    3. Well it's been said over and over and over again RELIGION is the key but people still totally ignore it in their posts!!!! People won't read the advice given in posts!! How is one to advise anyone as to best possible location/church/graveyard when people just can't be bothered including the RELIGION of whoever they're looking for????? RELIGION is key for finding certain records in Ireland! 3. As Dave mentioned Civil Parishes and Religious Parishes can be totally different in both name and area covered. It is important to understand this difference. Official records will use Civil Parishes (Census, Griffith Valuation etc), but church records will use the Religious Parish. This is why religion is key for finding certain records in Fermanagh! The original Civil Parishes are a snapshot in time and capture the Parishes as used by the Established Church (Church of Ireland). Both the Church of Rome and Church of Ireland still have this idea of Parishes today, but they will differ greatly as "Chapels of Ease" established new Parishes, which change over time, splitting and combining as the "flock" grew and shrank in certain areas. Tomregan Civil Parish extends into County Fermanagh and this portion only consists of 14 townlands which are Aghindisert, Carickaleese, Cloncoohy, Derrintony, Derryart, Garvary, Gortahurk, Gortaree, Gortineddan, Gortmullan, Knockadoois, Knockateggal, Tonymore and Ummera Thanks to NUI Galway, the OpenStreetMap have been able to work with some nice parish maps. This link should be zoomed in over Tomregan - http://maps.openstreetmap.ie/civilparish_barony.html?zoom=14&lat=54.14701&lon=-7.57151&layers=BFFFFFFFTFFFFFFFFFFFTT It is also worth noting that some Civil Parishes not only straddle County boundaries, they also, in some cases, split townlands! Examples are Larganacarran (part is in Killesher CP and part is in Kinawley CP) and Cavanagarvan (part in Aghavea CP and part in Aghalurcher CP). These townlands caused me much confusion for a very long time! Clive On Friday 06 March 2015 20:45:55 Dave H via wrote: > Again with that you have Tomregan > > BUT > > Ballyconnell Church in Co. 2. Ref: Transcriber errors between 1901 and 1911 census - wee correction my friend Viola .... "One very obvious being Tattinalee Tattenfree [the same townland] Viola" This is wrong, they are in fact two totally separate although adjoining townlands, not the same townland. I should know, I grew up there! Both part of Colebrooke Estate originally. In speech Tattinfree in my lifetime and my parents was always pronounced Tattinafree but spelled with no middle "a" on maps. Tattinalee was on the far side of the bog and accessed from a completely different road. You're rarely wrong Viola, but this was my turf, literally! Linda Swindle
