Hi Carole, Thanks for this interesting post. I am related to literally hundreds of Sweeneys, (who are all called Sweeney), we all keep in touch and they would be horrified to be called Weeny! One wonders where they got some of these names from. I'll have to inform my Sweeney family groups that someone wants to call them Weeny. My own name , McHugh , has been anglicised from McAodh, pronounced McKay as in hay. I'd prefer the original. I notice, mainly on Irish TV show credits, the increasing number of Irish people who are reverting to the original Gaelic. I think it's a great thing.
