    3. Rosemarie: I noticed your message mentioning St. Catherines, Dublin. My grandfather, William MURPHY, was born there in 1861. If you run across any information on this area, I'd appreciate knowing about it. I'll do the same for you. --Aileen -----Original Message----- From: mdaly <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, March 18, 1999 2:04 AM Subject: [FIANNA-L] Gore >Hi I am researching the name GORE. 1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Hotel Biltmore,NY-Question
    2. Maureen Hauge
    3. Desiree, Oh Yes, I remember the Biltmore. I don't remember if it was for dining or dancing, but it was at Madison Ave and 43rd St. It is not listed in any current NYC references that I have, but that can be expected. nearly all the hotels have changed names. I have looked at the NY AAA Guide but it doesn't have any hotel shown at that location. That doesn't mean that there isn;t one there only that they do not list it for bookings. If memory serves me correctly, the Biltmore was oriented toward business clients rather than tourists. All this can be wrong of course. My dating and dining days were in the late forties and fifties, rather than the thirties. To further confuse the issue, the Lexington Ave address you have, at about 47th St, could be the central management office for the hotel chain. (I'm not helping much, am I?) I will be in NYC in May and will difinitely be checking out Grand Central Station to see it's new look. It is only a block from the old Biltmore location, so I'll take a look. If you haven't found your answer by mid or late July, send me an email and i'll let you know my findings. 3. Do a frequency and distribution study by using Matheson’s Special Report on Surnames of Ireland which shows surnames with five or more entries in the birth indexes of 1890, and the main counties in which they were found. The birth rate was 1:44 at that time so you can estimate the number of people of the name at that time. The great value of Matheson's report is that it indicates how common a particular surname is countrywide, provincially and also in a county. The distribution of surnames has not changed significantly since the publication of the Report - so it is reasonable to presume the same pattern prior to 1890. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irish/ir-names/math-nam.htm Ellen

    1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Hotel Biltmore,NY-Question
    2. It sure rings a bell, but it no longer exists. This is the hotel of note in Fitzgerald's novels, "Meet you under the clock", which is the little clock on top of the entrance to the lobby cocktail lounge. It also is part of Frank McCourt's new book, his first job after coming back to the USA in the 1940. I recall it as a midshipman at Columbia during WWII, where we met folks when we got leave on Saturday PMs. Tom Foley

The HEART symbolizes love, life's finest impulse. From it, generosity and compassion flow. The HANDS of friendship are clasped around the heart in a gesture of giving. As they cradle the heart gently, the hands are both protective and strong, like true friendship. The CROWN is symbolic of loyalty. It represents the reward of love, the highest achievement the human spirit has yet accomplished. To give the Claddagh is to forge the hands of love, friendship, and loyalty forever. -jeanne
