    1. Re: [FIANNA-L] Military Personnel Records - RECEIVED
    2. Desiree When a person is lost at sea and finally declared dead, which in this case was probably what happened. That person recieves a military funeral and there will be a headstone over his gravesite and it will only be for that one person. The U.S. does not have mass burials. When a persons body is not recovered he still gets his allocated space as though he was there. You should be able to get a location for that gravesite. It may be in the Phillipines but I would venture to say that you will find that grave site in Hawaii. Most of those who were lost in the Phillipine waters are in Hawaii. I hope this helps. Larry

    1. [FIANNA-L] Military Personnel Records - RECEIVED
    2. I just received 2 military personnel records on some family members, Julius J. MILLER and Thomas M. WABOLIS. I have waited almost one year for a response so please don't give up hope. I have a question regarding Julius' form. Julius was last known to be aboard the Hellship Oryoku Maru when it was strafed by the US Navy on Dec 15, 1944 in the Philippines. As far as we knew, he was MIA. I know his name is on a wall in memorium at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Republic of the Philippines (Makati City). Now here is my question, Julius is listed as Killed in Action and not Missing in Action as we thought. Does this mean they found a body and he is officially buried there because they found a body, or does it mean that there was a mass burial for all those not found??? What is the distinction between MIA and KIA in this situation? I know it may seem obvious but clarification, especially for his living family members would be wonderful! Thank you to anyone who can help! Desiree

    1. [FIANNA-L] Newbie info - Ellen's message
    2. Beth Nikles
    3. Hi All: Just wanted to thank ELLEN for posting her response to our List, in response to an query from Julia Moss, I believe. No matter how many times we see and read questions asked and info/responses posted pertaining to "Newbie's" on the List, it seems they all serve as a reminder/refresher to us one and all. Each one of us were just beginners @ one time and it IS very confusing/frustrating and overwhelming when you first begin to search....and sometimes the same applies no matter how long you've been at this! I only wish that I knew of a site where I could post my own story of how the wonderful volunteers on the internet provided information of over 750 of my COSTELLO ancestors....and much to my joy....LIVING cousins, too...and we are communicating with each other and sharing our joys of continuing discoveries. So-o-o-o-o, Hope springs eternal..and DO NOT GIVE UP...EVER!! That proverbial rainbow CAN land right in your own lap!! Best of luck to all fellow Fianna List-ers in their (our) continuing searches!! 1. [FIANNA-L] Response to "Question" about research
    2. Ellen Naliboff
    3. Julie Moss, your mail kept bouncing back so I am posting to the list. FIANNA has a good Study Guide to Research in Irish Records http://www.rootsweb.com/~fianna/guide/ The Family History Library has a Research Guide which you can buy for less than a dollar. If you still have questions after reading these, get back with me. There is so much to learn about doing Irish research that it can seem overwhelming and confusing as practically nothing that you already know applies! The Family History Library Catalog (familysearch.org) has extensive holdings. You can now access the Library Catalog online at: http://32.96.111.11/Search/searchcatalog.asp to get there from the main page: Then go to "Family History Library Catalog"to get there from the main page: go to the column on the left and click on "Browse Categories" Then go to "Libraries" Then go to "Family History Library Catalog" Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/using.htm for further information. There are Family History Centers scattered throughout the world, located in the LDS meeting-houses. The FHCs are generally listed in the local phonebook under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Each center has its own phone number. In some communities, Family Search is in the local public library. No charge is made for using the resources at the local FHC except for a rental fee for microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake. No proselytizing is allowed in the FHC. http://www.genhomepage.com/FHC/fhc.html This is a listing of LDS Family History Centers generated from data sent by the Family History Center address submission form. The listing is nowhere near complete. Ellen

