I have been doing my due diligence in researching my HOWE and DALY folks in Fermanagh and can use a little help: 1. I have discovered that many of the townlands begin with the suffix Drum… (In my case: Drumsillagh and Drumderg) Does that translate to something specific? 2. In the census records, there is a column: DED What that stand for? 3. I am still looking for connections to my immigrant HOWE family to Troy, New York here in the U.S. The Mother of those here was apparently Elizabeth (Bessie) ARMSTRONG. The father may have been Ralph HOWE, but I have only one reference claiming that. One sister: Mary Jane married William Alexander MCVITY AND James PERRY; Second sister Eliza married Robert CAMPBELL; Third sister Anne remained in Ireland and married William DALY their daughter Elizabeth came to the U.S. in 1867 and married Alfred HOWES; Brother: James did not marry; Second brother John married Mary (?); Third brother Thomas (My GGGrandfather ) married Frances Jane LOOMIS in Troy. All were born in Ireland between 1817 and 1831 seem to have arrived in the late 1840’s and married in Troy. If there is anyone out there with ARMSTRONG, DALY, or HOWE knowledge, I would appreciate a note. I can supply more information on the DALYs who were in Fermanagh at least until the 1911 census. 1) Drum means drumlin/ridge/hillock. Drumsillagh means drumlin of the sallys (williows). Drumderg is probably the red hill/drumlin/ridge. Some good resources for townlands are: http://www.placenamesni.org/ https://www.logainm.ie/en/ https://www.townlands.ie/ 2) DED's are District Electoral Division's and are a clusters/groups of townlands, usually they are named after one of the biggest or central townland in the cluster. 3) What area do you think they are from? Bill, There used to be a STANSFIELD a Photographer in Enniskillen, in the 1940s. If you know the Townland check the c1828 Tithe Records (a tax imposed by the Established Church. Literally 1/10th.) land was graded to 3 Qualities, and charged according to grade. Then c1862 Griffith's Valuation when the Annual Ratable Valuation was set on Land and Buildings. Those two records record the Head of the Family (Occupier). Immediate Lessor, What the Property consisted of, House, Offices or outbuildings and Land shown in Acres, Roods and Poles/Perches, and Annual Valuation of Land, Buildings and the Total payable. Those Valuations were Updated each year and any change of occupier or Lessor noted and Dated in the right hand column. The Cancelled Valuation Pages can be searched on line from PRONI. Their ref is VAL/12/B. Using those pages one can follow the changes between c1864 to c1920. "Reps of Tom Blogs" indicates Tom has died and his Estate has not been finalised at the time the Agent called. Look for a Will for Tom around that year. Also available from PRONI as "Wills Callendars" searchable by name. Hope that helps you. Viola Sent from my iPad
