Hi, I am looking for the parents and siblings of Betsey Ferris who married Manus Murray on 24 Dec 1818. She was born 8 May 1793 amd died 12 June 1869 in Wisconsin. Her first child, Persis Murray, was born in Stockholm, St. Lawrence, New York. Ancestral file, LDS, also has Betsey born in Stockholm, but I visited there several years ago and the first birth in that community was in 1804.......Manus and Betsey then lived in Sudbury, Rutland, Vt where all other 8 children were born. Recently I received an email from a Ferris researcher who had new information to share, but my system went down and I can't retrieve her message. If you are there, please let me know....... I wonder if Betsey is related to the Ferris family who lived around Lake Champlain, Peter father, sons John, Squire and Peter...... Thanks for helping.... MAE

Hi Herb, Do you know the identity of William H FERRIS's parents or the location of his birth? I have a William H FERRIS who is the son of Leonard & Catherine [maiden name unknown to me] FERRIS, Jr. My William H is listed as the 4 year old child of this couple in the 1850 Wayne Co., NY Census. The father, Leonard FERRIS, Jr died in 1852 and I have been unable to locate the widow Catherine FERRIS or the son William H FERRIS in later census's in western NY--have no idea where they went or what became of them. Leonard FERRIS, Jr would have been born abt 1814/16 in Dutchess County, NY and migrated to western NY as a child with his parents and multiple siblings. Mary Sorensen

In 1842, the 38-year-old skipper sailed the ship Westchester from Liverpool, England, and affirmed the following cargo manifest on his arrival April 4. I, Watson Ferris, master of Ship Westchester do solemnly, sincerely, and truly affirm that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collections District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of said Westchester at Liverpool, England. from which Port said Ship has now arrived; and that on the said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of eachduring the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country to which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant. So help me God. The circumstances surrounding Watsons death in Panama are unknown. Panama was then part of Colombia. The captain may also have made a couple of voyages from England to Tasmania in 1851 and 1852, transporting prisoners. The U.S. Martime Commission must have considered Watson Ferris a sailor of considerable repute. During the Second World War, the commission had a ship built for the merchant marine named in his honor. The S.S. Watson Ferris survived the war, but what became of the vessel is unknown. The ancestry traces back to Jeffery Ferris, the original Ferris in the New World. And from Jeffery I've got the Ferris line going back to Henri de Ferrieres, William the Conqueror's master of horse in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, another 25 generations. I have tons more data on all of that if you're interested. And if you happen to have anything more on these Ferris folks, I'd sure appreciate it, particularly any further info you might have on Captain Watson Ferris. He sounds like quite a character. Rootsweb has announced a new service whereby any posts to the GenConnect boards can now be "gatewayed" to mailing lists. When a board is gatewayed to a mailing list, every message posted to the GenConnect board will be forwarded to the corresponding mailing list. The message sent to the list will contain the URL of the specific post to allow the list subscribers to respond directly to the message. In this manner, gatewaying will enable more effective communication between the mailing lists and the GC boards. The messages from the GenConnect board will be forwarded with the prefix: [GenConnect] so you can distinguish them better. If you want to delete, fine, but with the very slight increase in messages received, I feel this will be a great way to find something you might have otherwise missed. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me directly at wrabb@earthlink.net. Thanks! Wanda Rabb
