Janet, In my family I found children living with aunts and uncles. In the 1902 census, my Acheson great aunts were living with their Nixon aunt and uncle. i.e.their Mom's brother's family. One of their cousins, Annabella, who was six and had lost her mother, was living in this Nixon home as well. Annabella was back living with her widower father in the 1911 census. I am sure the older girls, my great aunts, pulled their weight doing chores. The household had an 80 year old widow who likely needed help or support. Another household I saw had a 5 year old grandson visiting. His mother, a recent widow, had several other children. One of the widow's great grandsons is now a member of parliament in Canada with extra responsibilities. (I digress; I have had fun tracking these people) The widow joined sons in Canada. It was heartwarming to see how families were taking care of each other. It was a great feeling to know that when my great gran had fallen on difficult times, her brother took in her daughters. Just some ideas for you. Maybe you have looked and not found them.
