    3. The most useful surviving lists are those made in the country of arrival, not of departure. National Archives staff in Washington. DC, will only search the immigration passenger lists up to 1954 if an inquirer can give the full names and ages of the passenger and of accompanying passengers, the port of entry, the vessel, and exact date of arrival. Requests for searches should be made on NATF Form 81, Order for Copies of Ship Passenger Arrival Records. You can do-it-yourself at the local Family History Centers, especially on the unindexed New York lists. The FHL has acquired 99% of National Archives passenger records. Not all persons who entered the United States appear on the available passenger lists. Some lists were lost. Some ship captains probably did not record all passengers on the lists for one reason or another. Indexers do not always spell names correctly, often because the original version of the name was illegible. Since no index is 100% accurate, the only way to be certain whether or not a name is in the actual record is to search the record itself. Go to the following for a Guide to Research: Immigration and Ship Passengers Lists http://home.att.net/~arnielang/shipgide.html Here is the url for The National Archives, with links to information available on all ports and the appropriate microfilm series. http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/immigrant/immpass.html#portindex Here are the Family History Library Catalog numbers. 1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Surnames
    2. Ellen Naliboff
    3. Matheson’s Special Report on Surnames of Ireland shows surnames with five or more entries in the birth indexes of 1890, and the main counties in which they were found. The birth rate was 1:44 at that time so you can estimate the number of people of the name at that time. The great value of Matheson's report is that it indicates how common a particular surname is countrywide, provincially and also within a county. The distribution of surnames has not changed significantly since the publication of the Report - so it is reasonable to presume the same pattern prior to 1890. FERGUS is principally found in Mayo, Ellen

    1. [FIANNA-L] List of Alien Passengers by J.B. Monroe
    2. LaNaye Hennen
    3. Hi, Hope someone can help me. A passenger and immigrants index lists Dennis Hurley (DOB: 09/15/1833) arriving in Boston in 1847. He originated from County Cork. It also shows Mary Higgins (DOB: 07/15/1838) arriving in Boston in 1850. She was supposed to be from Roscommon. The source material listed was The List of Alien Passengers by J.B. Monroe. Does anyone have access to this book and be willing to do a lookup for me? This book is out of print and we don't have much for local libraries (genealogy wise). I will also check with the FHC when I can get there. I will also be checking the FHC for Boston arrivals, but I am curious to see if this book contains any other information. Thanks alot. LaNaye

    1. [FIANNA-L] GAVAGAN/HEVICAN
    2. jim murphy
    3. My Great Grandmother is a HEVICAN. I have been fortunate to have found a Hevican living in Co. Roscommon. While we have not yet made positive connection we are still researching. I would like to quote from a letter I received from her: There is an item of interest the you may be unaware of, concerning the name "Hevican". The real name is HEVAGHAN. There are three names entered on the surnames of Ireland. O'Hevican, O'Havican, and O'Hevaghan. The Irish for this name is O'Leimheachain, when angelicized becomes "Hevaghan". Now, in the pre-famine times, up to 80% of Irish were illiterate. So when people with the proper name (O'Leimheachain) filled in census forms. it had to be in English. If a family entered "Hevican", then that name stayed with them in english terms. So any family with the Hevican name are almost certained to be related, according to family names of Ireland. published in 1978 by E. Maclysaght. Does sense? Jim Murphy <jimlilmurphy@simflex.com>
