Not just place names change. A grandfather was registered on his birth certificate as Mathew (one T) registered at school as Matthew (2Ts) Martin. One of his sisters was born Faithie Catherine and died Catherine Faith. His wife was born Ruth Edith and died Edith Ruth. The English language changes too... 150 years ago some words with the 'sh' sound were spelt with a t or s, and some with ʃ.
