    1. FERMANAGH-GOLD Balfour & Madden Records at NLI & PRONI - Help wanted
    2. John Gardiner via
    3. Sorry I have left this so late before this request. I am going to be in Dublin at NLI all next week (Mon 23rd-Fri 27th Mar) doing a "Data Capture" exercise of Balfour Deeds, Leases, Rent Rolls & Estate Maps. I have already Pre Ordered and received back some of the stuff I want, but still have to photograph all the leases etc: There will be no time to read or study much. Time will be taken up carefully opening documents and preparation to photograph, so will be slow repetitive work. If anyone living in Dublin area is at a loose end next week, I would love to meet you and any help would be gratefully excepted. The following week (Mon 30th Mar - Thur 2nd Apr) I will be at PRONI in Belfast to do the same thing, with the same time consuming problems. PRONI have agreed to me Using a digital camera as I am collecting so much stuff. So if anyone can help.... The aim is to produce databases of Names, Townlands, Dates and any other info that may be useful. The images I am taking will not be released for copyright reasons, and will only be used for transcription/Data collection purposes by me. Again the preparation to Photograph will be the "time" problem so there will be no time for research "On site". When completed, I will be requesting the relevant "Permission to Publish" and putting the databases on FG & IGP. What's the point? Most Church records don't exist before 1800, but some of the documents I am collecting from go back to the early 1600's. The potential data can then be supplemented with Wills and Land Registry etc: This project will not be a quick one and will take me several months to produce anything useable, ask anyone who has attempted to read some of these old Documents. Just as a teaser, from the information I have already had back from NLI, I have been able to prove without doubt that My family were at the Townland I have traced links back too in 1729. I am hoping that among the leases I will be collecting there will be information going further back. Also from 2 of the leases I already have, I have established family links to 2 other areas of Fermanagh where the Surname is known to have settled. I doubt 20 helpers would be tolerated by NLI or PRONI, one per day would be good though. So if you're in the area and looking for an un-exiting several hours to open and close documents then I would be most grateful. I will be flying to Dublin tomorrow night, so I have a very small window for emails from anyone interested in giving me a hand. John Gardiner

    3. Unfortunately I can't get to Dublin any time soon and you seem to have things well organized! One thing is that at end of day you explain what you are doing and you'll be back next morning so they would probably be willing to keep them "on hold" and not put back on shelves that evening. Always found staff very helpful so once you say what you need to have at hand next morning then you'll save time! Regards Dave.
