In 1842, the 38-year-old skipper sailed the ship Westchester from Liverpool, England, and affirmed the following cargo manifest on his arrival April 4. The circumstances surrounding Watsons death in Panama are unknown. Panama was then part of Colombia. The captain may also have made a couple of voyages from England to Tasmania in 1851 and 1852, transporting prisoners. The U.S. Martime Commission must have considered Watson Ferris a sailor of considerable repute. The ancestry traces back to Jeffery Ferris, the original Ferris in the New World. And from Jeffery I've got the Ferris line going back to Henri de Ferrieres, William the Conqueror's master of horse in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, another 25 generations. I have tons more data on all of that if you're interested. And if you happen to have anything more on these Ferris folks, I'd sure appreciate it, particularly any further info you might have on Captain Watson Ferris. He sounds like quite a character.
