Dave The Personal Files (PF) held by MI5 and other “secret services” (e.g. SOE) on people, whether members, or targets are closed for 100 years. Originally, MI5 used to destroy the defunct files on people who were subject to an investigation for one reason or another, but at some point there was a change in policy and they are now handed over to the The National Archives in London once they are no longer wanted by the service which created them. Even if they’re still closed, the files are catalogued (MI5 PFs have the KV 2 class number) and if proof of death is provided, TNA will open the file. (The SOE List has provided numerous proofs of death and had many SOE PFs (class HS 9) opened in the past couple of years. I don’t know in which TNA class number the Easter Rising files to which you refer are held. Lewis could be a surname. So there is perhaps a Lewis on the maternal side of the family. Or as other people suggested a respected friend. Who were the Godparents/Sponsors at baptism? Have you the full name or is there a second given name? That might give you a clue. Viola >> >> My ancestor named his first born son, Lewis, born in 1826 in Ontario. I only have what I reported, nothing further. Wish I could find the mother's family, but that may not happen! Thanks for your suggestions. bj
Could he have been named after a neighbour/friend/someone who was very helpful to the family after they came to Canada? > On May 31, 2015, at 11:10 AM, Betty Jean moyle via <fermanagh-gold@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > My ancestor named his first born son, Lewis, born in 1826 in Ontario. My ancestor named his first born son, Lewis, born in 1826 in Ontario. The family came here from Fermanagh in 1817. Hi Betty Jean The Fallis family in Ontario was associated with a Lipsett family, also from Fermanagh. The Lipsetts had quite a few Lewis Lipsetts in Ontario and in the earlier Fermanagh generations. Dave, I have heard about this and the feedback from the maintenance crews responsible for certain graveyards has not been good! OK, have only tried this twice and it is something that I haven't seen mentioned.. With a 100% positive result so far! On these two occasions I have left notes at graves in waterproof container .. "Can anyone related to people buried in this plot please contact (email address) " No waffle, no detail! I left a note (as above) on a grave only 8 days ago for someone researching their family here in Ireland and have just received an email that contact has been made between the two parties!! This researcher has been very actively researching for years..... Not a bad result!! DH --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com