    1. [FIANNA-L] Tombstones of the Omey - Co Tyrone, some photos available
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. As many of you know, I am willing to do surname lookups in Bill McGrew's book, "Tombstones of the Omey". It is a compilation of the tombstone listings for 15 graveyards transcribed within a five mile radius of Omagh, Co Tyrone (1688-1900). The book is published by the Omagh Chapter of the NIFHS (North of Ireland Family History Society). I am an associate member of the society. During my recent trip I was privileged to attend 3 branch meetings, as I am an Associate Member. I volunteer to look up SURNAMES ONLY in this important contribution to Ulster genealogy. If you wish to know if there is a listing for a surname you are researching please title the Subject line as follows: Subject: Lookup - "Omey" - SURNAME(s)> (you wish to have searched, alphabetized and in CAPTIALS please) Do NOT ask me for additional information as I ethically think that if one wishes more information each of us should be purchasing the book. This will help to support the on-going work of the NIFHS to add to the body of research in Northern Ireland. I am grateful there is such a voluntary non-profit organization which depends upon the support of those who are interested in Ulster genealogy. I will ignore replying to requests for additional information. I am always saddened when a few people "spoil" the efforts of time and energy for volunteer requests. Now to the meat of the information! The book is available through the NIFHS,North of Ireland Family History Society, website http://www.mni.co.uk/nifhs The cost in U.S. funds is approximately $18.50 which includes the postage. The book is not indexed as to surnames. I have to search through all 15 graveyard listings to find surnames. This is its only short-coming. I am helping the NIFHS index the book and hopefully the index will be available in the future and will be included in the next printing of the book. The book is selling well and apparently there will be a need for a reprint soon, which hopefully will include the index I am working on. The book is wonderfully organized in alphabetical order by graveyard, listing tombstones bearing inscriptions, many with multiple names inscribed. In addition there are memorial stones included, as I discovered when researching my family surname. I had thought that the listing in the book meant that my possible g-g-g-g-g-grandparents were buried in Cappagh Cemetery. However, after searching through all of the Record Books for Cappagh Church I discovered that there is no listing for their burial. Apparently, they are buried in another place, perhaps Dunmullan Cemetery which was the "Old" Cappagh Cemetery. Each graveyard is listed with locations by Ordnance Survey sheets and designations. The book includes both Protestant and Roman Catholic listings along with a brief explanation and history of each church. There is either a black and white photo or drawing of the cemetery and/or church. I had hoped to photograph all of the 15 graveyards on my last trip to Omagh, but only accomplished photographing 4 of them. I am willing to send jpeg format photos via the Internet of Cappagh, Dunmullan, Edenderry, and St. Mary's RC of Killyclogher. Please send your request to me directly and not to the list. 2. Flannery, Sean
    3. First let me apologize for my reply that the "British have never left Ireland". It was meant as an off the cuff reply to a simple remark "The British left Ireland in 1922". There was no further information with that remark. I also apologize for my tardy response. A week away proved interesting. And yes the Brits in Ireland is genealogy related. Many people are tracing both Irish/British roots. It was also not, I repeat not an attack on Ellen Nabiloff. She appears quite competent and has helped many others with her posts. To Ellen, I apologize. To any others who would like to challenge my statement that the British are indeed still firmly entrenched in the Irish countryside, politics and culture, please email me privately. I hope this does not in any way jeopardize the ongoing peace process currently underway in Ireland. Again to any I offended, I apologize. Sean Flannery New Jersey USA

    3. The single most important item of information for Irish family history research is a precise place of origin, and the most important tool in identifying Irish placenames is the 1851 Townlands Index. They've altered their site recently, this is the new URL for any Townland questions http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/placename/index.cfm Irish Ancestors; Placenames Irish Genealogical Society International has Townland maps. Contact Beth Mullinax, PO Box 16069, St Paul MN 55115 for details. Include a SASE. Library of Congress, Photoduplication, Washington DC also has the maps. Ellen

    3. Hi Eileen: Do NOT know if we are related or have MURPHYs in common, AS, ALL I know abt "my" MURPHY is: Michael "Mick" MURPHY and wife, Brigid/Bridget DEVINE are parents of Emily MURPHY who m. John COSTELLO. Emily was baptized/married at St Anthony's RC Church, Centreville (do not know WHICH of the many Centrevilles in CAN this was as yet - am trying to locate a Catholic Church list by town/Co/Province??) John COSTELLO/Emily MURPHY COSTELLO were my paternal grandparents. John COSTELLO was b 1865, d. 1926 Upper Canada (now Horton Twp, Renfrew Co, ONT, CAN). Both Emily and John buried private Costello Family Cemetery Horton Twp. Most of my COSTELLO family desc from Thomas COSTELLO/Mary QUILTER COSTELLO, m. 1821 Ireland, traveled from Trienereaugh, Duagh, Co Kerry IRE in 1825> Ottowa, then Perth, then Upper Canada (Horton Twp, Renf,Ont) to settle there abt 1827-28. Their Son Francis "Frank" COSTELLO m. Agnes CARNEY, Their son John COSTELLO, above. Sorry so limited on my Paternal Grandmother MURPHY; Just begun to do research on her; she was b. 1875, d. 1937. She/John were parents of, not nec in this order, John, Nora, Gertrude, Theresa, Florence, Charles James Arthur MURPHY Joseph (My Dad)=some long name!!, Mary, Thomas. I know there was an ALICE MURPHY, prob Emily's sister. Also believe there was another female sibling of Emily's. Anything sound familiar. Do not know WHERE in Ireland, these MURPHYs of mine come from....but I am on the hunt...My COSTELLOs are well documented/researched to nth degree and on record by Prof Patrick "Paddy" Waldron of Trinity College, Dublin Univ, Dublin, Ireland. Know so little abt my GrandMOTHERs Murphy,Quilter and Carney!! Look fwd to hearing from you. 1. [FIANNA-L] Typing in Capitals
    2. Cynthia N. Russell
    3. >Just a friendly note, in case you aren't aware of it. When you type in all caps it as if you are yelling at someone. I know it is much easier to type that way, but it's "netiquette". This indeed is a friendly note, but, it reminds me of a cousin. He and I had written back and forth on the Internet for quite a while before meeting at a family reunion. He always typed in capitals, and I wondered why. Well, I found out - this gentleman (who is a gentle man) had either suffered a stroke or had some time of impairment which allowed him to type with only one hand. Now, I think of that whenever I see all capitals . . . it is quite a lengthy process to type with only one hand and include capitals or accents, etc. Since the Internet is a one dimensional communication tool, it is difficult to know everyone's circumstances, but I never considered the above until meeting my cousin and watching him show me some genealogy on his PC. It is certainly a much slower process to communicate than as I type, with the use of all ten fingers. Let's all keep this in mind, just in case. And, of course it is wonderful to explain netiquette to newbies or those who just do not know. Learning more about life as I travel along on the journey, Cynthia
