Thank you Linda, I am having the same problem with ancestors coming into Philadelphia in the 1840's and not having any further information about them or where they departed from. My ancestor's surname is Ginn. There are Ginns to the north and south of the US with perhaps a connection to the Ginns in Indiana, otherwise none. My family went to Ontario Canada and the census there have immigration dates but I don't know if that is for Canada or to the US. One gr-gr-grandmother was probably in her teens. When asked where in Ireland she was from, her answer was "If Ireland had been any good, I never would have left." In a later USA census she said she was born in Philadelphia.
