For autosomal DNA testing each company (FTDNA, Ancestry, 23andMe, etc.) tests different points on your genome. There is about 75% of the points tested that are in common across all three major companies. This results in a decrease in accuracy when comparing results from different companies. It can indicate a closer relationship than there actually is, and also increased false positive matches. For the best accuracy only compare the results from the same company, and test with more than one company. This is true but if you want to upgrade your data you would need to purchase a new kit because FTDNA won’t have your sample. I did this with my brother’s DNA because the company which he originally tested with went out of business. Margaret in Oz.
