    3. PS - John Cowan was "my" Robert Cowan's father. - Jane From: [email protected] To: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: RE: FERMANAGH-GOLD COWAN, FLETCHER, QUINN and PHIBBS near Castle Archdale Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2016 08:53:42 -0400 I think there may be 2 Robert Cowans in Glenkeen (or that area). I have Robert Cowan married to Mary Jane Elliott of Ferney, Magheracross on March 13, 1868 in Enniskillen. Mary Jane's father was Edward Elliott. This Robert was born about 1835 and died about 1901. The Robert that Pia is tracing was baptized about 1834 and died in 1901 but married to Margaret Jane Love. It looks like the same Robert except for who they married. I have a copy of the marriage of Robert & Mary Jane from rootsireland.ie. On Family Search, I see Robert & Margaret have a daughter born October 24, 1877 and a son born December 10, 1878. These dates don't match up with dates I have for Robert & Mary Jane's children. So it looks like there are 2 Roberts - what do you think? - Jane > To: [email protected]; [email protected] > Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2016 10:45:24 +1100 > Subject: Re: FERMANAGH-GOLD COWAN, FLETCHER, QUINN and PHIBBS near Castle Archdale > From: [email protected] > > Doug, > > > > This is an interesting one. Took me a while to figure out that the record in the 1901 census has been transcribed wrong : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Milltown/Glenkeen/1355561/ > > > > This Robert Cowan was baptised 1834 not 1814. I did send nationalarchives a message but they don't seem to have fixed the record. > > > > But it shows that it is always worth checking the actual image to check the transcription. > > > > As far as I have been able to figure out (and from family lore), this was Robert's first marriage - he married at 42 and he was the oldest son of the family. He married Margaret Jane "Maggie" Love who was born 1854. Robert's last child George was born in 1900 when Robert was 66. George was only 1 when his father passed away. George's descendants still live on the same land. George was the youngest child of 9. He inherited the land as his older brothers died young, many of tuberculosis. He had 5 older brothers. > > > > The history of the naming of the Clonkeen/Glenkeen townland is interesting. In the mid 1700's, the townland was known as Clonkeen. It has changed from Clonkeen to Glenkeen and back again and is currently known as Glenkeen. > > > > The Cowan family was given a grand lease for the Clonkeen townland from the Archdales on 4 July 1749 for three lives. I have a description of the deed from one of 'the lives' living in Sydney from a letter dated 27/9/1868 to his brother living at Clonkeen, which describes it as "on payment of £5.0.0 spoken of for each life therefore if it were necessary to put two lives in it would be only 10£ instead of your strange information from Mr Collum or any other Gentleman attorney the Deed is dated 4 July 1749 in it there is a condition which to all appearances would compel me to give notice six months after the Death of any life to the Heirs of the property (on the payment of £5.0.0 only) to put in whoever I would nominate if this condition has not been changed by an Act of Parliament (which I believe it must have) Clonkeen will soon be out of the name and indeed I would say justly through the neglect of our Uncle D. Cowan who I fear never did get the lives renew'd and I fear never gave any notice to General Archdale - at the Death of Mr Lendrum who is the last life do not you forget as my representative to give notice in writing to the Heir Mr Archdale before 6 months expire and Three £5.0.0 notes say £15.0.0 stating the name of 3 lives and I am persuaded He will grant you Archdale 1st get him to put it on paper his offer Then ask such a man as Mr Irvine of Irvinestown would he make an offer on paper or any other person who you know has money to lay out in such a place". > > > > Pia. > > > > From: Doug Fletcher [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Sunday, 27 March 2016 4:20 AM > To: [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: Re: FERMANAGH-GOLD COWAN, FLETCHER, QUINN and PHIBBS near Castle Archdale > > > > Thank you Pia, > > William Henry Fletcher’s older brother John was my great grandfather. > > I am exploring wills because executors and administrators can sometimes suggest family connections. > > The 1901 census for Robert Cowan at Glenkeen shows he was 87 therefore bn abt 1814. In 1901, executor William Henry Fletcher was 54 and Quinn was 40, so a generation younger (at least). > > interestingly, William Henry Fletcher’s father William Fletcher was also still alive in 1901, age 89 so born abt 1812. Or else Robert Cowan got married very very late in life!!! In 1901 he has a one year old at 87. What a guy. > > Do you happen to know if he had a first marriage and who his wife might have been? > > Also, when I looked at the Derryvullen burials, I see two Cowan burials where the location is recorded/transcribed as "Clonkeen??” > > Might this in fact be a mis-transcription of Glenkeen townland?
