of the father; and the name and qualifications of the informant, usually a family member. A given name was not obligatory, so some entries are Kelly, Male or Clarke, Female. The FHLC holds microfilm copies of the index and certificates for 1864-1955. Marriage certificates include the date and place of marriage; groom’s name, age, marital status, occupation or title, and residence; bride’s name, marital status, age, occupation or title, and residence. The names of the fathers of both parties and their occupations or titles are given which makes them particularly relevant to genealogy. The church and the names of two witnesses are also listed. Witnesses to the marriage are commonly family members and may add clues to family linkages. Full age indicates that the person was at least 21 years old. Death records include date and place of death; the person’s name at the time of death (no maiden name), age, occupation or title, and residence; and cause of death. The informant’s name, residence, and qualifications to give the information are given. The names of the parents or spouse are not included. The FHLC holds the Index for 1864-1921. Some of all three categories simply went unregistered. It is impossible to be sure how much is not there, since the thoroughness of local registration depended very much on local conditions and on the individuals responsible, but experience in crosschecking from other sources such as parish and census records suggests that as much as 10 to 15 per cent of marriages and births simply do not appear in the registers. 1. [FIANNA-L] Funeral Homes & home addresses in Brooklyn or NY area
    2. Maureen Teachman
    3. Hello again, Researching OBRIEN (OBRIAN) and HARDING in Brooklyn and perhaps elsewhere. That great staff at Holy Cross Cemetery was kind enough to send me the information about the Funeral Homes that made the arrangements for my relatives. Does anyone know anything about them. Are they still in business? What part of probably Brooklyn were they located? Perhaps this will give me some direction when I am searching for my elusive ancestors. They are only listed begining with the 1926burial of my uncles Charles HARDING (1907-1926) - Daington Funeral Home - no location listed William HARDING (1903-1951) -J. Kearns Funeral Home (maybe Brooklyn) my grandmother Ann HARDING (1874-1955) - W. A. Martin Funeral Home -location unknown My grandmother was in Goldwater Memorial Hospital onwhat I believe may have been known as Welfare Island (anyone know anything about this island or hospital/?nursing home perhaps) I believe my grandmother lived at the following addresses but I am not sure during which years: 146 East 31 Street 311 State Street, Brooklyn (perhaps with her son William HARDING (1903-1951) 724 Franklin Avenue (perhaps here with grand daughter (Nancy HARDING Bankowski) Are these addresses of any help in my genealogy searches? Nancy Bankowski is deceased and her daughter in law thinks this is correct. I feel I should know more about Brooklyn, but although I was born there, I moved when I was 10 years old to the "suburbs". Thanks Maureen Teachman mteach@bigfoot.com

    3. I you are from a CRONIN, LYNCH, or SULLIVAN family, perhaps you would be willing to help me if you are able. My gggrandfather, MICHAEL LYNCH, married a lady named ELLEN ???? back in Ireland. Since I don't know her maiden name, my Ellen could be the one who, on February 8, 1835, in Ardfert, Kerry, was Michael's bride. On the other hand, on March 28, 1835, in Kilcumin Parrish, Kerry, ELLEN SULLIVAN and MICHAEL LYNCH presented their daughter, Mary, to be christened. Either one could be my Ellen; or, for that matter, neither might be. I'd certainly love to hear from anyone with information, leads, or suggestions. Many thanks for your interest. Fran Weeks

    3. Linda-am I still subscribed on one of my addresses? Hope so-I unsubscribed on the Scotch-Irish group. I recd a letter from The Kildare Heritage & Genealogy Co, Kildare Co Library, Newbridge, Co Kildare, Ireland. Their web page is: http://kildare.ie/library/KildareHeritage/index.htm havent checked it out yet. Someone told me they had their info organized, etc, so I wrote, their response: I have checked thru your file and the no of letters you have written over the years.(she is talking about 30 yrs)-the situation has not changed significantly. the parish records for Suncroft are complete..nothing new, etc. there is a list of charges at the bottom of the letter: one record, birth, marriage, death L10, one family: births L25, Preliminary search L15- those are apparently pounds but Irish using something different now-punts? Anyway the Suncroft Parish records where our Byrne, Kelly families lived started with 1805- and they came to san Francisco 1867-so that leaves lots of blanks. Ellen Byrne

    3. Could it be Marso or Marseau ? That is my gggrandmother's maiden name and it is quite rare. However, on the FamilyTreemaker site, there is the home page devoted to the descendants of Jean Marseau, her father, of Luxembourg, near the current-day border with Belgium. She and her brother Frank came over in the 1840s. She stayed in New York but most of her brother's family went on to Wisconsin and changed to name to Marson, then Morson when some moved to Minnesota. We are trying to locate Frank's two oldest girls, who apparently married before the move to Wisconsin. Their names are Margaret and Elizabeth, born 1835 and 1837. All were Catholics. Sharon Carberry

    3. I read your message to Rob Forrest and feel compelled to send you greetings. My family tends to leave this world from cancer principally, by the age of 55 or 60. I am not at that age yet, but have had the comfort of a death experience from which I was brought back. Some of my relatives died lingering deaths, while doctors tried this and that, and that is a pity. The great beyond is peaceful and lovely. Since then I have not understood why we mortals try so hard to avoid it. Whatever is in your future, I hope you can maintain your faith. It is a great and gracious God who awaits us. Sharon C.
