    3. Mary Ellen, Just a friendly note, in case you aren't aware of it. When you type in all caps it as if you are yelling at someone. I know it is much easier to type that way, but its "netiquette". 2. Hi! I see you are looking for Murphy in upper Canada. I helped a friend of mine to look up Murphy in New Foundland. However she has since died of Lew Gerigs disease. I didn't get very far because she took a turn for the worse before I finished. But what I did learn was John Francis Murphy b. about 1889 married Bridget Ellen Costello 9 Feb. 1918. She thought that he migrated from Ireland during the potatoe famine but had idea from what part of Ireland. You probably have no link but thought it might be a stab in the dark. However I'm looking for Glosheens (changed their names to Green) who left CO. Roscommon around the 1850's. Have no idea where to look for them. There were 2 boys and one sister; James, Patrick and Catherine. Eileen

    3. Hello All: One of our friends on this Fianna List asked about Ancestry.com Not to beat the subject to death, but my paid membership has been very helpful to me, and I use almost all of the Genealogy sites available; I plan to renew. Ancestry.com does have a quarterly membership (3 Mo.) avail for $19.95. Their standard 1 yr membership is available at $59.95 and includes some special values. Just go to http://www.ancestry.com Select Membership Options. You will see various options/plans available. 2. I would suggest subscribing to Ancestry for a month. I think you can do this. I found it helpful because it tells you which census years you need to check. It also has PERSI which indexes genealogy periodicals and society newsletters. I am still checking out all the articles that came up on searches. Good luck! Linda

    2. Actually the word is in the Bible because I checked once when I read Watts book. I'll have to check the book it was in, I don't remember the verse, but I will look it up for you. It is in the old testament. Actually the word itself was common in the times of the King James Bible and wasn't considered offensive then. Colleen Kirby

    1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Irish Army in 1929???
    2. (Oh well I just clicked on an empty page .) Anyway about the ongoing battles of the Irish and their neighbors to the east. My dear grandfather who I have been spending so much time working on of late was one of the worst. He not only was on the run from the British when he left Ireland by the time he died he was mad at the Irish for splitting the country in two. It's like that story by Alan Watts (the Episcopalean priest turned Zen philosopher) talking about his devout uncle who was devout when it came to his Bible...... until he found the word "pissed" in it, whereupon he never read it again. 1. [FIANNA-L] Should I buy.., sign up for.. order..?
    2. As a newbie I was wondering about a few things and would like your input. Is Ancestry.Com worth joining , paying the money? And Cyndies list the book ,, is it worth buying? Have these resources helped you in your researches.? Also any magazines are there any musts? I have several trains going at once. Primarily am working on my fathers roots via Massachusetts (Clinton, Worcestor Co., Leominster) from Louisbourgh, County Mayo Ireland; Kirbys, Fergusons etc. My cousin is doing most of the work on my mother's side of the family which is a blessing. My mother's surname is Martin. I recently learned how to operate this horse and buggy computer so I will probably have to learn..... much more. I'm primarily interested in finding out what is worth spending money for. I'm not rich. If the resource is worth the money then ok.!

    1. [FIANNA-L] Re the Escaping Irishman has indeed been caught
    2. I want to thank everyone who responded to my query. I have indeed finally set foot in Ireland geneaologically(Would love to go there someday). And for anyone else who may be looking for related topics I will give the information to all. Patrick Henry Kirby (Kerby in the Irish records) was born Feb.1, 1872 in Louisbourgh N1, Mayo, Ireland. His father is listed as John Kerby. His mother is listed as Honor Fergus. On Patrick's death certificate in Massachusetts they were listed as John Kirby and Honora Ferguson. The FHL Number is 255846; note number is 734. Now one more question. What does N1 after Louisbourgh stand for? and what is FHL? I wish I could even express how I feel. It's as if I had just stepped on the ground there in Ireland for the first time.

Incidentally Griffiths Valuation lists 27 Kirby surnames in the Co.Mayo so it may be a start. Good Luck ..If you need any more help get back to me.
