Thanks... was going to go there on Monday to photograph it, never been there but have passed it often!! DH FERMANAGH-GOLD Of Sligo interest Date: Sat, 26 Mar 2016 15:24:08 -0700 Someone mentioned forming a Sligo List a few days ago. I don’t have the reference but as I am just transcribing the Old Sligo Cemetery, they might want to include a reference to Captain Edward P. Doherty who although born in Canada of immigrant parents from Sligo, has a monument to his memory in Old Sligo, erected by his eldest sister Mary Anne Elizabeth Doherty. Captain Doherty (1838-1897) was a U.S. Civil War officer who led the detachment that captured and killed John Wilkes Booth. I thought it was interesting that his sister memorialized him in Old Sligo Cemetery as “the brave avenger of President Lincoln” in 1887, 10 years before his death in the U.S. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. So if you want to mention Doherty in the Sligo list, check out the IGP-Web for Old Sligo Cemetery (well, in a few days when I have finished transcribing and Chris has had a chance to post it.)
