    3. May I thank the people who responded to my posting of late January. Unfortunately, all suggested courses of action have already been followed, and nothing has been gained from them. As I stated, we live in Australia and have visited Ireland five times. We spent a lot of time in Roslea and Monaghan Town, with some stays up to 7 days. It's a long haul from here to Ireland, and we accept that our next visit may well be our last. Age and health must be taken into account. My wish was that someone from the Roslea/Clones/Monaghan Town area who was researching the McKenna family would reply to my posting. I am disappointed to reveal that such was not the case. Many headstones/gravestones in the cemetery beside the lovely St Tierney's Church prove that a strong McKenna connection still exists in the area. Your honour, I rest my case. Richard McKenna Tasmania Australia.

    3. Richard, Considering that the Lakeland Telephone Directory lists over 90 people named McKenna ranging from Newtownbutler to Kesh, a considerable distance. I did not count the entries for the bordering counties to Fermanagh in the section for the Irish Republic there are still a large population carrying the surname around. I don't remember your original post in January but I feel certain you cannot have given enough details of your family in Ireland. Names, dates, Townland, and Parish etc, are very important to any researcher. If the information supplied was what you already had, it would indicate that the places you had searched were not mentioned. That meant that the same ground was ploughed through by the person/persons trying to help you. Information about the family AFTER they left Ireland is not relevant to someone researching Irish records. Do you know the Townland they originated from? If so PRONI have on line the Updated Valuation pages giving the occupier changes between c 1862 to c1925. Before visiting Ireland it is very important to do your homework so that anyone helping you has a foundation to build on. Please do not be offended by any of the above as it applies to dozens of other researchers on this List. F-G is the best and most helpful list on Rootsweb. Members have transcribed more records and provided free of charge access to them through our website, and IGP website. Thank you to those transcribers. Viola

    3. Out of interest I counted some McKenna names with Monaghan telephone numbers and gave up at the Ps as I'd reached 300. Most of them in Emyvale, Clones and Scotstown areas. That would indicate research needed in those areas because families in Ireland did not move far from their roots, apart from emigration. Viola

    3. Dick and Ruth, You have received several replies regarding your McKennas. Presently I'm looking at family ties in the Scotstown area. Just what are the details that you have been working with please? 3. Hello RIchard, If you haven't already done so, I suggest that you check the online Baptismal records for St. Tierney's from Sean Rooney's wonderful website: http://www.rooneys-of-roslea.com/databases_records/St_tierneys_baptisms/m3.html As well as the records for Sacred Heart in Clones (half way down the page): http://www.rooneys-of-roslea.com/records_index.html John in NC On 2016/03/23 09:01 , Dick & Ruth McKenna via wrote: > May I thank the people who responded to my posting of late January. > > Unfortunately, all suggested courses of action have already been followed, > and nothing has been gained from them. > > As I stated, we live in Australia and have visited Ireland five times. 3. Hello Richard, I too am in Australia but have not had the good fortune to travel to Fermanagh. I too wish that someone from the Curraghmore / Pettigo area where my ancestors lived would be on the list. In 15 years that hasn't happened, but I have stayed on the list, and learned lots of things I would not have had the opportunity to do so if I had dropped out. I have tried to help people with their family searches where I can, particularly if they have family who came to Australia. I work full time but I do transcribing of gravestones in my spare time which I enjoy. I have not been lucky enough to find one of my own among the gravestons, but it adds to the data base so that others who come after me may find where their families are buried. And who knows, one day a person from my family line may join and it will all have been worthwhile. If I leave, they can't find me. In the meantime , it's fun to watch others find their families and break down their own brick walls. And of course, watch Vi on the TV!
