After my older cousin in Ohio asked me about "Easter Houses" that her Mother, Martha, nee Clarke, mentioned when speaking of her childhood in Fermanagh, got me wondering if other families had that tradition in their families. Martha, was the Second oldest of 12 children born to Samuel and Margaret J Clarke (nee Kidd of Kilrea), had gone to the USA with two brothers, Samuel and Thomas, and her sister Caroline (Carry). My late mother, Alice, was the youngest of Martha's 11 siblings, and was always up for a game. She showed us how her and her siblings used to build a tented Easter House, with a stone 'Fireplace', where we boiled eggs and made Toast over the Turf fire, while My parents milked the Cows. No toast ever teased like that made by holding a slice of plain loaf bread in front of a peat fire, on a long handled wire 'Fork'. It's smoky flavour and the hand churned Butter, Boiled Eggs, yes plural, and a mug of smoky tea on Easter Sunday morning while seated on boards propped upon two big Sandstones. Absolutely fabulous! Yes I in my turn, showed my late daughter how it was done and the excitement of the Easter House shone in her beautiful green eyes! Agh Memories! TG for them! Viola Sent from my iPad

Dear Vi, Another lovely story from your wonderful childhood! Not a lot of tradition in Australia, however in our home Midnight Mass was always obligatory for Easter Service - Easter High Mass sung in the Latin, the iconic perfume of incense - absolutely beautiful! I still thrill to Gregorian Chants, and playing them on CD's brings back all the memories. Then Easter eggs in the morning via the Bunny who always somehow managed to eat the carrot I left out on the nest for him; and roast dinner (at lunch) usually chicken and all the trimmings - yummy. Unlike Christmas, not too hot thus one could appreciate a huge hot feast during the daytime. Kindly, Dee. -----Original Message----- From: Viola Wiggins [mailto:vmaw3434@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, 9 April 2018 12:00 AM To: Fermanagh-Gold Subject: FERMANAGH-GOLDEaster Houses FERMANAGH-GOLD@rootsweb.com After my older cousin in Ohio asked me about "Easter Houses" that her Mother, Martha, nee Clarke, mentioned when speaking of her childhood in Fermanagh, got me wondering if other families had that tradition in their families. <snip> To post a message to the Fermanagh-Gold mailing list, send an email to Fermanagh-Gold@rootsweb.com. ________________________________________ --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
